Debunking Misconceptions: Sustainable living doesn’t have to be expensive
A sustainable lifestyle is often associated with exclusivity, as many say it comes with great expense. Yet Pacita “Chit” Juan, founder of the Echostore, a social enterprise and retail store carrying green, fair trade products, begs to differ. The Echostore was first conceptualized back in 2008, a time when sustainable living was not as widely known and given great importance as much as it is now, making Chit Juan, along with two other women who also founded the enterprise, pioneers to the green living trending the country — a fact she claims to be her biggest achievement in all 15 years of the Echostore. “Kailangan may mag-umpisa eh (There has to be someone who starts),” Chit says. Adopting a sustainable lifestyle requires choice and dedication as it does not happen overnight, much as Chit and her co-founders’ decision to launch their business at a time when consumers were still somewhat unfamiliar with the idea of sustainable living. It took them many years before the Echostore really took off, according to Chit. She even recalls how many detractors they had during the first few years of the enterprise, saying the Echostore would shut down immediately. Yet, she proudly declares that she is pleased that they were still successful in launching the business despite negativity. In fact, this month of September marks its 15th year. [caption id="attachment_186641" align="aligncenter" width="458"] Photograph courtesy of ECHOSTORE CULINARY Virgin Coconut Oil.[/caption] She really believed that when something is dedicated to a purpose, it will succeed. “‘Pag mission-driven kasi, it will always succeed (When something is mission driven, it will always succeed),” she says. Even the pandemic did not put the store into a halt. Chit in fact says that it paved a way to further boost their online sales. “Priorities lang talaga (It’s all a matter of priorities),” Chits ays. She argues that the notion of sustainable living being expensive is merely relative and a matter of whether the person is fully ready to shift and commit to that lifestyle.“Bakit ‘pag bumili ka ng large drink sa Starbucks, hindi mahal? (How come a large Starbucks drink doesn’t seem so expensive to you?)” she quips. However, Chit does not deny the fact that sustainable products are indeed significantly more expensive than ordinary ones, as she says that a big contributing element to this is the fact that sustainable products have not yet achieved a significant market scale. Yet, she contends that sustainable living does not necessarily have to be absolute. “You don’t have to be vegetarian all the way. Gusto mo Monday ka lang meatless, o kaya Friday (You don’t have to be vegetarian all the way. If you want, you can just skip meat on Mondays and Fridays).”Those two days spent not eating meat is already a big step in integrating a sustainable lifestyle. So is using a water bottle or a metal straw, adds Chit. “Baby steps,” she says. “Baby steps, and before you know it, it becomes part of your lifestyle.” It is all about knowing your options in the things you do every day, according to Chit. Whether it is what you eat for breakfast or how you get to work every day. Being a responsible consumer is, after all, what sustainable living is truly about, adds Chit. This is why she expresses her joy that the Echostore was able to be exposed to the Gen Z‘s, as she says they are the ones especially mindful of the environment and the importance of sustainable living. “I have great faith in Gen Z, kasi pinanganak sila sa challenges ng climatechange. It’s your generation now who will bring this to the mainstream (I have great faith in Gen Z because they were born into the challenges of climate change. It’s your generation now who will bring this to mainstream),” Chit says. Menchu Katigbak: The splendid life of a society swan
Hers is a story anyone would love to tell and retell, or hear and hear again. Chances are, as in the book of Menchu, so many things are left unsaid because if these were all said, a single book would not be enough. Carmencita “Menchu” Katigbak’s story is one of love, passion, hurts and disappointments, social triumphs and power in its subtle workings, but mostly the good life and the people who live it and make it happen. She is a woman of the world in the sense of one who has lived in, explored and enjoyed New York, Bangkok, Lausanne, Paris and, her current love, Singapore. Of course, her turf is in Manila with a Capital S and Capital P (as in Power), and Lipa the hometown of her roots. [caption id="attachment_180060" align="aligncenter" width="958"] MENCHU with best friend Susie and her daughter Marivic.[/caption] At a time when the term “socialite” can come cheap, trite or even undeserved, Menchu gives the appellation dignity, respect and the awe it once inspired. Her social credentials are, of course, impeccable. For starters, she attended the Chateau Mont-Choisi, a Swiss finishing school for debutantes and pre-debs belonging to royalty and the world’s upper crust. A socialite today, in loose modern parlance, is perceived as being frivolous, one who attends parties because these men and women are party animals, or party people, as one columnist has named her weekly jottings about the social events of the day. The enjoyment of life is what defines this breed and set, and yet, while Menchu, too, knows how to enjoy, and enjoy life with gusto, there is more to her and that differentiates her from the herd. No, she does not top her charmed life with an icing of well-publicized good deeds and philanthropic beneficence, even if she actually shares her bounty with those in need. Menchu is of a different mold. She is a society swan in the manner of Truman Capote’s chums — Babe Paley, Gloria Guinness, Lee Radziwill. In our part of the world, think Chona, think Minnie, think Chito. She may well be cast in the same crème de la creme mold, glamorous denizens of the inner circles of society, at the same time, ladies who have transcended the vagaries of time. Just recently, Menchu was referred to by a diplomat friend as a global influencer, a 21st-century appellation that only a few are accorded. This one is applied to one who was once a señorita, colegiala and, yes, society girl, again in the tradition of Chona, Baby, Nelly, Chito and Ising. ‘The Katigbaks talk only to the Kalaws’ They don’t need family names, each as important as the other and of the same significance in society. Still, it’s one thing to say that she is Baby Fores, and another if she is Baby Arenas. There were two Vickys, one of national import and memory being the lovely teenager who stood as her father’s First Lady in the early 1950s, and there was the Madrigal matron, Vicky nee Abad Santos, who was low-key and the daughter of the World War II patriot, Jose Abad Santos, who refused to pledge allegiance to the flag of the enemies. Menchu shares first name distinction with Menchu delas Alas Concepcion, also of Batangueña parentage, being the daughter of banker and finance guy and public servant Don Antonio de las Alas. Both aristocrats from Batangas, the two Menchus share many distinctions beauty for one, pedigree, for the other—but that’s as far as I would say, the aforementioned traits being obvious. But to drive his point, Joe Guevarra, the humorous and well-placed columnist known for his tongue-in-cheek pronouncements, once said of the olden times, when the genealogical boundaries were well-defined, “In Lipa, the Katigbaks talk only to the Kalaws, and the Kalaws talk only to the Katigbaks.” [caption id="attachment_180057" align="aligncenter" width="998"] DINNER in Pili with Fernando and Zobel, Tessie Sy-Coson, Guilly Luchangco, Federico ‘Piki’ Lopez | photograph courtesy of MENCHU KATIGBAK[/caption] This self-confessed social climber, as his 8-to-5-and-beyond job would require him to be, admits to not having met (okay, having been introduced to…) the ebullient society hostess, traveler, culinary maven and friend-to-the-powerful Menchu Katigbak. Everything that I am writing here, I learned from the lady’s biography, Menchu, authored by lifestyle journalism icon Thelma Sioson San Juan, the two being decades-old friends. Menchu, one finds out toward the end of the book, is the inspiration for her granddaughter Isabelle’s first tome, Abu, the Sad Princess. I look back on the pages I have read, the memories of Menchu’s lifetime so far, in all its seven glorious and electrifying decades, and I dare say, the description is most apt and is true as well in real life as Menchu today is “living happily ever after” having come to terms with the many issues that confronted her at various times, but more importantly, she is today a fulfilled mother and grandmother and a believer in Jesus Christ. But that is getting ahead of the story. ‘White Matter’ by Lao Lianben Jaime Ponce de Leon, dear Jaime, the man of the hour of Philippine arts for as long as Juan Luna’s missing masterpiece, remains ensconced at the Ayala Museum – gaining for the discoverer more than a foothold in our cultural history – asked me if I was interested in writing about the socially formidable Menchu Katigbak, and I readily said yes, having seen her photographs in the select and more discriminating society pages and columns. I thought to myself it would be an opportunity to meet the lady face to face and add her to my glossary of so-called newfound friends, but that was not meant to be. I was, oh, I was treated to the next best thing – a copy of Menchu which, to someone who aspires to be a bibliophile, is all that matters in the world, except that I am first a social climber. And since I have not been allowed an audience, I take solace in the book and, as my honeyed revenge, will tell you what I feel about the lady who, I understand, could be frank and outspoken. Abrasive is too strong a word, and unfair for I am not sure if I will ever meet her in my lifetime, but I am told the lady will never mince words, that’s probably why she has legions of true friends who probably can give as much as take, or so I am imagining. [caption id="attachment_180055" align="aligncenter" width="1475"] Lunch in the kitchen in Pili with Patty Araneta (left) and Monet Recio-Schem.[/caption] A painting that Menchu has kept all these years, “White Matter” by Lao Lianben, signed and dated 1997, has been featured as one of the rare pieces to be auctioned in Leon Gallery’s forthcoming magnificent September auction, with the starting bid of P2,600,000. So, there, if you’re wondering what Jaime, who moves around the best circles, has got to do with this enigmatic swan. ‘We are not rich’ But let’s stick to what the book says. While she intersperses in her narrative personal encounters with her subject, TSJ, for the most part, devotes the pages of this book to Menchu alone, and with our cosmopolitan lady, the many friends in the upper echelons whose lives she has touched and who have touched hers in turn. Menchu, once she was ready to be told, heard it straight from her mother, “Tandaan mo, baka akala mo mayaman tayo. Hindi tayo mayaman. Kung napadala ka namin sa Switzerland at si Tita at si Tony napadala naming sa America, kasi nagpawis ako ng dugo (Remember, you may think we are rich, we are not rich. If we sent you to Switzerland and Tita and Tony to America, it was because I sweated blood). If you think you’re going to inherit something from us, banish the thought. So if you don’t study well, bahala ka sa sarili mo (you’re on your own).” The perfect words for the Asuncionista (Assumptionista) who much preferred to bake food for the gods, brownies and upside-down cakes and do naughty things like hiding the bell used to signal the start and end of class periods. Her mother, the former Charing Roxas Dimayuga, who attended Assumption Convent, dealt in buying, developing and selling homes in the gated Makati villages. She also developed horizontal and vertical commercial spaces as well as imported retazos from abroad. [caption id="attachment_180056" align="aligncenter" width="696"] Wearing the Van Cleef earrings purchased before their public launch.[/caption] Her father, Enrique Luz Katigbak, on the other hand, was a top certified public accountant, an alumnus of the Northwestern University and a director on the boards of Monte de Piedad and Philtrust banks. Of his connections, none is more eminent than his friendship with His Eminence, Rufino Cardinal Santos, archbishop of Manila and the first Filipino Cardinal of the Catholic Church. It was not a happenstance that Menchu received the sacrament of confirmation from the Cardinal himself right in the Katigbak home, the first ever that was held in a private home if any other followed at all. Like most children, Menchu recalls in the book how she detested being “slapped” by the pious prelate. If she was any pleased about her family’s closeness to the holy man, it was that the Assumption sisters did not expel her for her not-too-infrequent infractions because they went to her father if they needed something from the Cardinal. Dona Aurora Recto for a ‘guardian’ Hers was a lonely childhood since her older siblings were away. They were the triple seven, which alluded to their being born seven years apart, with Menchu as the youngest. On certain days, her parents, both busy, would deposit her in the home of the statesman Claro M. Recto where she would play with his favorite granddaughter, Techie, who had all these toys, Menchu could not help realizing her parents did not buy her a toy. She played with her jackstones while Techie had a closetful of toys, including a toy “cash register.” Techie was so generous she was giving this fancy plaything to her, but Menchu refused knowing her mother would not approve. What she remembers best of that time was the sight of Dona Aurora, the first beautiful woman she beheld in her young mind and eyes, and from her, she learned her first lessons in etiquette, because the family ate with a full complement of silverware and flatware. An Evening with Club Bulakeño Royalty
I spent an evening in the presence of royalty. Club Bulakeño made a regal comeback with highly anticipated ball after three years of hiatus due to the pandemic! This year’s theme brought European Royalty to the Manila Hotel, dubbing the night as “A Royal Affair: A Night of Majestic Opulence.” [caption id="attachment_177753" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Mario Katigbak, Baby Tan, Milo Bondoc, Ofelia Trinidad, Sonny Tanchanco, Nedy Tantoco and Patrick Jacinto.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_177763" align="aligncenter" width="1368"] Joel Cruz, Edgard Cabangon, Gerard Ramirez and Nini Licaros.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_177769" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Malou Martinez, Ruby Chua, Angola Consul Helen Ong and Irene Montemayor.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_177765" align="aligncenter" width="1199"] Yoli Ayson and Beging Soriano.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_177764" align="aligncenter" width="1199"] Shirley Sobremonte and Roselle Rebano.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_177762" align="aligncenter" width="1199"] Shelly Lazaro and Florence Monzon.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_177761" align="aligncenter" width="1484"] Connie Garcia and Shilpa Tolani.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_177760" align="aligncenter" width="1199"] Becky Garcia, Cocoy Cordoba and Mayenne Carmona.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_177759" align="aligncenter" width="1445"] Atty. Kings and queens arrived in ornate attire at the Manila Hotel Ballroom, transformed into a rich, red Royal Court. The night started with a dance, followed by the entrance of the servers who were also dressed as courtiers. It was like being transported back to the Renaissance era. A feast fit for kings and queens satiated us for an eventful night ahead. The juicy steak was cooked to perfection, which we savored with the flawless sound of live opera serenading us. As for dessert? We got a feast for the eyes as the past Club Bulakeño queens descended the grand staircase. Not long after, this year’s crowned Club Bulakeño muse, Angel Fenton, walked in with Prince Abdullah Dellah of Kuwait. She was joined by her proud father, Ian Grant, for her first waltz, while her mother, Marissa Fenton, was glowing with pride as she sat regally on her chair, as though the queen mother’s throne. Sounds like modern royalty to me with a touch of history! Before being dismissed from the royal festivities, we were treated to a grand raffle, giving a lucky few something to remember the evening by. One last curtsy to the royal court and we were off on our own chariot rides home from one of the most exquisite evenings ever. Already, we are looking forward to the next Club Bulakeño Ball. You gotta believe me. Cheers! The post An Evening with Club Bulakeño Royalty appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Dirty Linen’ down to its last 2 scorching weeks
Was Dolly de Leon invited to the final media conference on Wednesday afternoon, 16 August, for the ABS-CBN series Dirty Linen, but her schedule of local commitments prevented her from accepting the invite? Or did the production decide not to have her around because she would steal the limelight from all the show’s stars even without trying? [caption id="attachment_172737" align="aligncenter" width="843"] Dolly de Leon. | Photograph Courtesy Of Ig/Dolly De Leon.[/caption] The media huddle was held just two days after De Leon walked off with a Balanghai trophy as Best Supporting Actress at the Cinemalaya 2023 for her portrayal of a loving mother to a speech-deprived son in Iti Mapukpukaw, an Ilocano animated film which also won Best Picture in the festival. It was De Leon’s second Philippine award, but the first ever she received personally. The first one was from the Famas in a digital awards in 2021 for her work in Verdict. It was also for Best Supporting Actress, and the Best Actress winner then was Janine Gutierrez for Babae at Baril, which had also won for her Best Actress from the Urian of the critics group Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino. Gutierrez topbills Dirty Linen. The death of Olivia, the mistress-household help character portrayed by De Leon in the grandiosely and glamorously ruthless series, is what ignited the intensely engaging revenge drama that is slated to end in two weeks. It was a special guest role De Leon breezed through soon after her breakthrough appearance in Triangle of Sadness, which landed her at the Cannes International Film Festival, unarguably the most prestigious film festival in the world. Her character’s death in Dirty Linen became a big deal only because it led to the killing of some other members of the household staff who had the bad luck of seeing Olivia’s corpse in the living room before it was dragged into a nearby pit. They were all servants of the Fierros, an evil wealthy family in some provincial town. The family is headed by fierce matriarch Doña Cielo (Tessie Tomas), with her only son Carlos (John Arcilla) and Carlos’ son Aidan (Zanjoe Marudo). Angel Aquino portrays Feliz, the unwanted and unhappy daughter of the Fieros, while Janice de Belen is Leona, the cold-blooded wife of Carlos and mother of their two children, one of whom is the daughter portrayed by young star Francine Diaz. Epy Quizon portrays Ador, the husband of Feliz whose desire to give her and their two children (Xyriel Manabat and Raven Rigor) a well-off life that could somehow match that of the Fierros led him to keeping a secret pornography business that Mila discovers and exposes during a party meant to honor Doña Cielo. Christian Bables plays a digital expert who can hack any digital system as part of the revenge plot. Changing the landscape De Leon was once quoted in an interview as saying that Dirty Linen is “changing the landscape of Philippine television.” Tomas, who was at the media huddle at Studio 10 of ABS-CBN, declared that Dirty Linen is the best show she has ever been. Though more famous in her younger years as a stand-up comedian who parodied weird well-off women, Tomas is indeed a veteran of TV shows in varying genres. Gutierrez did her best not to cry in gratefulness for the opportunity of topbilling what seems to be ABS-CBN’s most expensive drama series. The Fierro mansion is a triumph in opulent production design, since the location is not a residence but the refashioned clubhouse of Summit Point, a popular golf and country club in Lipa City, Batangas — a project of Sta. Lucia Land Inc. The show’s production designer is Nancy Arcega, who’s been at her work for over 30 years now. It’s hard to argue against claims that Dirty Linen is the best Filipino-produced drama series in the country so far. But for us, personally, it is so far the series that has the most sordid storyline and characters. Practically everyone is evil in varying degrees. And Pinoys love it, for better or for worse. ABS-CBN says the series has gone over a billion views since it was launched on several platforms in January this year. Almost all the major cast members of the series turned up at the media huddle. Only Jenica Garcia, Andrea del Rosario and Soliman Cruz were not there. The post ‘Dirty Linen’ down to its last 2 scorching weeks appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Michael Leyva to showcase the best of Philippine textiles at Goldenberg Mansion
The staidly grand Goldenberg Mansion, one of the three Malacanang heritage houses recently reopened to the public, once again comes alive tonight with “Isang Pilipinas,” a showcase of Philippine indigenous and traditional textiles as interpreted by fashion designer du jour Michael Leyva. The third in the "Fashion at Goldenberg" series, a project of the First Lady, Liza Marcos Araneta, tonight’s expectedly dazzling show is Michael’s tribute to Filipino ingenuity, where “I am highlighting the Philippines’ rich heritage, culture, and history, especially through its textiles,” he explained to the Daily Tribune when we recently visited him at his Manila Peninsula showroom where he receives his clients, mostly prominent ladies of the country's social, political and economic firmaments. [caption id="attachment_168345" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Michael with Daily Tribune Social Set editor Jojo G. Silvestre[/caption] For this event, he traveled to Davao, Sultan Kudarat, Cebu, Albay, and Sorsogon to document the lives of the weavers and craftsmen. Tonight’s audience can thus expect a delightful and informative visual spectacle as one of the highlights of the show, which, weather hopefully permitting, will be held in the front garden of the heritage mansion. With Roby Carmona directing, as he had done in initial Goldenberg presentations, the show will surely be another excellent tribute to Filipino talent and craftsmanship, which the First Lady has been promoting through her many cultural heritage development projects. The powerhouse audience can look forward to witnessing Michael’s muses show off his creations, among them, senatorial wives, mayors, legislators, businesswomen, and outstanding personalities in various spheres of Philippine society. The list, a veritable who’s who includes senatorial wives Audrey Zubiri, Tootsy Angara, Kath Pimentel and Gladys Villanueva; Senator Nancy Binay; and Mayors Lani Revilla, Honey Lacuna, Imelda Calixto, Wes Gatchalian, and Dale Malapitan. Of his clients who are modeling his designs, Michael claims, “I am fortunate it is not difficult to design for them. It’s always a pleasure for me to dress them up. I believe it is because of the trust they give me, and I am grateful to them. This much-awaited event marks the latest milestone in Michael’s 10-year old career, which has seen him present his creations in various parts of the world including Los Angeles, Dubai, and Moscow, while just as busily dressing up the country’s movers and achievers. (He is off to the Paris fashion week soon.) The recent State of the Nation Address red carpet might have been his show, having been responsible for the outfits of some 100 legislators and their ladies, among them, Senator Grace Poe, Senator Nancy Binay and family, Senator Allan Cayetano, Senator Koko Pimentel and his wife Kath, Senator Raffy Tulfo and Congresswoman Jocelyn Tulfo, and easily the day’s most photographed lady, actress and fashion icon Heart Evangelista. A first for the National Museum When Michael Leyva celebrated his tenth anniversary in the world of fashion as a designer, he presented a show at the National Museum, a first in the history of the venerable institution, the foremost repository of the nation’s cultural treasures. While he was celebrating a milestone, the "momentous event, to me, was also my way of commemorating the memory of my brother, Brian, my childhood roommate and playmate, who has remained to be my angel, my guide, my mentor and my teacher all throughout. "He’s always been my inspiration in everything that I do. I know he’s there, he’s always part of it. He’s always beside me. Front, back, and side by side." Michael was first enamored with the cavernous halls of the National Museum when he did a shoot in 2018. " I told myself that this is where I will celebrate my 10th year. If it wasn't going to be here, I would rather not celebrate na lang. I wanted to be the first to showcase my creations in this historically significant building." Earlier, restriction pertaining to Covid were lifted, paving the way for the October 10, 2022 spectacle. "I presented a 55-piece collection,” he proudly shared. His muses, Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda, Pia Wurtzbach, led the list of models. Regine Velasquez sang at the finale. Eric Santos performed as well. He was elated that Inno Sotto, the foremost designer of his generation and the leading heir to the masters of the postwar era, had given his imprimatur through his presence. "I felt that his coming to my milestone show proves that I had already made it." A different look for the First Lady But to Michael, the biggest honor and affirmation came from the First Lady of the Philippines, Liza Araneta Marcos. "I missed meeting her when a number of us designers were invited to Malacanang to discuss her Likha project. I happened to be in Paris for a wedding. But I really wanted to meet her." [caption id="attachment_168346" align="aligncenter" width="525"] First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos and designer Michael Leyva viewing a fashion exhibit.[/caption] Finally, in September 2022, he was introduced to the First Lady in her Presidential Management Staff office. He invited her to his National Museum show, and she came. She wore a Michael Leyva Filipiniana, his first-ever creation for her. In time, they would develop a friendly collaboration based on trust and respect, anchored on her admiration for his talent. The next few months saw him designing many of her outfits worn on special occasions. Just recently, she wore her Michael Leyva outfits in Cebu and in the presidential visits to Kualalmpur, Malaysia, and Bangkok, Thailand. For the First Lady’s get-ups, which he posted on his FB wall, he received a lot of praises, mostly commenting on how he had been able to zero in on what would look best on the First Lady. [caption id="attachment_168349" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The First Lady in a Michael Leyva creation at the Audrey Hepburn exhibit, with Tessie Sy Coson and SM officials.[/caption] From day one, he has wanted a different look on her. “Being a designer, I had to explore possibilities. What was basic in my mind was I wanted her to look differently, and that people would notice once she wore my first dress. I wanted them to say, “she had changed in her fashion and grooming preferences.” And Michael did achieve his intention. [caption id="attachment_168351" align="aligncenter" width="525"] President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and FL Liza Araneta Marcos, in a Michael Leyva modern terno, with the King and Queen of Thailand[/caption] [caption id="attachment_168352" align="aligncenter" width="525"] President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and First Lady Liza Marcos Araneta during the president's state visit to Malaysia. The First Lady is in a Michael Leyva creation.[/caption] When people found out he had been responsible for the First Lady’s new look, they told him, “No wonder she now looks different.” An obvious change was in the length of her dresses, which originally was above the knee. “I felt that it would be more becoming for her to wear below-the-knee dresses,” he pointed out. The First Lady, he said, “wants comfortability. She doesn’t like corsets. And then, as much as possible, she wants to make use of Philippine textiles that we have here like calado, piña, and abel. She is the number one promoter of Philippine textile.” Of course, the First Lady will be his guest of honor in tonight’s fashion show, once again proving Michael’s eminence and popularity in his field, and the First Lady’s commitment to the uplift of weavers and embroiders of this beautiful country, the Philippines. Mission: Impossible’ returns, topping N.America box office
The seventh installment of the "Mission Impossible" franchise was No. 1 at North American box offices this weekend, Sunday estimates showed, scaring off horror flick "Insidious: The Red Door" from last weekend's top spot. Paramount's "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One," the latest in the long-running series starring Tom Cruise, brought in $52.6 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported. David A. Gross, of Franchise Entertainment Research, called the opening "roughly average for an action thriller at this point in its series." "Foreign markets are where action movies excel, and the overseas openings are strong, with the exception of China, which is good-not-great," Gross added. Coming in at second place this weekend was "Sound of Freedom," a controversial action thriller from Santa Fe Films and Angel Studios. Jim Caviezel stars in a story based on the life of former US government agent Tim Ballard, who says he has rescued more than 100 children from Colombian sex traffickers. The film has found an audience among Christian conservatives. Critics say "Sound" plays into wild QAnon conspiracy theories about a pedophilic international cabal that kidnaps children and harvests their blood. Commentators on the conservative broadcaster Fox News, meanwhile, have pushed back against detractors among the "liberal media." Angel Studios denies that its film warps the truth, though Caviezel and Ballard have both embraced some extreme QAnon claims. Despite the controversy, or perhaps because of it, the film brought in $27 million over the weekend, bringing its total up to $85 million so far. "Insidious: The Red Door," from Sony, brought in $13 million, down to third place in theaters after its $33 million opening last weekend. "Insidious," the fifth installment in the titular horror series, was followed by another franchise sequel, Disney's "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." This "Indy" episode, likely the last, again stars Harrison Ford as a whip-cracking archeologist, and took in $12 million. In fifth was Disney/Pixar's "Elemental," an animated immigrant fable that brought in $8.7 million. Rounding out the top 10 were: "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" ($6 million) "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" ($3.4 million) "No Hard Feelings" (3.3 million) "Joy Ride" (2.57 million) The Little Mermaid" ($2.35 million) The post Mission: Impossible’ returns, topping N.America box office appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Insidious’ whips past ‘Indy 5’ to top N.America box office
Sony's horror film "Insidious: The Red Door" scared its way to the top of the North American box office on a slow weekend, taking in an estimated $32.7 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday. The dark tale of astral projection and demonic possession, starring and directed by Patrick Wilson, had weak reviews. Still, for the fifth installment of a horror franchise it enjoyed "an excellent opening," said entertainment analyst David A. Gross. The film, a co-production of Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films, and Blumhouse, dethroned Disney's "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which had logged weaker-than-expected numbers in its debut last weekend. This fifth "Indy" episode, again starring Harrison Ford as a whip-cracking archeologist, took in $26.5 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period, a long way from recouping the film's estimated $295 million budget. In third, at $17 million, was the surprise hit "Sound of Freedom," a Christian action thriller from Santa Fe Films and Angel Studios. Jim Caviezel (who once played Jesus) stars in a story based on true-life former US government agent Tim Ballard, who says he has rescued more than 100 children from Colombian sex traffickers. The film has found a niche audience among Christian conservatives. Critics, however, say "Sound" plays into wild QAnon conspiracy theories about a dark international cabal kidnapping children and harvesting their blood. While Angel Studios denies that its film warps the truth, Caviezel and Ballard have both embraced some extreme QAnon claims. In the fourth spot was Disney/Pixar's family-friendly animation "Elemental," at $9.6 million. The cross-cultural rom-com (can fire and water ever find happiness?) has done well since a "disastrous opening," according to Variety. And in the fifth was "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the second installment in Sony's animated take on the web-slinging superhero. It took in $8 million. Rounding out the top 10 were: "Joy Ride" ($5.9 million) "No Hard Felings" ($5.3 million) "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" ($5 million) "The Little Mermaid" ($3.5 million) "Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken" ($2.8 million) The post ‘Insidious’ whips past ‘Indy 5’ to top N.America box office appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
