Bong Go joins Asian Games send-off; renews advocacy for athletes’ welfare
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go recognized athletes, coaches, and sports officials for their contributions to Philippine sports and their crucial roles in representing the nation on the international stage, during the send-off ceremony on Monday, 18 September, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City, for Filipino participants in the 19th Asian Games and 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. “Today, we gather here not only to celebrate the excellence of our athletes but also to bid them the best of luck as they embark on a journey to represent our great nation at the 19th Asian Games and 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China," said Go. Go took the opportunity to shed light on his proposed Senate Bill No. 2116, which aims to amend Republic Act No. 10699, also known as the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act. "This bill which I authored carries the potential to bring about positive change in the lives of our athletes, particularly our para-athletes," he said. Go emphasized the need to increase the incentives for para-athletes, stating, "Sana po’y ma-increase naman rin po ang kanilang incentives na natatanggap dahil ‘yung honor po na dala nila sa ating bayan, pareho naman po ‘yong gold, silver, bronze at pinaghirapan rin po nila." The proposed measures seek to upgrade the incentives for para-athletes. This bill intends to provide equal opportunities and recognition to all athletes, thereby promoting inclusivity and diversity in sports. "The heart of this legislation is inclusivity and equality. It aims to elevate or increase the incentives for our para-athletes," he mentioned. Go, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance said he continues to advocate for additional budget for sports programs under the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). "During the budget deliberation last year, ang ipinasa po na budget ng PSC more or less about P200 million. Ako po mismo sa Senado bilang inyong chairman po ng Committee on Sports and as vice chair ng Committee on Finance, isinulong ko talaga na madagdagan po ng P1 billion po ang pondo ng Philippine Sports Commission," he said. He revealed that during the budget deliberations last year, he sponsored and successfully secured financial support for athletes participating in international competitions such as the 2023 Southeast Asian Games, which took place in Cambodia, and the forthcoming Asian Games in China. He also disclosed the allocation of P50 million through the PSC for the Asian Games, along with P30 million specifically for Asian para-games. Go also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in achieving sports excellence. "’Pag nagsama ang gobyerno at pribadong sektor, walang imposible.” Meanwhile, in his speech, the senator also touched on the state of sports facilities in the country, emphasizing the need for comfortable training grounds for athletes. "Ako, sa abot ng aking makakaya ay tutulong po ako sa ating mga sports program ng ating bansa," he assured. In line with his focus on grassroots sports development, Go also spoke about the National Academy of Sports (NAS), a fully operational institution located in New Clark City in Tarlac. "Ngayon po pwede na pong mag-aral at the same time mag-training, training at the same time mag-aral diyan po sa National Academy of Sports," he said. This initiative aims to ensure that athletes do not have to sacrifice their education for their sports careers. Former president Rodrigo Duterte signed RA 11470 in June 2020, which provides for the establishment of the NAS System and its main campus. Go was an author and co-sponsor of the measure. Go is also prioritizing the institutionalization of the Philippine National Games (PNG) as a platform to scout and recruit athletes for the national pool. He filed SBN 423, or the proposed PNG Act, which seeks to create a nationwide platform for athletes, particularly the youth, to display their abilities. During the ambush interview, Go also emphasized the importance of grassroots programs in encouraging youth to engage in sports and lead a healthy lifestyle. "Grassroots program, it's one way na ma-e-engganyo natin ang ating mga kabataan to get into sports, stay away from drugs, and to keep us healthy and fit," he said. He further elaborated on the connection between sports and health, saying, "Malaking bagay na fit tayo. Ang importante rin sa akin bilang chairman ng Senate Committee on Health, dalawa po 'yan. Importante sa akin ang sports at health. Magka-connect ang dalawang ito dahil para sa akin, kapag fit ka, healthy ka. Pangalagaan po natin ang kalusugan ng bawat isa. Katumbas ng kalusugan ay buhay ng bawat Pilipino." Toward the end of his speech, Go expressed his gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his unwavering support for Filipino athletes. "Salamat po mga athletes. And of course, gusto ko rin pong pasalamatan ang suporta po sa atin ng ating mahal na Pangulong Bongbong Marcos sa suporta niya sa SEA Games, sa Asian Games, at sa lahat pa po ng future competition," he said. Go likewise extended his thanks to PSC Chairman Dickie Bachmann, Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham Tolentino, and the Philippine Paralympic Committee President Michael Barredo for their ongoing support and contribution to the athletic community. He likewise thanked the athletes, para-athletes, and coaches for their dedication and sacrifices in training. "Athletes, para-athletes, coaches salamat po sa inyong lahat, sa inyong sakripisyo sa pagte-training. Alam kong ito na po ‘yung panahon na inaantay natin," Go said. As the athletes prepare for their journey to Hangzhou, China, Go assured them of his full support. "To our athletes, I know that we stand with you every step of the way. We believe in your potential, and we are confident that you will make our country proud on the international stage," he concluded. The upcoming Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8. The event was originally scheduled for 2022 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bong Go urges more sports funding for grassroots dev’t, facilities, and athletes
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, underscored during a budget hearing on Tuesday, 12 September, the critical role of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in promoting sports as a key factor in national development. He emphasized the necessity of adequate funding for both grassroots sports development and the country's participation in international competitions. Go, in his opening statement, expressed his strong belief that sports can serve as a deterrent for the youth against engaging in illegal drugs and other harmful activities. He also mentioned that sports can be a way to continue the campaign against illegal drugs initiated by former president Rodrigo Duterte. “Sabi ko nga, get into sports, stay away from illegal drugs to keep us healthy and fit. At isa rin po ito sa paraan na ilayo natin ang mga kabataan sa iligal na droga. Isang paraan ito na maipagpatuloy ang kampanya ni dating pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na labanan ang iligal na droga dahil kapag bumalik po ang iligal na droga, babalik po ang kriminalidad, babalik po ang korapsyon sa gobyerno,” Go said. The senator also highlighted the recent achievements of the Philippines in the international sports community, including the successful hosting of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He praised the event organizers and shared his experience participating in a dry-run before the opening, emphasizing that "’pag nandyan po ang disiplina, kaya natin, gugustuhin natin na maging well-organized po tayo." Go likewise underscored the international attention that the Philippines has garnered through its successful hosting of sports events, particularly the FIBA World Cup. "Malaking tulong po iyon sa pag-promote po ng kagandahan ng ating bansa. For 17 days, nakatutok po sa ating bayan ang buong mundo dahil napakaganda po ng ating bansa," he said. The senator then expressed his pride in Gilas Pilipinas for earning a spot in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. "Alam ko po na ibinigay ninyo ang lahat, ginawa ninyo po ang lahat para lumaban. Puso po ang ginamit ninyo at 'never say die' ang attitude ng ating Gilas Pilipinas," he said. Go also took the opportunity to commend the country’s performance in the Southeast Asian Games. He then extended his well wishes for the upcoming Asian Games scheduled from 25 September to 8 October. However, the senator also hinted at areas for improvement, suggesting that while the country has had successes, there is still work to be done. "Though mayroon mang dapat ayusin, may panahon pa kayong ayusin ang mga ito," Go added while stressing the importance of supporting both grassroots and elite sports development. "For this year’s budget, with the support of our Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Senator Sonny Angara, we allocated funding for PSC’s grassroots program and the preparation, training, and participation of our national athletes in international sports competitions," he revealed. The PSC proposed a budget of P3.3 billion for 2024, but the DBM only approved P210 million. This is a reduction of more than 93 percent from the agency’s proposal. Go also touched on the need for proper training facilities for athletes. He mentioned the need for repairs at the Philippine Institute of Sports Multi-Purpose Arena (PhilSports Arena) and comfortable barracks for athletes. Go noticed that the facilities that were presented during the hearing are in bad condition and that they really need to be improved. He urged the government to allocate funds for the construction of comfortable housing for the athletes, instead of spending on flood control projects in areas where there are no people. “Napapansin ko ang mga pasilidad na pinakita kanina. Talagang kailangan po, the more we should invest sa mga sports facilities natin na sira,” he added. “Bigyan naman natin ng maayos at komportable na tirahan ang ating mga atleta. Nananawagan ako sa DPWH, instead of flood control projects sa mga lugar na walang tao, dito na lang sa ating mga atleta na kailangan nila ng komportableng tirahan man lang. Baka pwede ninyo mapaglaanan ng pondo,” said Go. Meanwhile, he also discussed the National Academy of Sports (NAS) at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, established under Republic Act No. 11470 that he authored and co-sponsored, which allows students to train while getting quality secondary education. The law provided for the establishment of the NAS System and Main Campus. The NAS also offers a secondary education program with an integrated special curriculum on sports which was developed in close coordination with PSC and the Department of Education. “Pwede silang mag-training, at the same time, mag-aral. Pwede silang mag-aral, at the same time, mag-training. Wala pong masasakripisyo. 'Yan po ang National Academy of Sports, batas na po at may sariling pasilidad,” he said. The senator then called on the PSC to maximize the facilities at New Clark City, initially used for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. He also reiterated his support for the establishment of the Philippine Sports Training Center and asked for updates on its status. Go urged his colleagues to fight for a sufficient budget for PSC’s programs to ensure continuous sports development in the country. “Kaya naman po hinihimok ko ang ating mga kasamahan na suportahan ang budget ng Philippine Sports Commission at GAB para tuluy-tuloy lang po ang sports development sa ating bansa,” concluded Go. New PNR norm: Electric trains
When the Philippine National Railways resumes operations after a five-year hibernation, Filipinos will discover an entirely modern railway that will use an all-electric system. By that time, the diesel-powered engines would all be relegated to the train museum. In his speech before the Transport Logistics Forum held at the World Trade Center on 17 August, PNR Chairman Michael Ted Macapagal said the agency is hard at work to complete the North-South Commuter Railway or NSCR, which will run from Clark Air Base in Pampanga to Calamba City in Laguna, a distance of 147 kilometers, for P873.62 billion. The forum was sponsored by the Italian, German, French, and Spanish Chambers of Commerce. Macapagal said that once the project is completed, five years hence, all trains running on diesel fuel will be replaced with a fleet of 60 electric multiple units, “which are at par with world standards in terms of safety and comfort.” Macapagal said PNR is thus rebuilding the country’s railway system from the ground up. “The NSCR is long overdue, while other countries transport people and goods by train, the Philippines depends on cars and trucks to achieve that purpose, which is why we have these daily traffic snarl-ups that cost us, according to studies, the equivalent of $25 billion a year,” according to the PNR chief. The refurbished rail line will be able to transport 800,000 passengers every day. Travel time from one end of the line to the other will be cut in half, from eight to four hours. He said the trip will be even shorter for express train passengers. The PNR is undergoing reconstruction after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said his administration will give priority to the development of more efficient railways for public transport. The NSCR is only the start, revealed Macapagal. “Having set the project in motion, President Marcos now wants to begin construction of the North Long Haul, the South Long Haul, the Panay Railway, North Mindanao Railway, and San Mateo Railway, all spanning a total of 1,024 kilometers,” he indicated. NSCR connects to Ilocandia Of the five projects, the North Long Haul is the most ambitious. It will connect NSCR to the Poro Point Free Port Zone, Laoag International Airport in Ilocos Norte, and Port Irene and Lal-lo International Airport in Cagayan. The chairman said President Marcos regards the railway projects as the country’s framework for economic development. To give way to the construction project, PNR has stopped train operations from Alabang to Laguna. It is set to suspend all operations in Metro Manila also. “That’s why the LTFRB, prodded by PNR, is expeditiously approving franchise applications for additional buses in affected areas,” Macapagal related. As PNR chairman, Macapagal identifies priority projects with the help of the board, which falls under the authority of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista. “If we are a basketball team,” Macapagal said in his address, “Secretary Bautista is the MVP. Of course, President Marcos is the head coach. I’d like to think I am the point guard.” The PNR station in Ligao City, Albay recently reopened after six years of hiatus. Every day, the first PNR trip from Ligao to Naga leaves at 5:30 a.m. and is followed by a second trip at 5:30 p.m. from Naga to Ligao. The cheapest fare is P15 for the first station and goes up to P105 for the entire stretch of the train system. The post New PNR norm: Electric trains appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
PAL first-half gains bankroll fleet boost
Flag carrier Philippine Airlines or PAL reported on Friday that its net income during the first half of the year more than tripled to P13.6 billion from last year’s P4.1 billion. In a stock exchange disclosure, the company said its operating income during the period also swelled to P17.4 billion from P6.6 billion recorded a year ago. Notably, the airline’s stellar growth was driven by an 89-percent increase in the number of passengers it flew during the period, which reached 7 million as of end-June. Likewise, it logged over 50,400 operated flights, translating to a 56-percent growth from last year’s numbers. This, according to PAL, led to an 81.6-percent improvement in the average passenger load factor. Given this trend, PAL said its passenger revenues climbed to P78.2 billion from P33.1 billion last year. However, its cargo revenue dropped by 54 percent to last year due to fewer cargo charter flights to give way to more passenger flights amid a demand surge. To sustain the growth momentum, PAL said it plans to invest P176.6 billion to acquire nine Airbus A350-1000 long-range jetliners to widen its fleet. Along with it, PAL will also increase its customer care and contact center agents by rolling out a new customer relations management system before the end of the year. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to invest in new aircraft, improved cabins, and enhanced travel experience for our valued customers,” PAL president and chief operating officer Capt. Stanley K. Ng said in the report. “The latest positive financial results enable us to build a better, stronger, and more agile Philippine Airlines that creates greater value for our customers, and we are grateful for their continuing support and patronage.” Within the first half, PAL restored flights to several routes in mainland China and launched nonstop services to Perth along with flights from Clark to Caticlan and Boracay. In addition to an extensive network of 32 domestic destinations served from Manila, Cebu, Clark and Davao, PAL operated the largest network of nonstop flights between the Philippines and North America, Japan, the Middle East and Australia. BPO group sets $59-B growth goal
The Contact Center Association of the Philippines, made up of more than 150 business process and outsourcing companies, has pegged its growth target for the industry to reach $59 billion by 2028, given the continuous development in the sector, particularly the enduring embrace of digitization. In a press conference on Tuesday at the Peninsula Manila, CCAP managing director Rosario Cajucom-Bradbury said of the revenue target of $59 billion by 2028 — about $49 billion of which is expected from CCAP-member companies. The sector has posted actual revenue of $27 billion in 2022, which accounts for 84 percent of the total revenue of the IT-BPM industry ($32 billion). The aggressive target is part of the 2028 IT-BPM Roadmap, which was launched in the third quarter of 2022, coinciding with the start of the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. It also sets a target of 2.5 million full-time employees (2.3 million to be accounted for by CCAP-member firms) and a 40 percent countryside expansion. The aggressive target is part of the 2028 IT-BPM Roadmap, which was launched in the third quarter of 2022, coinciding with the start of the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. In 2022, the contact center sector employed 1.4 million individuals, which is 87 percent of the 1.6 million total employment of the local IT-BPM industry. Also, she shared that their group is working hand-in-hand with the government, particularly the Department of Information and Communications Technology to transform the countryside into a BPO industry ready. The CCAP and DICT consider Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Metro Clark, Bacolod City, Davao City and Iloilo City as BPO centers of excellence, while the Cities of Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Dumaguete, Dasmariñas in Cavite, Lipa in Batangas, Naga and Sta Rosa in Laguna as next wave cities. P51-B airport railway launched
Project to generate 38,000 jobs The country’s first airport railway express service soon starts construction after the government and proponents signed the P50.8-billion contract packages for PNR Clark Phase 2 (Malolos-Clark) segment of the P777.5-billion North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) virtually over the weekend (August 1, 2020). The construction is expected to generate 38,000 new local jobs in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade led the virtual signing of the contracts, marking the start of civil works for the 53-km extension that will bring passengers from Makati City in Metro Manila to Clark International Airport in Pampanga in just under one hour. The first signing was for the P32.7-billion Contract Package N-04, which covers the civil engineering and building works 6.3 kilometers of the main line and 1.6 kilometers of the depot’s access line with an underground station serving Clark International Airport. They also signed the P18.1-billion Contract Package N-05, which covers the civil engineering and building works for the Clark Railway Depot. The depot covers an overall area of approximately 33 hectares. The contract covers the construction of the Operations Control Center, stabling yard, workshops, training center and other ancillary buildings in Mabalacat, Pampanga. This proves that flagship projects under the government’s BUILD, BUILD, BUILD program continue despite challenges posed by the pandemic, Tugade underscored. The PNR Clark Phase 2 paves the way for the country’s first-ever airport railway express service, he reiterated. “Since the NSCR will feature the country’s first airport express train service allowing travelers to get from Makati to Clark Airport in under one hour, we can consider it as a trail-blazing project, ” the DOTr Secretary elaborated. “To achieve this, trains will run at 160 kilometers per hour, making it one of the fastest modes of land public transportation.” The signing of contracts is likewise timely, noted Asian Development Bank (ADB) Southeast Asia Director General Ramesh Subramaniam. “The civil works contracts will help kickstart the economic revival of the Philippines over the next 12 months as the country faces the pandemic ” he pointed out. Under the railway project, we estimate that 24,000 local construction jobs will be directly created during the next three years. And another at least 14,000 jobs needed for operating the railway system,” according to Subramaniam. The signing of contracts is a major milestone for the Malolos-Clark Railway Project as well as for the Philippine transport sector, he added. Once partially operational by 2022, PNR Clark Phase 2 (Malolos-Clark), a 53-km rail line segment, will connect Malolos, Bulacan to Clark International Airport, will cut down travel time to 30-35 minutes, from the original 1 hour and 30 minutes. The DOTr signed contract Package N-04 was virtually signed with Acciona Construction Philippines, through Director Ruben Eugenio Garcia and Chief Financial Officer Angel Fernandez de la Pradilla, and EEI Corporation, through President and CEO Roberto Jose Castillo. Contract Package N-05 was virtually signed with POSCO Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd., through Executive Vice President Dong Ho Kim and POSCO E&C Vice President Sung Wook Chung......»»
SM Prime income halved in H1 due to impact of pandemic
SM Prime Holdings Inc., one of the leading integrated property developers in Southeast Asia, posted a 46 percent drop in consolidated net income to P10.4 billion in the first half of 2020 from P19.3 billion in the same period last year. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, SM Prime said its consolidated revenue for the first six months of 2020 registered a 23 percent decline to P43.7 billion from P57.0 billion in the first six months of 2019. SM Prime said it continues to innovate and strategize to recover from the unprecedented effects of the pandemic brought about by Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) including continuous support in the operations of tenants as well as assistance to various stakeholders across the country. “The first half of 2020 has been one of the most challenging periods we’ve faced as a company. With the government maintaining the implementation of quarantine protocols in most key areas in the Philippines where our businesses are, SM Prime is committed to sustaining its operations while adhering to the strict safety measures implemented by the government and continue providing convenience to our customers,” said SM Prime President Jeffrey C. Lim. SM Prime’s Philippine malls’ rent income dropped by 44 percent to P13.1 billion in the first half of 2020 from last year’s P23.3 billion on the back of lower mall revenue of P14.4 billion, 49 percent lower from P28.1 billion of the same period last year. This is driven primarily by waived rent and rental discounts granted to tenants since the start of the quarantine measures in March, which amounted to P11 billion as of end of June. SM Prime’s residential business, led by SM Development Corporation (SMDC), recorded P23.7 billion revenue in the first half of 2020, 11 percent higher from P21.4 billion in the same period last year. This accounts for 54 percent of the consolidated revenue of the Company. SMDC generated P42.4 billion reservation sales in the first six months of 2020, amidst the quarantine measures. SM Prime’s commercial properties business’ revenue has grown 16 percent to P2.5 billion in the first half of 2020. Operating income registered at PHP2.2 billion, 22 percent higher than P1.8 billion during the first half of the previous year. The offices business of SM Prime has business process outsourcing (BPO) offices as primary tenants, which were allowed by the Philippine’s Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to continue its operations throughout the quarantine period. The hotels and convention centers business segment contributed P1 billion to consolidated revenues in the first half of 2020 despite limited operations. Conrad Manila, Park Inn Clark, Park Inn North EDSA and Park Inn Iloilo remained operational to cater to BPO employees and returning overseas Filipino workers/seafarers. The Company’s biggest events center, the Mall of Asia Arena, on the other hand, was converted into Mega Swabbing Facility in partnership with various government agencies to help front- liners as well as returning overseas workers. “The Company is doing its part to help the country to contain the spread of the virus. For our employees and agency workers, we have conducted antibody rapid testing and RT- PCR testing during the start of GCQ in the country to assure the safety and uninterrupted delivery of services to customers and to protect its workforce,”Lim added......»»
