Michael Leyva to showcase the best of Philippine textiles at Goldenberg Mansion
The staidly grand Goldenberg Mansion, one of the three Malacanang heritage houses recently reopened to the public, once again comes alive tonight with “Isang Pilipinas,” a showcase of Philippine indigenous and traditional textiles as interpreted by fashion designer du jour Michael Leyva. The third in the "Fashion at Goldenberg" series, a project of the First Lady, Liza Marcos Araneta, tonight’s expectedly dazzling show is Michael’s tribute to Filipino ingenuity, where “I am highlighting the Philippines’ rich heritage, culture, and history, especially through its textiles,” he explained to the Daily Tribune when we recently visited him at his Manila Peninsula showroom where he receives his clients, mostly prominent ladies of the country's social, political and economic firmaments. [caption id="attachment_168345" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Michael with Daily Tribune Social Set editor Jojo G. Silvestre[/caption] For this event, he traveled to Davao, Sultan Kudarat, Cebu, Albay, and Sorsogon to document the lives of the weavers and craftsmen. Tonight’s audience can thus expect a delightful and informative visual spectacle as one of the highlights of the show, which, weather hopefully permitting, will be held in the front garden of the heritage mansion. With Roby Carmona directing, as he had done in initial Goldenberg presentations, the show will surely be another excellent tribute to Filipino talent and craftsmanship, which the First Lady has been promoting through her many cultural heritage development projects. The powerhouse audience can look forward to witnessing Michael’s muses show off his creations, among them, senatorial wives, mayors, legislators, businesswomen, and outstanding personalities in various spheres of Philippine society. The list, a veritable who’s who includes senatorial wives Audrey Zubiri, Tootsy Angara, Kath Pimentel and Gladys Villanueva; Senator Nancy Binay; and Mayors Lani Revilla, Honey Lacuna, Imelda Calixto, Wes Gatchalian, and Dale Malapitan. Of his clients who are modeling his designs, Michael claims, “I am fortunate it is not difficult to design for them. It’s always a pleasure for me to dress them up. I believe it is because of the trust they give me, and I am grateful to them. This much-awaited event marks the latest milestone in Michael’s 10-year old career, which has seen him present his creations in various parts of the world including Los Angeles, Dubai, and Moscow, while just as busily dressing up the country’s movers and achievers. (He is off to the Paris fashion week soon.) The recent State of the Nation Address red carpet might have been his show, having been responsible for the outfits of some 100 legislators and their ladies, among them, Senator Grace Poe, Senator Nancy Binay and family, Senator Allan Cayetano, Senator Koko Pimentel and his wife Kath, Senator Raffy Tulfo and Congresswoman Jocelyn Tulfo, and easily the day’s most photographed lady, actress and fashion icon Heart Evangelista. A first for the National Museum When Michael Leyva celebrated his tenth anniversary in the world of fashion as a designer, he presented a show at the National Museum, a first in the history of the venerable institution, the foremost repository of the nation’s cultural treasures. While he was celebrating a milestone, the "momentous event, to me, was also my way of commemorating the memory of my brother, Brian, my childhood roommate and playmate, who has remained to be my angel, my guide, my mentor and my teacher all throughout. "He’s always been my inspiration in everything that I do. I know he’s there, he’s always part of it. He’s always beside me. Front, back, and side by side." Michael was first enamored with the cavernous halls of the National Museum when he did a shoot in 2018. " I told myself that this is where I will celebrate my 10th year. If it wasn't going to be here, I would rather not celebrate na lang. I wanted to be the first to showcase my creations in this historically significant building." Earlier, restriction pertaining to Covid were lifted, paving the way for the October 10, 2022 spectacle. "I presented a 55-piece collection,” he proudly shared. His muses, Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda, Pia Wurtzbach, led the list of models. Regine Velasquez sang at the finale. Eric Santos performed as well. He was elated that Inno Sotto, the foremost designer of his generation and the leading heir to the masters of the postwar era, had given his imprimatur through his presence. "I felt that his coming to my milestone show proves that I had already made it." A different look for the First Lady But to Michael, the biggest honor and affirmation came from the First Lady of the Philippines, Liza Araneta Marcos. "I missed meeting her when a number of us designers were invited to Malacanang to discuss her Likha project. I happened to be in Paris for a wedding. But I really wanted to meet her." [caption id="attachment_168346" align="aligncenter" width="525"] First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos and designer Michael Leyva viewing a fashion exhibit.[/caption] Finally, in September 2022, he was introduced to the First Lady in her Presidential Management Staff office. He invited her to his National Museum show, and she came. She wore a Michael Leyva Filipiniana, his first-ever creation for her. In time, they would develop a friendly collaboration based on trust and respect, anchored on her admiration for his talent. The next few months saw him designing many of her outfits worn on special occasions. Just recently, she wore her Michael Leyva outfits in Cebu and in the presidential visits to Kualalmpur, Malaysia, and Bangkok, Thailand. For the First Lady’s get-ups, which he posted on his FB wall, he received a lot of praises, mostly commenting on how he had been able to zero in on what would look best on the First Lady. [caption id="attachment_168349" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The First Lady in a Michael Leyva creation at the Audrey Hepburn exhibit, with Tessie Sy Coson and SM officials.[/caption] From day one, he has wanted a different look on her. “Being a designer, I had to explore possibilities. What was basic in my mind was I wanted her to look differently, and that people would notice once she wore my first dress. I wanted them to say, “she had changed in her fashion and grooming preferences.” And Michael did achieve his intention. [caption id="attachment_168351" align="aligncenter" width="525"] President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and FL Liza Araneta Marcos, in a Michael Leyva modern terno, with the King and Queen of Thailand[/caption] [caption id="attachment_168352" align="aligncenter" width="525"] President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and First Lady Liza Marcos Araneta during the president's state visit to Malaysia. The First Lady is in a Michael Leyva creation.[/caption] When people found out he had been responsible for the First Lady’s new look, they told him, “No wonder she now looks different.” An obvious change was in the length of her dresses, which originally was above the knee. “I felt that it would be more becoming for her to wear below-the-knee dresses,” he pointed out. The First Lady, he said, “wants comfortability. She doesn’t like corsets. And then, as much as possible, she wants to make use of Philippine textiles that we have here like calado, piña, and abel. She is the number one promoter of Philippine textile.” Of course, the First Lady will be his guest of honor in tonight’s fashion show, once again proving Michael’s eminence and popularity in his field, and the First Lady’s commitment to the uplift of weavers and embroiders of this beautiful country, the Philippines. Anne Curtis moved to tears by ‘Mini Ms. U’
[caption id="attachment_153719" align="aligncenter" width="525"] ANNICA Co. | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF MINI MS. U[/caption] The Multimedia Superstar Anne Curtis-Smith was brought to tears by a touching interaction with a young contestant during an impromptu segment on the popular noontime show It’s Showtime on 3 July. The poignant scene also won over the “madlang people.” The Filipina-Australian actress, who is a doting mother of three-year-old Dahlia Amelie, took to twitter and expressed her admiration for the child. “Genuinely kind and pure soul,” she described the young contestant in her tweet. Curtis-Smith continued to shower praises, acknowledging the parents of the child for instilling such beautiful values in her. She said that if more people possessed the kindness and purity demonstrated by the young contestant, the world would be free from hatred and harmful words. “Imagine if we were all like this. No hatred or harmful words would exist,” the television host stated. The remarkable contestant who sparked this emotional response from Anne was Annika Co, a seven-year-old hopeful from Muntinlupa City. Annika initially impressed both the hosts and the audience with her impressive singing talent. However, it was her spontaneous acting skills that left the studio cheering and Anne in tears. Annika took on the character of Vice Ganda’s best friend during an on-the-spot acting performance with the well-known comedian. Their characters were getting ready to sing a duet on stage in the skit, when Vice Ganda started to get nervous right before the performance. She comforted Vice Ganda’s character by saying, “Who cares if the others don’t like you? I like you and everybody else does. What matters is somebody still likes you. If some people don’t like you, then it’s fine. What’s important is someone still likes you.” Annika also reminded Vice Ganda, “You shouldn’t be worrying about if you’ll be the best in the world. You have to be the best version of yourself.” Anne could be observed clapping along with the “madlang people” during this moving scene as Annika spoke her words. Anne cries caught Vice Ganda’s attention, and said, “Naiyak ako kasi (I was moved because) it was so pure na parang (that) if everyone could be as kind as this child, wala nang (there would be no) hatred sa mundo (in the world). It was so innocent and pure. So beautiful.” Annika Co ultimately won the daily title of “Mini Ms. U,” beating out two other competitors and making an impression on the audience. Recently, It’s Showtime! achieved a historic milestone on Philippine television when it made its formal premiere on the GTV Channel, a joint venture of ABS-CBN and GMA. The program is still being shown on a number of channels, such as Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, GTV, A2Z, iWantTFC and TFC. Teary-eyed Anne Curtis praises It’s Showtime contestant’s empowering words
GTV's "It's Showtime" host Anne Curtis summed up the reaction of the viewers to the empowering words of Annika, a "Mini Ms. U" contestant in one of the segments of the show. The contestant was given a situation where she was asked what she would say to her "friend" who was having a hard time singing in front of an audience. How Annika responded with words of affirmation moved Curtis and the audience: "If some people don't like you, then it's fine. What's important is someone still likes you. You shouldn't be worrying about if you'll be the best in the world, you have to be the best version of yourself." Curtis, who was seen teary-eyed in the background, praised the contestant and her parents. "What a genuinely kind and pure soul. Bless her heart. ‘Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile’ cast reflects on taking risks
Picture this: You’re in a daze, recalling every stolen glance and shared laugh with your special friend, sensing something else there -- something akin to brewing romance. It’s a classic conundrum that may leave you feeling both edgy and thrilled -- and it’s something that Angge (Yukii Takahashi) and Bryce (Wilbert Ross), lead characters of Puregold Channel’s Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile, know only too well. Would you risk it all and bare your feelings, potentially transforming the entire dynamic of your relationship? Would it be worth putting your precious friendship at risk? As Angge and Bryce grapple with the overwhelming urge to declare their feelings, cast members of the hit series Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile ponder on how a leap of faith can lead to true love -- or the loss of a cherished friend. Migs Almendras, who plays Ketch in the digital series, says, “I would not confess, because I value the friendship much more than the idea of being in a relationship with that person.” TJ Valderrama, who stars as Cyrus, learned his own lessons the hard way. “I tried to bare my feelings for the person I liked, but it ended up jeopardizing our friendship. Things turned awkward between us and soon, we weren’t as close as we used to be. These days, when it looks like I’m getting feelings for a friend, I shrug it off or distance myself a little.” Courage can also be a factor, as Anjo Resurreccion, who plays Jerry, puts it, “Being the torpe that I am, I wouldn’t confess my feelings to anyone. I don’t like going through the pain of rejection.” On the other hand, other characters of Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile feel that ‘fessing up is the way to go. Kat Galang, Genski in the series, shares, “There is nothing wrong in expressing how you really feel, especially if it’s something special. I want to be honest to my friend whom I have special feelings for, and I won’t expect anything in return. Plus points kung gusto ka din niya. If not, eh ‘di back to friendship!” Lead actor Yukii Takahashi, Angge in the series, believes that we should be honest with our feelings. “I would let the other person know how I truly feel, and see if something good comes out of it.” Wilbert Ross, who plays Ang Lalaki star Bryce, says there are people who are okay with being friends, and are reluctant to ruin the friendship especially when feelings aren’t mutual. “I think we will be able to sense, even just a little, if our friend has feelings for us too. If this is the case, then why not confess? Maybe it will become something more!” While they have differing views on the issue, everyone agrees that friendship makes for a strong basis for a lasting relationship. Moi Marcampo, who stars as Chili Anne, says, “Every relationship goes through friendship. It’s better that you know each other well before deciding to be together romantically.” To this, Star Orjaliza or Yaya Aimee in ALSLNP agrees. “You need a foundation. You need to get to know each other before you enter the next level.” More cast members talk about friendship being the foundation to a romantic relationship, like TJ and Kat. “Friendship is very important in a relationship. Things become a little easier. Relationships require a lot of work, but if you’re experiencing life and relationships with your lover who is also your friend, it becomes more beautiful,” says TJ. “There is a certain respect that both parties have established as friends, which, for me, is stronger than love,” Anjo affirms. Kat adds, “At the end of the day, the partnership feels more genuine because you know each other on a deeper level than romance.” Marissa Sanchez, who plays Bryce’s mom Bessie, takes it to an even higher level and mentions marriage. “A friendship knows no boundaries, while being in a relationship can be circumscribed. That’s why the advice I always give to young people is: marry a friend.” Yukii affirms this. “If you are dating to marry, your partner should be your best friend, because friendship is the core of any healthy relationship.” Of course, Wilbert has the same perspective. “The best partner is your best friend, someone who will always be there for you, and someone who can rely on you, for better or for worse.” In recent episodes of the digital series, Bryce and Angge have crossed the virtual barrier and become real-life friends. While inclined to keep the status, both characters are finding their growing feelings difficult to deny. Will Angge and Bryce lay their hearts on the line, finally leading to a romantic relationship? Or will factors such as old loves and family affairs get in the way of their love story? Catch the newest episode of Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile on June 24, 7 p.m., in the official Puregold YouTube Channel. Camille Pascual, of British Empire’s Most Excellent Order
My good friend, prominent banker Federico “Ding” Pascual, shared with me news about his daughter, Camille, who has just been bestowed by His Majesty The King with the honorific title of “Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.” On the occasion of His Majesty’s birthday, selected individuals are recognized twice a year for their services to the United Kingdom. Camille, who is the Marketing and Communications Head of the British Embassy in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, was officially honored on 23 May as an MBE for her services in promoting British Trade and Investment in the Middle East by Princess Anne at Windsor Castle. Below is an abridged version of Camille’s first-hand account of her investiture as an MBE. “I looked at my mobile one Saturday evening last year and saw that I had missed four calls from HM Trade Commissioner for the Middle East, Simon Penney. I immediately called him back as I was concerned that I would have to handle an urgent work request. He asked if I was sitting down. I wasn’t, so he told me to sit down and then proceeded to congratulate me, saying I had been awarded an MBE in HM The Queen’s Birthday Honors. The Honors List would be published in The Gazette — the UK’s official public record — on the 1st of June. I burst into tears. “Will you accept?” asked Simon. “Of course!” I replied. He swore me to secrecy, but that I could tell my husband and no one else until the Birthday Honors List was published. I have worked for the British Embassy in Dubai for 13 years, promoting the UK in the Middle East and Africa as a place to trade with, invest in, and do business with. Over the years I have supported hundreds of British companies, championing UK capability across all sectors from Infrastructure and Energy to Healthcare and Education. Outside the trade and investment sphere at the British Embassy, I was media lead working in Crisis Communications, including during the Covid lockdown to support stranded British nationals, and during the Afghanistan evacuation of 15,000 people to the UK through the UAE. When I told my parents on the morning of the day it was being announced, they could not have been prouder. We moved to the UK in 1982 when my father was posted there to head the Philippine National Bank’s European Headquarters. During our years in the UK, we traveled up and down the country and regularly visited many of the Royal Palaces: Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Hampton Court Palace, among others. We would stand with the crowds during the Trooping of the Color on HM The Queen’s official birthday in June. Suffice it to say that my parents have always been Anglophiles, with a deep love of the UK, so my MBE means as much to them as it does to me. Indeed, I would not have received this Honor had it not been for them. The investiture itself only lasted a few moments, but the memory will last forever. On the day of the Investiture, the weather was glorious, and Windsor Castle could not have been more beautiful in the spring sunshine. We were ushered up a grand staircase, past a string quartet, and into the Queen’s Drawing Room to await our turn under the portraits of Henry VIII and Charles II. We were given a program which told us that it would be HRH The Princess Royal — Princess Anne — who would be formally investing me into the Order. I was one of nearly sixty people being invested that day — a mix of civilians, military and civil servants. At the top of the list of recipients was Sir Salman Rushdie, who was invested as a Companion of Honor. When it was my turn, my family and I entered the castle’s Grand Reception Room, a stunning, ornate, gilded room decorated with magnificent chandeliers. They stood to the side of the dais where The Princess Royal stood. I felt nervous as I approached the dais, curtseyed, and walked towards her, but she was smiling and kind as she congratulated me and hung my medal on the small loop that had been clipped to my dress. She asked me what had brought me to Dubai and we chatted briefly about my time at the Embassy and she commented that our relationship with the UAE was very important. I thanked her for her support of charities active in the Philippines, and for her visits there, mentioning that my family and I had moved to the UK when I was eight. She thanked me again, shook my hand, and I retreated a few steps, curtseyed again, and joined my family. The investiture itself only lasted a few moments, but the memory will last forever. We moved to St. George’s Hall for official photos, and then outside and into the sunshine to take our own photos in the courtyard. As we walked through the grounds to leave the castle, a group of four Coldstream Guards in their red jackets and bearskin hats marched past. A perfect sendoff to mark the end of a truly magical experience.” Until next week… OBF! For comments, email bing_matoto@yahoo.com.
