LIFE’S PASSING GRADE
As the sun slowly descends in the western sky, a man on the balcony of a Malate condominium is gazing at the undulating waters of Manila Bay as it mirrors the disappearing sun. While enjoying this scenic view, the man casts his eyes on the tinted window glass next to him and sees his “youthful” visage. Blessed with baby-faced features, round face and big doe eyes, he looks younger than 50. However, his silvery hair and crow’s feet tell a different story. The man suddenly wonders, “What does it feel like to be 75?” The awareness dawns that, at the age of 75, he will find himself at the twilight of his life, contemplating on the rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped his journey. As the question lingers in his mind, he finds solace in the belief that life, like the enduring waves of Manila Bay, will keep going, revealing its beauty in every rise and fall. [caption id="attachment_194598" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] The grade of 75 may not be a perfect score, yet it symbolizes the lessons learned along the way. | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF unsplash/ nguyen-dang-hoang-nhu[/caption] Make the grade Like everyone else, the man had his fair share of ups and downs, successes and failures. As he pondered through the chapters of his life, he couldn’t help but compare life to an exam, with 75 as the passing grade. Life threw questions at him — some easy, others hard and challenging. Some were like multiple-choice quizzes, offering options that seemed equally plausible. Others resembled open-ended questions, requiring thoughtful reflection. Yet, there were times when the questions could be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.” It was very rare for him to encounter a question without a clear right or wrong answer. Regardless of the nature of the exam, the man faced each one head-on. While he stumbled along the way, as any person might, he always got up, learning from each test. Wisdom and experience played a significant role in overcoming obstacles. The grade of 75 may not be a perfect score, yet it symbolizes the lessons learned along the way. In his moments of introspection, he sees 75 not merely a passing grade but a mark of resilience, reflecting the valuable insights he gained from life’s diverse questions. Each failure, each wrong answer, had been a lesson woven into the fabric of his being, contributing to the mosaic of experience that defined him. With three-quarters of a century’s worth of experience, the man, upon reaching the age of 75, plans to continue relishing life every day until the sun goes down on him. Shoot a 75 A typical 18-hole golf course usually has a total par of around 72. If a course has a par of 72 and a golfer takes 75 strokes to complete the course, the reported score is “three-over-par,” indicating that the golfer took three shots more than par to finish. Think of life like playing a round of golf. Reaching the age of 75 can be likened to completing an 18-hole golf course. In this analogy, the par 72 represents the average life expectancy. According to global data analyst, database.earth, the current average life expectancy for the Philippines in 2023 is 72.2951 years. If, at age 75, an individual encounters certain challenges or deviates from the conventional path, it can be compared to a golfer taking 75 strokes to finish a par 72 course. The reported score of “three-over-par” serves as a metaphor for the additional efforts or adjustments one might need to make in life at that age. The main difference, however, between life and golf lies in the fact that being “under par” is favorable in the sports, while being “over par” has a positive meaning in getting older. Near the twilight Sipping his coffee, the man now observes the sky shifting its colors from fiery orange to deep purple. While his outlook upon reaching 75 may appear positive, he wonders if he can still play golf or any of his favorite sports at that age. At 75, an individual is often considered to be in a phase of life where he encounters unique health challenges. This prompts contemplation about the quality of life, medical care and societal perspectives on aging. The post LIFE’S PASSING GRADE appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Fusing science and magic
If you’re like Vera Wang, and was “late” getting into the SPF game, today you may be seeing the “badges” of those carefree sunny days of worshipping the sun every time you look in the mirror. But while sunscreens and sun tints, even sun protection capsules, were not part of rituals you ever undertook for your skin, you can let the panic abate — there is hope! So I submitted to a skin analysis last year (screaming inwardly). I was in denial. I felt light years away from the creeping signs of age — fine lines, dark spots, saggy jawline. But the proof was there on the blinking screen. Yes, it screamed back at me, you should have used those sticky, smelly sun lotions your mother used to push into your hands. These days, lucky mortals have a wide range of choices for sunscreens that actually smell good and don’t leave your skin looking pasty white or coated in oily gunk. In fact, there are numerous solutions to almost every skin problem you can think of. [caption id="attachment_193222" align="aligncenter" width="525"] WEARING the Swarovski necklace from the latest collections. PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF SWAROVSKI[/caption] Acne is addressed by brands like, get this, Acnes, which makes zit-zapping quite a breeze; or even homegrown label Human Nature, which just came out with a Tea Tree Body Cleanser and Tea Tree Body Acne Gel for clearer skin all over. Wrinkles are battled by serums for every need, and if you have not much patience for regimens and rituals, a quick, non-invasive treatment at a reputable aesthetic center can have you feeling refreshed in no time. The era of lunchtime treatments has been food for the soul among a growing number of fans. [caption id="attachment_193225" align="aligncenter" width="525"] SWAROVSKI Afternoon Tea at Raffles Makati.[/caption] Here’s the latest in the arena of skin rejuvenation: Rejuran, a “new concept healer” made of polynucleotides, has arrived in the country courtesy of its exclusive distributor TritanMed. Polynucleotides are DNA fragments of specific size derived from wild salmon. This unique ingredient gives Rejuran its power to “make your skin young and healthy,” meaning “improved hydration, skin texture, skin elasticity and skin repair,” naturally. The injectable delivers the highly bio-compatible polynucleotides directly into the skin, and “activates the self-regenerative ability of the skin and improves the appearance of various skin concerns, such as wrinkles, scars, large pores, redness and pigmentation, etc.” [caption id="attachment_193226" align="aligncenter" width="525"] From the LUNA collection[/caption] It is, in short, the best and proven safest way to look 10 years younger, as testimonials online reveal. Other benefits of the treatment are: “promotes the secretion of collagen and restores Extra Cellular Matrix to recover thin and damaged skin inside caused by aging, while simultaneously improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles; improves pigmentation and overall brightness of the complexion, which is helpful in recovering the tonicity and luminosity of smoother skin texture.” Price-wise, it is said to cost less than the popular “lunchtime treatment” called fillers and delivers results just as quickly. Sometimes I think the multimillion-dollar world of beauty simply wants to inundate us with blurbs just so we will feel a raging need to get that glass skin, wing-tipped eyes and long, outrageous lashes. It’s a good thing science gives us an opportunity to have these “transformative” qualities, just like magic. The new pieces, coming in bright jewel tones of green, pink and blue, were designed by Swarovski Creative Director Giovanna Engelbert, who was inspired by “multiple worlds.” Also, science and magic met in this latest output, from “Idyllia’s secret gardens filled with wondrous creatures, or Luna’s star-covered skies illuminated by crescent moons.” See for yourself the exquisite Swarovski’s unmistakable “shapes of Dextera” and “the show-stopping cuts of Mesmera.” Luna is the newest collection to date, and for sun-worshippers, perhaps a little foray into the darker realms will balance it out, giving “mystical energy” amid too much reality. Raffles Makati’s executive chef Bela Rieck presented the afternoon tea, with delicacies like “green mango tart with sea grapes, seared tuna with mango cilantro salsa for the culinary art tier, and desserts like the crystal glazed reinvented raspberry, white wine coconut spritzer and a mesmerizing crystal-inspired praline.” The special afternoon tea is available until 30 November. Regional economies slowing down — WB
The World Bank expects East Asia and Pacific economies, excluding China, to grow by 4.6 percent this year as the Philippines catches up with digitalization. The WB prediction is slower than the previous 4.9 percent estimate announced by the multinational financial institution in April. If China is included, economic growth in the region is projected to settle at five percent, the World Bank’s report from Washington said last Sunday. “This is higher than average growth projected for all other emerging market and developing economies but lower than previously projected,” the World Bank said. “The East Asia and Pacific region remains one of the fastest growing and most dynamic regions in the world, even if growth is moderating,” World Bank East Asia and Pacific vice president Manuela Ferro said. The multinational financial institution said the region might continue to face challenges in supplies of goods as more typhoons hit the region in the fourth quarter this year and climate change persists. Geopolitical tensions The World Bank added geopolitical tensions aside from the Russia-Ukraine war threatens to further hamper trade. China, the world’s second largest economy, and the US have been exchanging export bans, especially on electronic and technology products. Meanwhile, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian states are protesting against China’s aggression in the West Philippine Sea. For these reasons, the World Bank said prices of goods and services might rise, forcing central banks in the region’s developing countries to raise interest rates to prevent inflation from accelerating further. However, this means consumers might cut back spending on certain goods and services, while businesses slow operations. Borrowing costs to remain high “Therefore, borrowing costs will likely remain high, constraining room for spending and raising the risk of debt distress in some countries. Furthermore, high indebtedness, combined with rising costs of servicing debt, will weigh on private investments,” the World Bank said. For its 2024 forecast, the bank is more optimistic that the region’s economy excluding China’s will expand from 4.6 percent to 4.7 percent. “Growth in the rest of the region is expected to edge up, as recovery in global growth and easing of financial conditions offsets the impact of slowing growth in China and trade policy measures in other countries,” the World Bank said. Philippine economic growth is seen to improve to 5.9 percent next year from a 5.6 percent forecast for this year. Meanwhile, China’s economy could shrink by 4.4 percent next year from a 4.8 percent estimate for 2023 due to persisting elevated debt, tamer demand for real estate, and aging population. Sustaining high growth to require reforms “Over the medium term, sustaining high growth will require reforms to maintain industrial competitiveness, diversify trading partners, and unleash the productivity-enhancing and job-creating potential of the services sector,” Ferro said. The World Bank reported digitalization and other reforms in government services in the Philippines increased productivity of firms by 1.5 percent from 2010 to 2019. Digital technologies, for example, can spread education and health services in the provinces to ensure a bigger pool of high-skilled and energetic workers. SBCorp. to lenders: Patience is a virtue
The president of Small Business Corporation, the lending arm of the Department of Trade and Industry, has advised entrepreneur lenders to understand the meticulous procedures of getting a loan from the government, as ushering financial help needs patience because it is not a joke to release funds for them. It is due to the fact that despite the available programs and funds from the government, micro, small and medium enterprises still resort to lending money from loan sharks, particularly those involved in the “5-6” scheme. “First, we need to tell our small businesses to have patience in applying for loans from the government, as some Filipino lenders are used to “instant notification”. Also, some of our lenders, particularly those that are already aging, are technologically challenged. They are easy to get tired of inputting information needed when the transaction is online,” SBCorp. president Robert Bastillo said during the DAILY TRIBUNE’s digital show Straight Talk. Meticulous procedures Bastillo explained that they need to onboard meticulous procedures and requirements because they are being supervised by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, just like banking institutions. “The process is actually short if loans are only petty. We can process the account as fast as one week. We are communicating with lenders through email which is why they must diligently check their emails. Also, another problem is that lenders have no clear signals and internet,” he said. He said interventions from the government are indeed needed, particularly the provision of good Internet connection, in order for these lenders, especially in the far-flung provinces, to have access to the government’s financial aid. Despite this, Bastillo said SBCorp. is continuously making some interventions to draw in more lenders to their programs, particularly those marginalized. “When we did rounds to the poorest municipalities, almost half of them had poor Internet connectivity, while 15 percent had no Internet connection at all. If they are having a hard time applying, the DTI has Negosyo Centers all over the country that can cater to their needs. DTI has Negosyo Centers in 1,300 municipalities,” he said. UniSQ in Toowoomba
Just recently, the 13th Australian Media Traditions Conference was held on the 20th and 21st of September at the University of Southern Queensland, or UniSQ, in the Garden City of Toowoomba in Brisbane on the theme “Beyond Boundaries.” Thirty-six paper presenters, who were largely PhDs and PhD candidates from various universities on the Australian continent and beyond, each had 20 minutes to share their research and scholarly works in the field of communication in the context of the digital age. Most conferees came from the universities of Southern Queensland, Queensland, Macquarie, La Trobe, RMIT, Monash, James Cook, Swinburne, Deakin, South Australia, Melbourne, Canberra and QUT — all in Australia — while two were from the University of China and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and one from the University of the Philippines (the only Filipino in the pack). Each day featured a keynote speaker, a morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Everyone received a ring-bound booklet that contained the individual abstracts and biographies of every participant. The various subthemes delved into — literature, journalism, television drama, civic engagement, music industry, radio, cinema, mobile developments, media/politics/issues, technologies and globalization, SVODs in Australia, creation and content production, and archives (i.e., collection of digital/social media at the National Library of Australia) — were all reflective of the contemporary communication and media ecosystem. For one, this author presented his paper titled, “Scoping the reformative and transformative impact of media traditions.” Let me share, dear readers, what my seminal and expository paper was all about. The terms reformative and transformative simply refer to access to news, entertainment, or information in various modalities, while impact, as a term, refers to “hit,” it denoting who are adversely affected in an era of digital media (i.e., print newspapers, periodicals, magazines and other forms of publishing). These social and economic dimensions are on opposite ends of a continuum. There’s no need to be an apologist for print newspapers since the notion that the “editor is dead” in this digital age is a myth. Neither is there such a thing as the “golden age of journalism,” as one presenter embraced the view — with some authority based on her research — that it never existed. In fact, if it were any consolation, there had been a common point when the portion who got its news via social media was about equal to the portion who got its news from newspapers and that was in 2017. Therefore, if there was a crucial paradigm shift to the digital or social media platform, it must have been an entirely slow and gradual process where the readership of print newspapers slid down and the readership on social media climbed, not to mention that such transformation was only of recent memory or origin. In the case of Americans, and it may be a universal phenomenon elsewhere in the world, television dominates as a news source followed by news websites, in turn followed by radio then social media, in turn followed by print newspapers — in this pecking order. As well articulated with evidence-based data, two age groups, namely, those between 50-54 and those 65 and over, still preferred print newspapers as their news source with lower percentages in the younger age groups (i.e., 18-29, 30-48). More particularly, while most Americans get their news often from social media rather than print newspapers, there is only a marginal variance of 20 percent and 16 percent, respectively, over the period 2016 to 2018. In other words, we can embrace the view that print newspapers “will never die,” very much so in countries with aging populations to the extent possible that it might even overcome social media at some point as a source for news in this…. “digital divide” as well as “age divide.” This media traditions conference at the UniSQ in Toowoomba was probably the most fulfilling intellectual experience for experts, scholars, and practitioners in the present-day communication and digital landscape. Private firms urged: Hire senior citizens
National Commission of Senior Citizens chairperson Atty. Franklin Quijano on Thursday is urging private companies to hire senior citizens as he welcomed the proposal made by ACT-CIS Partylist Representative Erwin Tulfo which will benefit senior citizens. In a statement, Quijano said that the lawmaker’s proposal would be a great way for senior citizens to transfer their skills, experiences and wisdom to the next generation. “We’re looking at more than just employment,” Quijano said. “We’re looking at how senior citizens can contribute to the country and help the next generation.” Quijano also said that the government should be flexible regarding working hours for senior citizens, as some may only want to work for a certain number of hours based on their preferences. “Flexibility is essential. Some food chains, like McDonald’s and KFC, offer 4-hour shifts, and senior citizens are happy with that arrangement. In fact, they tend to be more focused and committed to their work,” Quijano said. He also stressed that the government should recognize the experience of senior citizens and compensate them accordingly. “I hope that management, businesses, and even the government will recognize the experience of senior citizens based on their skills, craftsmanship, and expertise,” said Quijano. “I hope that senior citizens’ contributions will be appreciated and compensated accordingly.” In terms of the Philippine Action Plan for Senior Citizens, Quijano said that the NCSC will be launching the plan on 1 October 2023. The plan includes a number of initiatives designed to support senior citizens, including the development of age-friendly local governments, cities, municipalities, and communities. Quijano said that the objective of the guidelines for Philippine Age-Friendly Cities and Communities is to create a unique approach to aging that is based on Filipino values, such as caring and compassion. The Philippine government is encouraging private companies to hire senior citizens, National Commission of Senior Citizens Chairperson Attorney Franklin Quijano said on Thursday. The inanities and shenanigans of Vice Ganda
The mere mention of his showbiz moniker Vice Ganda immediately brings to mind this persona of a blabbermouth — a cross-dressing, larger-than-life gay man that is the creation of Jose Marie Viceral. As Vice Ganda, he has had his lion’s share of box-office hit movies and sold-out concerts, as well as becoming one of the pillars of the noontime program It’s Showtime and an inspiration to the descamisados, madlang pipol and maricons aspiring for and coveting what he possesses and represents. Vice is famous, affluent, social media and traditional media-savvy, with an Ion Perez as a lover that completes his fairy-tale existence. His sense of humor and the kind of comedy that his adoring public consumes polarize viewers. His movies are no way near the guffaw-inducing antics and commitment of a Roderick Paulate. The comedic elements are almost similar but not quite with the political incorrectness and craziness that are staples in the movies of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon. Definitely, the humor in Ganda’s offerings are not as funny and pale in comparison with the intelligently written sketches and characters of Michael V. The junk food masquerading as laugh-out-loud fare is inferior to the charisma, magic and legend of the one and only Philippine Comedy King Dolphy. It is a given that Vice Ganda is an easy target of the nakakainis na nagmamalinis demographics. Proof of this: An aging politician hogged the headline lately when he lambasted the comedian: “Sarili mo lang ang iniisip mo, akala mo maganda iyang ginagawa mo. Super bastos ka, bastos kang tao (You only think about yourself, you think what you are doing is good. You’re super rude, you’re a rude person).” This outburst and judgment from a political dinosaur is lamentable. But with this tirade, the stock value of the reigning fairy this side of Hollywood actually gets a reboot and a fresh dose of relevance. Prior to this high and mighty summation of who Ganda is and what he represents, public perception was ripe that the hold, popularity and reign of Vice was going downhill. Whatever he was holding on to was all confined, controlled and milked in the afternoon program and early primetime weekend singing competition that he hosted. When Vice became the replacement brand ambassador of an online shopping app, the decision puzzled some, given the lackluster sales of the makeup brand that Ganda carries. Add the fact that even during the height of Jose Marie’s reign and popularity, there were only a handful of brands that gave their trust to him. It has been so many days since the app’s sale date and still, there is no official statement on how massive the increase in purchases has been with Vice as the figure employed to seduce the public to spend their hard-earned pesos online. Likewise, the box-office powers and premium of Ganda are no longer stellar and superior. Well- chronicled and documented are his “may pera sa basura” kind of movies. But for two years now in succession, his movies have been clobbered by family dramas that put an exclamation point to his producers laughing their way to bank supremacy. Indeed, it was an astute decision not to participate in this year’s December festival, because his movie not grabbing the number one spot is almost inevitable, and it will be further proof of the old saying that bad luck comes in threes. But now, I cannot help but wonder: With a political dinosaur’s statements about his crudeness and salacious behavior, and a “criminal case” filed by a “kapisanan” latching on to the MTRCB brouhaha, will everything turn rosy and robust once more for the career and romance of the Unkabogable Vice Ganda? Time, being the best storyteller, will provide us the answer. The post The inanities and shenanigans of Vice Ganda appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Trump says his problem with Biden is competence, not age
Joe Biden, America's oldest president, received support from an unexpected ally over his age: Donald Trump said the Democrat was "not too old" to seek a second term, while quickly adding: "I think he's incompetent." The former president's comments, made in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" to be aired Sunday, come as America faces a profound debate over the aging of its political class, a major factor ahead of the 2024 elections -- when Biden will be just shy of 82 and Trump himself 78. Polls show that while the age gap between the two men is small, Americans worry more about Biden's age, with one survey finding that three in four people doubt his ability to last a second term. That Trump ended his own term in office as the second-oldest president ever (Ronald Reagan was 77 at the end of his term) presents the real estate magnate with a challenge, however, in repeatedly portraying Biden as too "sleepy" to do the job. But that hasn't stopped the Republican, who would be 82 at the end of a second term, from trying to thread that needle. "Some of the greatest world leaders have been in their 80s," he told NBC. "I'm not anywhere very near 80, by the way. "And Biden's not too old," Trump added. "But I think he's incompetent, and that's a bigger problem." Biden, who overcame a stuttering problem as a youth, has often been mocked for his verbal stumbles. But he remains trim, physically active, does not drink and is often seen riding his bicycle during weekends at his Delaware home. Democrats say he also fares well on the competency front, having overseen the passage of major legislation, including a massive infrastructure bill, the largest gun-safety bill in decades, and the Build Back Better social spending program. Biden has also been active on the global stage. Indeed, during his just-ended trip to Vietnam -- which analysts say was staged partly to highlight his vigor -- that country's 79-year-old Communist leader smilingly complimented Biden on his relative youth. Trump, for his part, has gotten mostly positive marks during annual physicals -- though he has been classed as overweight and does no exercise other than golf. Like Biden, he does not drink. Trump, too, has had his share of bizarre verbal moments, mangled pronunciations and physical stumbles. But in the NBC interview, he said his own age does not concern him, noting that his parents had long lives. "So genetically, that's a good thing." His insistence on his own competency was ridiculed during the 2020 presidential campaign when Trump said he had scored an "amazing" result on what he said was a test of mental acuity. He said he had to remember, in order, these words: "Person, woman, man, camera, TV." His proud and repeated recitation of those five words was ridiculed by political rivals and went viral on social media. Still, in an apparent reference to that test made in the NBC interview, Trump said, "I aced it. I got everything right." But that hasn't stopped the Republican, who would be 82 at the end of a second term, from trying to thread that needle. I got everything right." Japanese turn to wearable tech to beat the heat
Selling jackets with built-in fans, neck coolers and T-shirts that feel cold, Japanese firms are tapping into a growing market for products to help people handle the summer heat. Japan -- like other countries -- is seeing ever-hotter summers. This July was the warmest in 100 years, with at least 53 people dying of heatstroke and almost 50,000 needing emergency medical attention. Workman, which makes clothes for construction workers, launched a version of their fan-fitted jackets adapted for the high street in 2020 as demand grew. The mechanism is simple -- two electric, palm-sized fans powered by a rechargeable battery are fitted into the back of the jacket. They draw in air to then deliver a breeze -- at variable speeds -- onto the wearer's body. The jackets retail for 12,000 to 24,000 yen ($82-164). "As the weather gets hotter, people who have never worn fan-equipped clothing before want to find ways to cool down... so more people are interested in buying it," Workman spokesman Yuya Suzuki told AFP. "Just like you feel cool when you are at home with a fan, you feel cool just by wearing (the jacket) because the wind is blowing through your body all the time," he said. Aging population at risk Japanese summers are known to be hot and humid, but this July Tokyo really sweated. The average temperature was 28.7 Celsius (83.7 Fahrenheit), the highest on record since 1875. Heatstroke is particularly deadly in Japan, which has the second-oldest population in the world after Monaco. More than 80 percent of heat-related deaths in the past five years have been among senior citizens. "Some people die from heatstroke," said Nozomi Takai of MI Creations, a company selling neck-cooling tubes mainly to factory and warehouse workers. "Individuals as well as companies are putting more and more effort into measures against it every year," Takai said. The gel inside his firm's brightly colored tubes -- priced at 2,500 yen -- is cool enough to use after 20 minutes in the fridge. Wearing it on the neck will "considerably cool the whole body" for about an hour, she said. Takai's company joined an expo this year on "measures against extreme heat" in Tokyo to showcase new products that help users stay cool in the scorching heat. At another booth, Tokyo-based company Liberta had a series of clothing including T-shirts and arm sleeves using prints that make users feel cool -- especially when they sweat. The prints use materials such as xylitol that feel cool when reacting with water and sweat, they said. Chikuma, an Osaka-based company, has even created office jackets and dresses equipped with electric fans. "We developed them with the idea that it could be proposed in places where casual wear is not allowed," Yosuke Yamanaka of Chikuma said. Regular fan-fitted clothes can make the wearer look puffy, as they need to be zipped up, and cuffs are tight. But jackets developed jointly by Chikuma, power tool maker Makita and textile giant Teijin do not need to be buttoned up, thanks to a special structure that sandwiches the fans in two layers and keeps the cool air in, Yamanaka said. Men adopting parasols Parasols, which are commonly associated in Japan with skin-tone-conscious women protecting against a summer tan, are now proving more popular with men too. Komiyama Shoten, a small, luxury umbrella maker in Tokyo, began making parasols for men around 2019 after the environment ministry encouraged people to use them. Before, many male customers thought parasols "were for women and they were embarrassed", the owner Hiroyuki Komiya said. "Once you use it, you can't let go," he added. On the busy streets of popular tourist destination Asakusa, Kiyoshi Miya, 42, said he decided to "use his umbrella as a parasol". "It's like I'm always in the shade and the wind feels cool," he said. Another visitor, Shoma Kawashima, wore a wearable fan around his neck to stay cool under the blazing sun. "It's so hot I want to be naked," the 21-year-old said. Gadgets are helpful, but "not a solution" to rising temperatures, he added. The post Japanese turn to wearable tech to beat the heat appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

BRP Sierra Madre: A rusting hope beacon
Don’t look now, but a piece of junk rusting away in the middle of a contested shoal stands proud as a symbol of a nation’s resolute stand to assert its territorial rights. Yes, whether we like it or not, the BRP Sierra Madre, deliberately grounded there in 1999, carries a profound significance for the Philippines in its quest to keep its sovereignty in the face of an ambitious challenge from an aggressive neighbor in the West Philippine Sea. Fighting boredom just to keep the country’s presence at the shoal — that is also claimed by China by so-called historical right — are Filipino marines no more than a platoon strong who are keeping watch from the aging naval vessel converted into a makeshift military outpost. The West Philippine Sea is an area of immense strategic and economic importance to the Philippines. It encompasses a vast expanse of maritime territory rich in natural resources, vital to the nation’s growth and development. Amid the complex geopolitical dynamics that characterize this region, the BRP Sierra Madre has become a controversial structure atop Ayungin Shoal. The decommissioned former US Navy tank landing ship is proving to be a hindrance to Beijing’s efforts to annex the controversial sea feature also known as Second Thomas Shoal. Removing it by force would set in motion the Philippines’ Mutual Defense Treaty with the United States and we all know what that means. Why do you think China is so interested in occupying the shoal they named Ren’ai? The shoal is a pivotal feature within the West Philippine Sea. It is situated approximately 105 nautical miles from the coast of Palawan, well within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone as defined by international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The strategic importance of Ayungin Shoal cannot be overstated. It serves as a natural gateway to the broader Kalayaan Island Group, which includes several other reefs, atolls, and islands that are integral to the Philippines’ sovereignty and territorial integrity in the region. In this context, therefore, the BRP Sierra Madre plays a crucial role. The decision to deploy the BRP Sierra Madre to this location was a bold assertion of the Philippines’ territorial rights, serving as a physical manifestation of its sovereign claim in the face of aggressive territorial expansion by its neighbor. The symbolism of the BRP Sierra Madre extends beyond its physical presence. It embodies the spirit of Philippine resilience and the steadfast defense of its sovereign rights. Despite the vessel’s deteriorating condition due to the harsh marine environment, the Filipino soldiers stationed aboard continue to maintain their presence, demonstrating the Philippines’ commitment to safeguarding its interests in the West Philippine Sea. This dedication, often in challenging conditions, has drawn international attention to the Philippines’ determination to uphold the rule of law and protect its territorial integrity. The Philippines’ stance in the West Philippine Sea is not about asserting dominance over other nations, but rather about safeguarding its rightful interests in accordance with established international norms. UNCLOS, to which both the Philippines and China, among others, are parties, provides a clear framework for resolving maritime disputes. The Philippines has consistently advocated for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to conflicts in the West Philippine Sea, seeking to engage in dialogue and multilateral negotiations to find a resolution that respects the rights of all nations involved. The BRP Sierra Madre, as a symbol of Philippine sovereignty, also underscores the need for international support and solidarity. The Philippines does not stand alone in its effort to defend its sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea. It relies on the principles of international law and the support of its allies and partners. A peaceful and stable West Philippine Sea is in the interest of the international community, as it ensures freedom of navigation, promotes regional stability, and upholds the rules-based international order. The BRP Sierra Madre serves as a poignant reminder that sovereignty and territorial integrity are fundamental principles that every nation must uphold. It calls upon the international community to respect the legitimate claims of nations based on established rules and norms. The Philippines’ determination in maintaining its presence at Ayungin Shoal is not just about a piece of land or maritime territory. It is about defending the rule of law, promoting regional stability, and safeguarding the rights of nations, large and small. Tzu Chi gifts PDLs with restored vision
Forty aging persons deprived of liberty will see the world again in all its glory when they step out of prison as reformed members of society. This as an eye mission facilitated by the Tzu Chi Eye Center, the Bureau of Corrections and Daily Tribune yesterday in Sta. Mesa, Manila began helping PDLs with age-related vision issues, ranging from cataracts to glaucoma. Some of the detainees will get corrective glasses and eyedrops, while others will undergo surgery, said Tzu Chi medical director Dr. Bernardita Navarro. The non-government organization’s services are rendered at no cost to the beneficiaries. “We thank Tzu Chi Foundation a great deal for extending to our PDLs high-quality medical eye care we simply can’t afford,” said Bucor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. Since 2007, the Tzu Chi Eye Center has been conducting thousands of eye surgical missions that have benefited some 115,000 patients from underprivileged communities. Founded by Dharma Master Cheng Yen in 1966, the Tzu Chi Foundation has been at the forefront of community volunteerism, environmental protection, the promotion of human values, and the undertaking of charity, medical and educational missions. Catapang told the PDLs their cases will be reviewed and those who could be freed would be allowed to rejoin mainstream society. “Maybe this will help them to be good while inside, knowing that on this date they will be released to their families,” Catapang said. During the PDLs visit to the mission, Navarro joked that the BuCor chief’s family name may be “Catapang,” which means bravery, but his middle name should be “Mamon” for his having a heart that is soft like the popular Filipino bread. Biden calls China ‘ticking time bomb’ over economic woes
US President Joe Biden said Thursday that China's mounting economic problems make the country a "ticking time bomb." "China is a ticking time bomb in many cases," Biden said at a private fundraising event in the western state of Utah. The Democrat pointed to the country's high unemployment an aging workforce, saying "China is in trouble." "When bad folks have problems, they do bad things," he said. Biden offended Beijing in June by describing his counterpart Xi Jinping as a "dictator," in a comment slammed as a "provocation" by China's foreign ministry. Biden insisted Thursday that he was seeking "a rational relationship with China." "I don't want to hurt China, but I'm watching," he said. The United States recently relaunched its dialogue with China, with a succession of visits to Beijing by senior American officials, including chief diplomat Antony Blinken. The aim of Blinken's trip was to turn the page on recent tensions surrounding a Chinese balloon described as a "spy" operation that was shot down by the United States in February. Lady Gaga recalls ‘magical’ partnership with crooner Tony Bennett
Lady Gaga, who was Tony Bennett's friend and collaborator in the final years of the hitmaker's life, over the weekend hailed their "magical" relationship and urged others not to "discount your elders." Bennett died at 96 on July 21, having lived with Alzheimer's disease for years. In 2014 he became the oldest person ever to reach number one on the US album chart through a collection of duets with Lady Gaga, with whom he also won a Grammy in 2022 for their album of Cole Porter standards. "With Tony, I got to live my life in a time warp. Tony & I had this magical power. We transported ourselves to another era, modernized the music together, & gave it all new life as a singing duo," Gaga posted in a lengthy ode to Bennett on Instagram. "But it wasn't an act. Our relationship was very real. Sure he taught me about music, about showbiz life, but he also showed me how to keep my spirits high and my head screwed on straight." Among Bennett's many gifts was his stage presence: With a welcoming smile and dapper suit, he sang with gusto and a smooth vibrato in a strong, clearly enunciated voice. His death prompted an outpouring of gratitude for his life and work, with Elton John calling him "irreplaceable" and President Joe Biden saying "he himself was an American classic." Gaga's partnership with the legend was seemingly improbable -- she the boundary-pushing pop star and he the aging crooner -- but in her homage to Bennett she said "our age difference didn't matter." "We were from two different stages in life entirely -- inspired. Losing Tony to Alzheimer's has been painful but it was also really beautiful," she said. "An era of memory loss is such a sacred time in a person's life. There's such a feeling of vulnerability and a desire to preserve dignity." In her message Gaga urged people to keep their elders close: "Don't leave them behind when things change," she said. "And pay attention to silence -- some of my musical partner and I's most meaningful exchanges were with no melody at all." "I love you Tony." Momentary freeze sparks health concerns over US senator McConnell
Top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell sparked health concerns Wednesday when he appeared to physically seize up at a press conference in Congress. McConnell, 81, froze in mid-sentence and stood motionless at a microphone for about 20 seconds before aides and fellow senators walked him away. But the veteran Kentucky politician returned several minutes later and told reporters "I'm fine" before taking questions on various political issues. McConnell has been the top Republican in the US Senate since 2007, and wielded unflinching power as Senate majority leader from 2015 to 2021. In that role he stifled policies of the Democratic administration of president Barack Obama and bolstered Republican president Donald Trump when he took office in January 2017. He most notably helped engineer conservatives taking a majority on the Supreme Court by stalling a hearing for Obama's progressive appointed nominee in 2016. He also ensured that Trump was not convicted at trial after his unprecedented two impeachments, though he was critical of Trump's behavior. In March McConnell was hospitalized after he tripped and fell during a private dinner. He suffered a concussion and a fractured rib, and spent six weeks away from the Senate, undergoing physical therapy. The incident Wednesday highlighted the challenge of the aging leadership in the US Congress. Three other senators are older than McConnell, including Republican Chuck Grassley, 89, and Democrat Dianne Feinstein, who is 90. Another two-dozen senators are 70 or older. Age is also a central issue in the looming 2024 presidential battle: incumbent Joe Biden is 80 while Republican front-runner Donald Trump is 77. pmh/tjj © Agence France-Presse The post Momentary freeze sparks health concerns over US senator McConnell appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
