Robot fried chicken: entrepreneur seeks to improve S. Korea’s favorite food
In fried-chicken-obsessed South Korea, restaurants serving the nation's favorite fast-food dish dot every street corner. But Kang Ji-young's establishment brings something a little different to the table: a robot is cooking the chicken. Eaten at everything from tiny family gatherings to a 10-million-viewer live-streamed "mukbang" -- eating broadcast -- by K-pop star Jungkook of BTS fame, fried chicken is deeply embedded in South Korean culture. Paired with cold lager and known as "chimaek" -- a portmanteau of the Korean words for chicken and beer -- it is a staple of Seoul's famed baseball-watching experience. The domestic market -- the world's third largest, after the United States and China -- is worth about seven trillion won ($5.3 billion), but labor shortages are starting to bite as South Korea faces a looming demographic disaster due to having the world's lowest birth rate. Around 54 percent of business owners in the food service sector report problems finding employees, a government survey last year found, with long hours and stressful conditions the likely culprit, according to industry research. Korean fried chicken is brined and double-fried, which gives it its signature crispy exterior, but the process -- more elaborate than what is typically used by US fast food chains -- creates additional labor and requires extended worker proximity to hot oil. Enter Kang, a 38-year-old entrepreneur who saw an opportunity to improve the South Korean fried chicken business model -- and the dish itself. "The market is huge," Kang told AFP at her Robert Chicken franchise. Chicken and pork cutlets are the most popular delivery orders in South Korea, and the industry could clearly benefit from more automation to "effectively address labor costs and workforce shortages", she said. Kang's robot, composed of a simple, flexible mechanical arm, is capable of frying 100 chickens in two hours -- a task that would require around five people and several deep fryers. But not only does the robot make chicken more efficiently -- it makes it more delicious, says Kang. "We can now say with confidence that our robot fries better than human beings do," she said. Investing in 'foodtech' Already a global cultural powerhouse and major semiconductor exporter, South Korea last year announced plans to plough millions of dollars into a "foodtech" fund to help startups working on high-tech food industry solutions. Seoul says such innovations could become a "new growth engine", arguing there is huge potential if the country's prowess in advanced robotics and AI technology could be combined with the competitiveness of Korean food classics like kimchi. South Korea's existing foodtech industry -- including everything from next-day grocery delivery app Market Kurly to AI smart kitchens to a "vegan egg" startup -- is already worth millions, said food science professor Lee Ki-won at Seoul National University. Even South Korea's Samsung Electronics -- one of the world's biggest tech companies -- is trying to get in on the action, recently launching Samsung Food, an AI-personalized recipe and meal-planning platform, available in eight languages. Lee predicted South Korea's other major conglomerates are likely to follow Samsung into foodtech. "Delivering food using electric vehicles or having robots directly provide deliveries within apartment complexes, known as 'metamobility', could become a part of our daily lives," he said. "I am confident that within the next 10 years, the food tech industry will transform into the leading sector in South Korea." 'Initially struggled' Entrepreneur Kang now has 15 robot-made chicken restaurants in South Korea, and one branch in Singapore. During AFP's visit to a Seoul branch, a robot meticulously handled the frying process -- from immersing chicken in oil, flipping it for even cooking, to retrieving it at the perfect level of crispiness, as the irresistible scent of crunchy chicken wafted through the shop. Many customers remained oblivious to the hard-working robotic cook behind their meal. Kim Moon-jung, a 54-year-old insurance worker, said she was not sure how a robot would make the chicken differently from a human "but one thing is certain -- it tastes delicious". The robot can monitor oil temperature and oxidation levels in real time while it fries chicken, ensuring consistent taste and superior hygiene. When Kang first started her business she "initially struggled" to see why anyone would use robots rather than human chefs. But "after developing these technologies, I've come to realize that from a customer's perspective, they're able to enjoy food that is not only cleaner but also tastier", she told AFP. Her next venture is a tip-free bar in Koreatown in New York City, where the cocktails will feature Korea's soju rice wine -- and will be made by robots. Oh, Napoli!
NAPLES, Italy — This is a city you won’t expect to be in Europe... especially in Italy. Many tourists shy away from this gritty area of the country situated on the Gulf of Naples simply because it does not boast of Rome’s romantic allure. Instead, wandering around Naples — especially in the Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarters) — would make you wonder if you’re really in Europe or in some not-so-picturesque section of Manila or Jakarta. [caption id="attachment_178845" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Naples’ Quartieri Spagnoli or Spanish Quarters.[/caption] A colleague who went ahead of me for a few weeks didn’t enjoy the visit so much. “Tondo vibes,” she warned me, laughing, referring to that depressed and dirty part of Manila. Still, it didn’t deter me from going, knowing that there are treasures hidden somewhere and my gut telling me Naples is simply misunderstood. Besides, I used the city as my base for exploring Pompeii, which is just a short train ride away. Well, she was right about saying that Naples is, you know, not your usual Italian city oozing with pomp and pageantry. To feel the pulse of the city, I stayed at the Spanish Quarters, an 800,000-square meter-neighborhood that had a reputation for being a bad area to find yourself in regardless of the time of day. Having grown up in Manila and going to places even hardcore individuals try to avoid, what I saw here didn’t compare to the squalor back in my homeland. It looked like Forbes Park compared to what I have seen in the Philippines and Indonesia. So, I stayed up a bit late, drank quite a number of tasty Italian beers and walked around the “bad neighborhood.” In the morning and in the evening, I took a walk and dined and shopped. There were no troublemakers to be concerned about and my daily strolls took me to the city’s jaw-dropping sites and majestic churches. For three days, Naples brought a smile to my face. Tondo vibes? Nah. While the Eternal City is head and shoulders above in terms of well-known attractions and must-see spots, it does not mean travelers have all the reason not to experience what it has to offer. Finest pizzas Oftentimes tagged as the jump-off point to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, a mere 24 kilometers by rail, Naples is a haven for food lovers. It was here that pizza was invented while being watched over by the once-violent Mount Vesuvius in the backdrop. But don’t get me wrong. If you think that you have tasted the finest pizza in the world by sampling the bestsellers being peddled by premium fast-food outlets, then you should be more than willing to try the original pizza that is being sold here. [caption id="attachment_178847" align="aligncenter" width="1536"] Pizza Margherita cooked the old-fashioned way.[/caption] It’s not the usual thin and crispy crust you often wolf down whenever somebody’s celebrating his or her birthday at the office. It’s more than that. [caption id="attachment_178846" align="aligncenter" width="1536"] Napoli staples. Pizza Napoletana, a cold brew and your favorite cola.[/caption] The pizza being baked here — known as Pizza Napoletana — is of a different kind and usually has two flavors: Margherita and Marinara. And they’re almost identical. Margherita has pomodoro, fior di latte, olio, basilico (tomato, fior di latte cheese, oil and basil) and Marinara has pomodoro, origano, aglio, olio (tomato, oregano, garlic, oil). After devouring one huge serving of the €5 Margherita at the renowned L’ Antica Pizzeria da Michele, where Julia Roberts dined and shot Eat, Pray, Love, I took a walk once again and ran into the Bulso di Pulcinella (Bust of Pulcinella). [caption id="attachment_178843" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Julia Roberts took a bite of the renowned Pizza Napoletana during the filming of ‘Eat, Pray, Love.’[/caption] According to legend, one has to rub the statue’s nose for good luck and that’s exactly what I did. [caption id="attachment_178848" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Rub his nose for good luck. | PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF AUDREY GIONGCO[/caption] Medieval structures If you love old — and ancient churches —there’s a lot within this lovely area. At almost every corner, there’s a medieval church that is very Instagrammable. But what stood out was the one I visited one balmy morning when residents were either still soundly asleep or just about getting ready to start another day. The Chiesa del Gesu Nuovo (New Jesus) completed in the late-1700s, is undoubtedly the city’s most beautiful church despite its sober facade. [caption id="attachment_178849" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] The main altar of Gesu Nuovo, said to be Naples’ most beautiful church.[/caption] Aside from the Gesu Nuovo, worth visiting as well are the Naples Cathedral (Cattidrale di San Gennaro), Basilica di Santa Chiara and the Girolamini. Definitely, by the time you are done, you will be famished. Head to the nearest pizzeria and get the Margherita and pair it with a small bottle of cola zero zuccheri or the ubiquitous Nastro Azzurro in the green bottle. Salute! Would I make a return trip? You bet! The post Oh, Napoli! appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Chikungunya invades Mountain Province
BAGUIO CITY — The provincial government in Mountain Province has warned the public on the alarming rise of Chikungunya in the province as the Provincial Health Office logged 672 cases of the dengue-like viral infection from January to August 2023. Chikungunya is transmitted to humans through a bite of an infected mosquito that can cause excruciating joint pain and swelling. The disease, however, is different from dengue yet they are both caused by mosquito bites. Fever as a result of chikungunya typically lasts three to four days, while dengue fever can last anywhere from two to seven days or even more. In Chikungunya, rashes all across the face, palms, feet, limbs can be found while rashes are limited to limbs and face for those who are infected with dengue. Based on the data from the PHO, the Municipality of Paracelis tops the list with 658 cases which were detected in the barangays of Bantay, Banana and Butigue while 14 cases were listed in the neighboring town of Natonin. Take a sip of what this chill ‘hidden’ bar offers
We all know that nightlife in the city often consists of loud and cramped bars with limited tables, little to no seats, overly loud music, blaring lights, overpriced drinks and exhaustion at the end of the night. But who said nightlife always has to be so chaotic? [gallery size="full" ids="172073,172072,172070"] Poblacion, Makati has recently become one the many popular party spots in the Metro. With many bars and clubs alongside each other, people flock to the area as it offers many options where they can go clubbing with friends. Yet for those looking to have a good time without the extreme noise and chaos, a rooftop bar hidden in an alley along the rows of clubs in the streets of Poblacion awaits. [caption id="attachment_172069" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Banter And Jive bar.[/caption] Banter and Jive is a safe haven amidst the bustle of Poblacion. With its cozy ambience, friendly staff and delicious drinks, Banter and Jive provides a much-needed escape from the typical chaotic nightlife in the city. Unlike crowded bars where loud music and patrons drown out any possibility of conversation, this intimate setting provides the perfect environment for those wanting a night out while still being able to sit down and talk — the owners Michael and Panjee’s main goal and inspiration in creating Banter and Jive in the first place. [caption id="attachment_172076" align="aligncenter" width="481"] Panjee and Michael Singleton with their dogs Cooper and Luna.[/caption] Coming from the corporate world, the people they meet, the stories they hear, conversations they make and connections they build are ultimately what fuel the couple’s love for partying. They wanted to create a space that reflects that. The result is a cozy bar with a cool vibe — much like Panjee and Mike themselves — from the laid-back atmosphere, down to the smallest detail such as the wildlife-inspired wallpaper that, for some reason, if you look hard enough, includes pugs that embodies their love for dogs. With the space only being able to comfortably fit 30 people (although at some point, we are told, it catered to 50), everyone can undoubtedly get the chance to meet new friends as they wander around. They can also lounge on the second floor for more comfortable seating as it consists of bean bags and can fit up to seven people. With the assistance of the bartenders, they also get the opportunity to enjoy themselves by making their own drinks. Banter and Jive serves a wide range of cocktails with a unique twist. Whether bitter, sweet, hard, or mild; it has one for every taste. If your taste runs on the classics, you can get a gin and tonic, vodka tonic or highballs. Signature drinks include the Bumble Bramble, “a twist on the Bramble,” and Pink Venom, Mango Nero, Cigar and Cinnamon. Going through the drinks menu alone is an adventure in itself. Make sure you have had a bite to eat before you come as the menu only offers drinks. Popcorn on the house, of course. Banter And Jive definitely revolutionizes the concept of nightlife by providing an oasis where clubbing enthusiasts can still engage in meaningful conversations. Its commitment to fostering genuine connections and camaraderie sets it apart from traditional nightclubs that focuses solely on loud music and dancing. So if you’re tired of mindless nights out or crave something more intellectually stimulating while still enjoying great liquor — head over to Banter And Jive; you won’t be disappointed! Bug venom
Bug bites may be superficial and heal in no time. There are, however, dangerous insect attacks like what happened at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The jail is under investigation over the controversial death of one inmate that was linked to bugs. The prison is notorious for being filthy and for rampant violence resulting in deaths and injuries to inmates. Its wardens are being prosecuted for using excessive force on prisoners, CBS News reported. An autopsy report on the death of 35-year-old Lashawn Thompson was disturbing. Thompson suffered insect bites on his ears, mouth, nose, and all over his body, CBS News reported, quoting Ben Crump and Michael Harper, attorneys for Thompson’s family. He was “eaten alive” by bed bugs, the autopsy report said, and died three months after he was booked into the jail, according to CBS News. Meanwhile, a Texas man suffered from a rare insect infection. Michael Kohlhof, 35, was admitted to a hospital with what he thought was the flu, USA Today reported. His condition turned worse and a diagnosis of sepsis prompted his transfer to the intensive care unit. Kohlhof needed a ventilator to breathe, take antibiotics, and undergo dialysis. Doctors later told his family that he had contracted typhus caused by a flea bite. The disease caused tissue death in Kohlhof’s hands and feet, leading to the amputation of both his hands up to his forearms. The post Bug venom appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Dirty brew
Harmony with the communities where San Miguel Corp. — which gained fame for its renowned beer — has put up its energy plants is not what the company is projecting, as most plants have been the subject of massive complaints from residents. According to a survey by think-tank Center for Energy, Ecology and Development, most of the complaints are related to the effects on the environment of the projects. For instance, in 2017, communities and civil society organizations launched the Break Free 2017 campaign to oppose the expansion of fossil fuel industries at the project site of SMC’s Limay Coal Power Plant. Residents of Limay, Bataan complained of being exposed to the emissions of the then 300-megawatt, or MW, coal plant and the 140-MW plant of the Petron Bataan Fuel Refinery. The groups’ claim that the plant’s testing operations may have resulted in ash spills was found to be accurate by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, which issued a Cease and Desist Order. Before SMC acquired the Masinloc power plant in 2018, the plant was already subjected to opposition, which led to delays in its operation during the 1990s. Environmentalists, farmers, and fishermen at the time staged protests, claiming that contaminated water from the plant would reduce the fish catch. The Masinloc power plant was then owned and operated by state firm National Power Corp. and was billed as the solution to the long brownouts that Luzon suffered daily. Using his emergency powers, then-President Fidel Ramos endorsed the quick construction of the project, displacing over 1,000 individuals in the process. It was then discovered that the plant produced over 385,000 tons of ash yearly, putting local communities’ health at risk. The previous owners of the Masinloc power plant claimed to have spent over $1 billion for its realignment to make it more environmentally friendly. SMC considered the power asset as allowing them to increase their footprint in clean coal technology. There were then also complaints from residents whom CEED said were directly impacted by some of SMCGP’s coal power plants. The residents alleged harassment and intimidation by various individuals for them to give up their properties. In 2016, SMCGP proposed to construct and operate its Limay Power Station in Limay, Bataan. A portion of the power plant site was thereafter fenced off by private individuals who claimed to have sold the property, and people were prohibited from entering or accessing the crops they had planted in the area. The situation was the same in Sariaya, Quezon in 2018, after SMCGP proposed the construction of a circulating fluidized bed coal-fired power plant in the municipality. In Mariveles, Bataan, where SMC’s Mariveles coal-fired power plant units 1 to 4 will rise, residents found themselves ousted from the property they were living on, through rights, at the peak of the Covid-19 lockdowns by alleged landowners claiming the property had been sold. SMC’s mining business is also facing its fair share of opposition. Its Daguma Agro Minerals Inc., or DAMI, was granted a coal development and production operating contract in South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat by the Department of Energy back in 2002. The contract included the 17,000 hectares of collective land that the SMC mining companies planned to explore. San Miguel Energy Corp. acquired full ownership of DAMI, which was owned by a group headed by businessman Ben Guingona. DAMI has coal mines in South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat, in areas known for being rich in mineral deposits. DAMI’s projects in South Cotabato were opposed by environmental advocates, the local Catholic diocese, and the host communities, due to environmental and encroachment concerns. DAMI uses the strip mining method, a form of open-pit mining that is forbidden by South Cotabato’s 2010 environment code. The provincial board of South Cotabato rejected a resolution that would have endorsed DAMI’s mining operations since it violated South Cotabato’s ban on open-pit mining. The provincial board, however, moved to amend the code and lift the ban. Local officials are now under fire as they kept residents unaware of SMC’s tree-clearing operations. South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr., in response, vetoed the lifting of the ban on open-pit mining. The classic sound bite of the company of leaving no one behind is hard to discern from the way SMC treats communities it considers as getting in the way of its massive projects. Teodoro: No specific discussions on add’l EDCA facilities between Phl, US
There are no discussions between the Philippines and the United States on identifying more Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement Defense facilities in the country, Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. said Thursday. “There was not [a] discussion. No specific discussion and there are no, there is nothing on my table to increase the number of these… EDCA facilities in on the Philippine bases,” Teodoro told the reporters at a press conference at the Department of National Defense headquarters at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City. He said the government will have to study the capability of the country before considering the expansion of the EDCA facilities. “We have to, you can’t bite more than what you can chew. That’s what I’m trying to state earlier, we gotta make things work first before expanding,” Teodoro said. “A lot of conglomerates have fallen because of too quick an expansion without being able to absorb the capability to sustain.” There are five existing EDCA sites in the country including the Bautista Air Base in Palawan; Basa Air Base in Pampanga; Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija; Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City; and the Benito Ebuen Air Base in Mactan, Cebu. In April, the government identified additional four new EDCA sites namely Camilo Osias Naval Base in Sta. Ana town and Lal-lo Airport in Lal-lo town, both in Cagayan; Camp Melchor dela Cruz in Gamu, Isabela and Balabac, the southernmost island in Palawan. ADB cuts inflation forecast for developing Asia
The Asian Development Bank cut its inflation forecast for developing Asia on Wednesday, as food and fuel prices eased, supply chain disruptions waned and interest rate hikes started to bite. Inflation, which has squeezed household budgets and left millions of poor households struggling to put food on the table, is heading back towards pre-Covid levels, the Philippines-based lender said. It expects inflation of 3.6 percent this year, compared with its forecast in April of 4.2 percent as prices in China ease sharply, the bank said in its flagship outlook report. Developing Asia refers to the multilateral lender's 46 emerging member economies, stretching from Kazakhstan in Central Asia to the Cook Islands in the Pacific. The ADB kept its economic growth forecast of 4.8 percent for 2023, citing robust consumption, travel, and investment, even as global demand for the regions' exports weakened. Further upside to its forecast was possible, the bank said. "If inflation is tamed more quickly than currently expected in the advanced economies, the authorities there would likely adopt a more dovish monetary policy, which would support growth in the region," ADB said. At the same time, the lender warned an escalation in Russia's invasion of Ukraine could fuel price hikes, while the return of the El Nino weather phenomenon this year could hurt economies. The tide was also turning on interest rates, the bank noted. "With lower inflation in developing Asia and more moderate monetary tightening in the United States, most central banks in the region have kept policy rates steady this year, with signs emerging of a shift toward easier money," it said. China, the world's second-largest economy, is still expected to grow at five percent this year and 4.5 percent in 2024, the bank said, citing supportive monetary and fiscal policies. Board and bite
Huge waves are the least of surfers’ worries in their fave water sport. For a young surfer from DeLand, Florida, USA, a foot injury he suffered at New Smyrna Beach on 14 July did not result from riding the waves. Emergency responders took the man in his 20s to the hospital after a shark bit him, the Volusia County Beach Safety said, according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal. Fortunately for the guy, it was not a life-threatening injury. Off the coast of Santa Cruz, California, another sea animal has become a threat to surfers and kayakers. “This (animal) has been aggressively approaching people and biting surfboards,” the US Fish and Wildlife Service said in a statement, Kron4.com reported. A video of one surfer’s encounter with 841, the name given to the animal, has gone viral. It shows 841 emerging from the water and climbing on the man’s surfboard. It began biting and scratching the board. The surfer tried to shoo it away but it refused to leave. It then tried to bite the surfer, forcing him to abandon his board and swim to shore. A photographer caught the “hijacker” on the surfboard with his camera and the photo also went viral on social media. Reports say the same creature harassed other surfers and tried to commandeer their boards. A warning sign has been posted by the USFWS telling beachgoers that they could enter the water at their own risk and to keep away from marine wildlife. The phone number of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is also on the sign for beachgoers to report encounters with or sightings of 841. Since 2 July, the USFWS also has been trying to capture the aggressive female otter targeting surfers before it could inflict more harm. Once caught, the agency plans to rehome it in captivity. Recto Bank tactics
After years of being ordered by a pro-China leader to bite their tongues, Filipino security officials are now vocal and blunt about China’s devilish schemes in the West Philippine Sea or WPS. For their refreshing candor, our Coast Guard and military officials deserve our unequivocal cheers. Significant too is the fact that they’ve taken to heart one of China’s tactics of camouflaging armed Chinese maritime militia vessels as “innocent fishing boats” when our officials raised alarms last week that some 50 Chinese militia vessels were presently “swarming” Iroquois Reef, which is part of the crucial Recto Bank. “Swarming” is a threadbare Chinese scheme that’s often a prelude to China occupying South China Sea’s contested maritime features like reefs and banks. “Swarming” eventually proceeds to China constructing outright militarized artificial islands. As it is, the tactic begins with “swarming the area for a very long period. If you fail to notice them, they will increase their number eventually until they occupy the area,” says Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela. Our military and Coast Guard officials vow the necessary measures against the intruders in natural gas-rich Recto Bank (Reed Bank as it is internationally known), which is well within the Philippines’ 370-kilometer (200-nautical miles) exclusive economic zone. The Permanent Court of Arbitration or PCA ruled in 2016 that Recto Bank was within the Philippine EEZ, granting the country economic rights over the area. China refuses to recognize the ruling and claims the area as being within its territory, courtesy of a fictitious nine-dash line that’s attempting to turn a vast sea into a lake. Geographically, Iroquois Reef — locally called Del Pilar Reef — is part of the expansive Recto Bank, shorthand for a cluster of underwater banks and shoals located in an area of the shallow sea between Palawan and the Spratly Islands. Ignoring what is happening at Recto Bank is to our peril, harming not only our political interests but more importantly, our economic interests. Politically, the late President Noynoy Aquino unforgettably quipped, “Setting foot on Recto Bank is no different from setting foot on Recto Avenue.” Economically, since 1968, the Philippines, China, Taiwan and Vietnam have laid claim to Recto Bank in the hope of striking it rich by finding oil. Despite such enrichment prospects, no regional government has struck black gold anywhere in the South China Sea, however. But, says maritime expert Gregory B. Polling, “Unlike in 1968, now all the claimants know that there is no commercially viable oil and gas around the islands themselves. The exploitable basins are along the coasts and in a handful of underwater features like Reed Bank and Vanguard Bank.” Natural gas, therefore, is by far the more plentiful resource at Recto Bank. But in exploiting the natural gas, as Polling points out, “the only commercially viable way to extract it is to transport it by pipeline for use or processing on shore.” Pretty much how our Malampaya gas fields, predicted to run out in a few years, operate. Still, even if it wrests Recto Ban from us crafty China will find its adventure costly. China will need to lay an undersea pipeline across nearly 1,000 miles of difficult geography and contested waters to access the gas. “On-site liquefaction is the only other option,” says Polling. “But even if a company wanted to try, it is hard to see how it could compete with the liquefied natural gas produced more cheaply elsewhere.” So the only viable use for the natural gas at Recto Bank is for electricity generation by the nearest coastal state, which happens to be our country. “The gas from Reed Bank is no good to anyone outside the Philippines,” says Polling. So if the aggressive tactics of both the Chinese paramilitaries and Coast Guard aren’t readily explained by economics, China’s political and strategic concerns explain everything. It is in this political context that our Coast Guard’s proactive maneuver of consistently and publicly illuminating China’s aggressive tactics in the WPS works. China can’t long endure international embarrassment and condemnation. The post Recto Bank tactics appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Solving China, Russia
Dear Editor Seeing the problem for what it truly is means half solving it. Both Russia and China have stubborn false views/beliefs and false historical narratives, coupled with avarice, in coveting what is not theirs. That’s the bottom line. Both nations need to see this. And that is the solution to the crises they have created, the peaceful way. Russia has harbored resentment against independent Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and hallucinates that Ukraine is still part of “Mother Russia,” as opposed to the historic Act signed by Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Ukraine’s first president Leonid Kravchuk on 8 December 1991, recognizing Ukraine as an independent country. It was overwhelmingly approved by the people (90 percent) of Ukraine in a referendum even before the formal accord declaring their independence. China, for its part, in claiming almost all (90 percent) of the West Philippine Sea or South China Sea has only its own fabled “nine-dash line” to back up and defend its robbery or its continuing illegal occupation of the disputed sea. Studies and research by international experts and history professors disprove the “line.” Can we imagine if all nations created their own story and map artwork of the “nine-dash line” to invade neighboring territories? The situation in the West Philippine Sea between the Philippines and China is no different from the ongoing senseless, savage Russia-Ukraine war which Russia started and continues to inflame. It is a war better called the “Russia War.” May sanity prevail and humanity in humans triumph. Stop the bloodshed. China’s bullying is not limited to its bullying of our fishermen. It is depictive of its impudence and defiance of international law, more so its disrespect and contempt for our ethos and dignity as a people and nation. Imperious. BBM would do well to take every “goodwill” gesture of China to the Philippines with a grain of salt, if not view it as an act of ill will. Any help, aid, or “trade cooperation” China has offered and may offer in the future is and would be meaningless, and could be construed as fraught with bad intentions — unless they repent. China used to be a good friend to the Philippines, but not anymore. Dear officials of the land, beware of the present Chinese officials playing (subtle) the “forbidden fruit” game. Don’t bite the bug or the bait. Succumb not. What they are doing in the West Philippine Sea is unprecedented and indefensible. Open your eyes. Be very careful in dealing with them until they behave and cease their aggressions and juvenile sweeping claims to the contested body of water. Go ahead, dear senators, with your proposal to bring the WPS row to the United Nations for another just, intelligent decision/resolution of the brewing time bomb (for the world) on account of the incessant robber of foreign territories. It is a wise move. There are only two “ifs” — two crucial “ifs” — for China and the world to ponder upon. One is, if China won’t still budge and recognize another international ruling, this time by the United Nations no less, then all nations, not only the Philippines, should brace themselves for the undesirable. The other “if” is: If the Chinese leaders can’t and will not really accept the 2016 ruling of the arbitral tribunal rejecting its “nine-dash line” myth, before the action/decision of the United Nations, the only remaining wise thing left for them to do is to accept reason and justness. By doing so, they may engage our country and the rest of the claimant countries involved in the WPS row in a dialogue (serious, transparent, and sincere) to reach a compromise “win-win solution” for all — for the sake of peace and the saving of lives, and the preservation of our planet. Play fair and humane. That is even wiser. “God will judge the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness.” — Psalm 9:8 (NLT) The post Solving China, Russia appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Dengue health reminders
The dengue virus, also known as DENV, is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Due to the frequent rainy seasons, the virus is commonly present in tropical and subtropical countries like ours. To protect our communities from dengue, Watsons wants to raise the alarm on the severity of this infection and educate the public on the preventive measures against it. The Philippines has an average of 185,008 cases of dengue over a five-year period of 2012 to 2016, and an average death count of 732. As of 25 April, a total of 39,947 dengue cases were recorded in 2023. Compared to the same period in 2022, this number is 43-percent higher. Children between ages five and nine years old made up almost half of the fatalities in the 2019 Philippine dengue virus outbreak. Although there is no cure for dengue, the disease can be managed early and there are many ways to prevent getting infected by it. Watsons recommends using products that will keep you and your family safe from mosquito bites. Since the virus originates from the bite of a dengue-carrying mosquito, it is also advisable to take preventive measures to keep mosquitoes away from your home. To keep you protected against dengue, here are some easy tips from Watsons that you can follow: Remove standing water around your house where mosquitoes could lay eggs. Cover and change the water in any storage containers. Make sure to repair any cracks or gaps in pipes or septic tanks. Use an insect spray made to kill mosquitoes in areas where they rest. Mosquitoes rest in dark, humid areas like under patio furniture, carports or garages. Prevent mosquitoes from entering your home by installing or repairing window and door screens. Do not leave doors propped open. The first line of defense against the dengue virus is boosting our immune system. Multivitamins such as Watsons Vitamin C + Zinc can help strengthen body’s defense and heal wounds faster by protecting and keeping cells healthy, and also maintaining healthy skin, blood vessels and bones and cartilage. Zinc also helps grow cells, build proteins and heal damaged tissues. To also protect yourself from other potential disease-carrying insects, insect repellent lotions and patches provide a safe and skin-friendly repellant that you can have on your person. These work great for traveling or when you’re outside frequently. Putting small drops of citronella essential oil around your home is a stylish and a more organic way to keep your home safe from disease-carrying insects. It’s also safe to apply on your skin. After being exposed to harsh weather changes or when we work ourselves beyond what our body can handle, getting sick can’t be avoided. If you start getting headaches or body pains, or you’re starting to feel a fever setting in, Watsons Paracetamol is always available. The rainy season brings various illnesses so make sure you stock up on Watsons Ambroxol and some lozenges as well to combat colds and coughs. Ambroxol clears congestion in respiratory diseases because it thins down and breaks up phlegm. Meanwhile, lozenges relieve sore throat, throat irritation and also help with cough relief. Alarming surge in dengue cases in Palawan
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — An uptick in the number of dengue cases in Palawan, recorded from the beginning of the year until June, has raised concerns regarding how to halt this trend. According to data released Tuesday, 4 July, by the Palawan Provincial Health Office (PHO), a total of 3,274 dengue cases have been recorded in various municipalities during the first half of 2023. Dr. Faye Erika Labrador, the chief of the PHO, expressed her concern and stated that the current situation can be deemed alarming or even classified as an outbreak. However, she said that the decision to declare a state of public health emergency or outbreak lies within the jurisdiction of the municipal governments. The municipality of Taytay recorded the highest number of cases with 1,079 followed by Bataraza with 425, Roxas with 413, Brooke's Point with 322, and Narra with 202. Taytay and Roxas are towns situated in northern Palawan, while the rest are in the southern part. “For this year, from January, we really noticed an increase in cases of dengue and other illnesses compared to last year. The cases in Taytay from up January to March this year is [already] higher compared to the whole of 2022,” Labrador said. Labrador said that in the specific case of Taytay, discussions are already underway within the Sangguniang Bayan regarding the potential declaration of an outbreak. In response to the current trend, she elaborated that they have heightened their efforts in spreading awareness about the viral infection in schools and communities, particularly in towns experiencing higher incidences. These are being done in cooperation with municipal health offices, the provincial office of the Department of Health (DOH), and other line agencies and stakeholders. The campaign focuses on promoting the 5S approach to combat dengue, which includes key practices such as search and destroy, self-protection, early consultation, support for fogging and misting, and maintaining proper hydration. Additionally, Labrador said that schools are actively promoting the use of protective clothing, such as long sleeves, and the application of insect repellents among students as crucial self-protection measures. The PHO has also started its vector analysis to determine the factors related to transmission. A team from the epidemiological unit of the Center for Health and Development (CHD) of the health department will arrive for the purpose. Meanwhile, during the Sangguniang Panlalawigan session on Tuesday, Board Member Marivic Roxas, who chairs the committee on health, emphasized that the increasing trend of dengue cases should not be overlooked and requires urgent attention. Roxas said a comprehensive program must be implemented to stop more Palaweños from falling ill because of dengue. "Let us take significant actions against the growing threat of dengue in our beloved province of Palawan by implementing preventive measures, promoting public health awareness, enhancing healthcare infrastructures and supporting research initiatives," she said in her privilege speech. She further appealed to the public and local government units to join forces in collaborative efforts aimed at addressing the infection, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. U.S. issues malaria alert
Five recorded cases of locally acquired malaria, the first in 20 years, prompted the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a health alert on Monday. Four cases of the mosquito -borne illness were confirmed in the counties of Sarasota and Manatee in the state of Florida and one in Cameron County, Texas, the CDC said in its health alert. “All patients have received treatment and are improving,” CDC said. Malaria is a serious and potentially fatal disease transmitted through the bite of an infective female anopheline mosquito. It can also be transmitted congenitally from mother to fetus or to the neonate at birth, through blood transfusion or organ transplantation, or through unsafe needle-sharing practices. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, myalgias, and fatigue. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur, according to CDC. For most people, symptoms begin 10 days to 4 weeks after infection, although a person may feel ill as early as 7 days or as late as 1 year after infection, CDC said. “Malaria is a medical emergency and should be treated accordingly,” it added. The health alert enjoins authorities to be on the lookout for additional cases and to implement mosquito control measures, according to health agency. CDC warned that Anopheles mosquitoes found in much of the US can transmit the disease if they feed on an infected person. “The risk is higher in areas where local climatic conditions allow the Anopheles mosquito to survive during most of or the entire year and where travelers from malaria-endemic areas are found,” CDC said. “Prompt diagnosis and treatment of people with malaria can prevent progression to severe disease or death and limit ongoing transmission to local Anopheles mosquitos,” it added. The last locally acquired malaria case in the US was in 2003 when eight cases were identified in Palm Beach County, Florida, according to the CDC. Almost all cases of malaria in the country are imported by people who have traveled from countries with malaria transmission. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, approximately 2,000 cases of mostly travel-related malaria were diagnosed in the US each year; approximately 300 people experienced severe disease and 5 to 10 people with malaria died yearly. Titan sub: what is a ‘catastrophic implosion’?
A "catastrophic implosion," such as that believed to have destroyed the Titan submersible, would have happened with incredible force and speed given the crushing water pressure on the floor of the ocean. The remains of the Titanic rest on the seabed in the North Atlantic at a depth of some 3,800 meters (12,400 feet). At sea level, atmospheric pressure is 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi). Water pressure at the depth where the ocean liner lies is equivalent to around 400 atmospheres, nearly 6,000 psi. As a comparison, the bite of a large great white shark exerts a force of nearly 4,000 psi, according to Scientific American. In an implosion caused by a defect in the hull or for some other reason, the submersible would collapse in on itself in milliseconds, crushed by the immense water pressure. Death would be virtually instantaneous for the occupants of the pressurized chamber. The Titan, built by OceanGate Inc. of Everett, Washington, was designed to sustain the extreme water pressure at the depth of the Titanic and had made previous dives to the wreck. But safety concerns had been raised, most notably in a lawsuit involving OceanGate's former director of marine operations, David Lochridge, who was fired in 2018 after warning about the Titan's "experimental" carbon fiber hull. Roderick Smith, an engineering professor at Imperial College, London, said the accident was likely due to a "failure of the pressure hull," but debris will need to be recovered to carry out a full investigation. And even then it may be difficult to pinpoint the cause. "The violence of the implosion means that it may be very difficult to determine the sequence of events," Smith said.
