Morissette learns from her mistakes

On the local music scene, Morissette Amon is one of the very few singers who can access the whistle register and incorporate its use into her singing. It's a high-risk, high-reward feat---done correctly, this airy and piercingly high vocal embellishment is an instant showstopper; flub it and you have the makings of a viral online video.   But despite the volatile nature of whistle notes, Morissette still chooses to do them live onstage, even if it meant missing it once in a while. "Anything can happen during a performance, and not everything will ever be perfect," she said at a press conference for "A Lani Morissette Musical Journey," her upcoming concert with Lani Misaluc...Keep on reading: Morissette learns from her mistakes.....»»

PH concert finds musical bliss from Sam Smith’s romantic woes

Heartache and anguish; loneliness and longing; ruminations over love lost---these are some of the things Sam Smith had written about in the past and delved into for his second album, "The Thrill of It All." By the British crooner's own admission, his music, at times, can get "a little bit depressing."   Earlier this month, Sam brought his ongoing world tour of the same title to SM Mall of Asia Arena. And while the night's set did hew closely to such themes, never for a minute did the show feel bleak or overwrought.   Onstage, he delivered his songs---not as someone still inhabiting a space of sadness and self-pity---but as someone who can now look back...Keep on reading: PH concert finds musical bliss from Sam Smith’s romantic woes.....»»

ABBA music is ‘complex, ahead of its time’

Mamma Mia!," the successful, long-running jukebox musical built on the discography of Swedish pop superstar quartet ABBA, is on its final weekend at The Theatre at Solaire. This is the second time the show has been staged in Manila. The maiden production in 2012 was held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It will celebrate its milestone 20th anniversary in 2019. With about 60 million worldwide audiences as of early this year, productions mounted in 16 languages and international performances in cruise ships that tour the Caribbean, "Mamma Mia!" continues to tease the senses with, for instance, the spandex-clad numbers, the "hot" Greek island setting, and the wonderfu...Keep on reading: ABBA music is ‘complex, ahead of its time’.....»»

Roberta Flack ready to sing again

NEW YORK --- Once a week, Roberta Flack gives a musical performance for an exclusive group. The lucky audience consists of a musical director, who works with the legend to keep her instrument --- her voice --- in top form. It would be an important exercise for any singer, but even more critical given that the 81-year-old singer had a stroke more than two years ago and suffered a collapse that led to a brief hospitalization earlier this year. "I know what it is to go over the same songs over and over again, and to try to make them perfect. It's interesting and it's hard and it's difficult at the same time," Flack said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press this week...Keep on reading: Roberta Flack ready to sing again.....»»

‘American Dreamers’ presents huge talents, ambitions — a review

John Daversa Big Band featuring DACA artists, "American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom" (BFM Jazz) As a certain recent Nobel laureate from Minnesota once said, we live in a political world. "American Dreamers" is a political album but also a collection of outstanding tracks that target both your senses and your conscience, presenting the musical talents of young people, often called "Dreamers", brought to the U.S. illegally as children and who now face an uncertain future as politicians are at a stalemate over their fate. The album includes testimonies from a handful of those young musicians --- Juan Carlos, an organist from Mexico; Saba, a pianist and singer from P...Keep on reading: ‘American Dreamers’ presents huge talents, ambitions — a review.....»»
