Drug suspect with 2,454 grams of shabu worth P16-M nabbed in Pasay
Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested a man with 2,454.85 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, valued at about P16 million, in Pasay City. The NBI identified the suspect as Raymond Darag Dulla, who, after his arrest last 14 September, was charged with illegal transport of prohibited drugs under Section 5 of Republic Act No. 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. The seized drugs were subjected to forensic examination which determined the drugs as shabu. Dulla was subjected to a drug test which found him positive for marijuana and shabu. It said that Dulla was arrested during an interdiction operation conducted by NBI National Capital Region (NBI-NCR) last 14 September along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City. Confiscated from Dulla were tape dispensers containing a white crystalline substance suspected to be shabu. The operation stemmed from information that on 14 September 2023, Dulla would be transporting shabu concealed in tape dispensers placed inside a brown box. “Additional information revealed that Subject will be renting a taxi that will traverse the service road near Kenny Roger’s along Roxas Boulevard and Heritage Hotel in Pasay City at around 8:00 in the evening.” Agents of NBI-NCR proceeded to the area where the taxi was supposed to pass, and after spotting the taxi boarded by Dulla, the agents discretely followed it. The NBI-NCR operatives flagged down the taxi but the taxi tried to accelerate but was eventually blocked by the vehicles of the operatives before it could escape. Thousands stuck in mud at Burning Man festival, one dead
Tens of thousands of festival-goers were stranded Sunday in deep mud in the Nevada desert after rain turned the annual Burning Man gathering into a quagmire, with police investigating one death. Video footage showed costume-wearing "burners" struggling across the wet gray-brown site, some using trash bags as makeshift boots, while many vehicles were stuck in the sludge. All events at the counterculture festival, which drew some 70,000 people, were canceled after rain tore down structures for dance parties, art installations and other entertainment. Police said they were probing one death, without giving further details. Road gates in and out of the Black Rock City venue were closed, but some desperate attendees trudged on foot for hours to reach the nearest road and hitch a lift out. "It was an incredibly harrowing 6 mile (10 kilometer) hike at midnight through heavy and slippery mud, but I got safely out," lawyer Neal Katyal said on social media. "It is very slippery and the mud is like cement and sticks to your boots. "No one should try this unless in good shape and part of a group. These are dangerous conditions to hike and will likely get worse." Festival crowds were asked to shelter in place and conserve food and water after the heavy rains started Friday night, with more downpours forecast on Sunday. "You can't really walk or drive," a young woman with dreadlocks named Christine Lee, a circus performer, said on TikTok. Internet service was not available or patchy, she said. "My boots are five inches, and the mud became five inches so I was kind of on stilts," Lee said, adding people were being told they may be stuck until Tuesday. "We have enough tuna for a week so we're OK." A video posted on social media showed comedian Chris Rock hitching a ride in the back of a pickup truck after managing to leave. Pershing County Sheriff’s Sargent Nathan Carmichael told CNN the conditions are difficult. The muck "seems to stick to people, stick to tires (and) makes it very, very difficult to move vehicles around," he said, adding that most RV motorhomes were stranded. Organizers urged festivalgoers to "conserve food, water and fuel, and shelter in a warm, safe space," saying the "playa" -- the huge open-air esplanade where the event unfolds -- was impassable. "Look out for your neighbors, introduce yourself," they added. The festival was scheduled to conclude on Monday. 'Survival guide' The organizers warned only some four-wheel drive vehicles with all-terrain tires were able to move. "Anything less than that will get stuck. It will hamper exodus if we have cars stuck on roads in our camping areas, or on the Gate Road out of the city," they said on a "2023 Wet Playa Survival Guide" special webpage. If necessary, they said it was possible to walk to the nearest road, where buses would be provided to take people to Reno. Mobile cellphone trailers were being deployed and the site's wireless internet was opened for public access. "We have done table-top drills for events like this. We are engaged full-time on all aspects of safety," organizers said. Last year, the festival contended with an intense heat wave and strong winds. Launched in 1986 in San Francisco, Burning Man aims to be an undefinable event, somewhere between a celebration of counterculture and a spiritual retreat. The festival -- for which tickets cost hundreds of dollars -- culminates each year with the ceremonial burning of a 40-foot (12-meter) effigy. It has been held since the 1990s in the Black Rock Desert, a protected area in northwest Nevada, which the organizers are committed to preserving. Do you need to take magnesium?
In my practice as a transplant nephrologist, many of my kidney transplant patients can have a deficiency in magnesium, due to medications that prevent their bodies from rejecting their new kidney. Magnesium is an important mineral in the body, helping with muscle, nerve and heart function, and in the production of energy. Magnesium also helps keep your bones strong and healthy. Having low levels of magnesium over a long period of time can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. [caption id="attachment_134198" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of pexels/ polina tankilevitch | SOY milk is a good source of magnesium.[/caption] Low levels usually don’t cause any symptoms, but if this persists, early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, cramps, seizures and abnormal heart rhythms can occur. Severe magnesium deficiency can lead to other mineral and electrolyte imbalances, such as low calcium and potassium levels. There some conditions that can also make patients prone to low magnesium levels. These include those with chronic diarrhea, prolonged use of proton pump inhibitors for heartburn (typically more than a year), heavy alcohol intake and diuretic use. Intake of certain medications for infections and cancer treatments can also cause magnesium levels to drop. [caption id="attachment_134196" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/chris vanhove | PUMPKIN seeds, which are high in magnesium, help lower blood pressure.[/caption] Before you reach for a magnesium supplement, you should know that if you have a balanced diet and are in generally good health, you likely do not have a deficiency in magnesium. You just have to take a few servings of magnesium-rich foods per day to get the amount you need. The Philippine recommended intake of magnesium for most adults is around 210 to milligrams per day. Good food sources are whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat pasta and oats. For vegetables, green leafy ones such as kale, spinach, okra and chard are some examples, providing around 80 milligrams of magnesium per half a cup serving. Fruits include bananas, grapefruit, and avocados. Other magnesium rich foods include chickpeas, white beans, kidney beans, lentils, mixed nuts and sesame seeds, about 35 milligrams for half a cup. Eating a medium-sized potato with the skin can provide around 40 milligrams of magnesium. [caption id="attachment_134197" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/leigh skomal | SPINACH is rich in magnesium.[/caption] In healthy persons it is difficult to get too much magnesium from food because the kidneys eliminate the excess in the urine. However, high doses of magnesium from dietary supplements can result in diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. Diarrhea is commonly reported with these forms of magnesium: magnesium carbonate, chloride, gluconate, and oxide. Magnesium supplements can also interact with other medications. If you take magnesium supplements take them at least two hours apart from other medications. Be careful when taking magnesium-containing laxatives and antacids. Very large doses of more than 5,000 milligrams/day of magnesium can cause magnesium toxicity and even death. Symptoms of magnesium toxicity can include nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing and an irregular heartbeat, and cardiac arrest. Patients with kidney problems or kidney failure are at high risk for this toxicity because their kidneys have lost the ability to get rid of the excess. When taken properly, supplements can help you stay healthy. But supplements taken unnecessarily or incorrectly can do more harm than good. If you suspect that you could have a low magnesium level, consult your doctor first. A simple lab test can check your levels, and your doctor can prescribe the amount that is right for you. Tatum comes through as Celtics hold off 76ers to level series
Jayson Tatum scored 16 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Boston Celtics held off the Philadelphia 76ers 95-86 on Thursday to force a decisive game seven in their NBA playoff series. The star Boston forward was enduring a dismal shooting night, making just one of 13 attempts from the floor through the first three quarters before erupting with four three-pointers in the final period as the Celtics thwarted Philadelphia's rally bid and leveled their Eastern Conference semifinal three games apiece. They'll host game seven on Sunday, trying to deny the Sixers a first trip to the conference finals since 2001. James Harden epitomized the 76ers' offensive struggles. He scored 13 points on four-of-13 shooting while newly minted NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid scored 26 points with 10 rebounds. Tatum, who averaged 30.1 points per game in the regular season, said he never lost confidence even as he struggled. "It's a long game," Tatum told broadcaster ESPN. "Thankfully I've got some great teammates that held it down." Marcus Smart led the Celtics with 22 points. Jaylen Brown added 17 and Malcolm Brogdon scored 16 off the bench. Even amid Tatum's troubles, the Celtics raced to a 15-3 lead, Smart and Brogdon carrying the early load before the Sixers began to find their feet. Philadelphia cut the deficit to three points before the Celtics pulled away again, pushing their advantage to 16 points twice in the second period. But the Sixers clawed back, taking advantage of 17 Celtics turnovers and finally taking the lead on two free throws from Harden that put them up 64-62 with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Philadelphia led 73-71 going into the final frame and was up by two when Tatum made his first three-pointer of the game to put Boston ahead. Tatum then drilled a step-back three-pointer over Tyrese Maxey. Another pair from beyond the arc pushed the Celtics' lead to 11 points with 37.6 seconds remaining. "All that mattered was we won this game," said Tatum, who also had seven rebounds, six assists, a steal, and two blocked shots. "It's game seven, it doesn't get any better than that." Later Thursday, the banged-up Phoenix Suns tried to fend off elimination when they hosted Western Conference top seeds Denver in game six of their series. Phoenix was again without veteran point guard Chris Paul, who missed games three four, and five after suffering a groin injury in game two. Center Deandre Ayton was ruled out with a rib injury that has reportedly affected his breathing while All-Star guard Devin Booker went into the contest nursing an ankle injury. The Nuggets, who routed the Suns on Tuesday to take a 3-2 lead in the series behind a 29-point triple-double from Nikola Jokic, listed ailing Jamal Murray as questionable. AFP: NPA under ‘crushing defeat’
The Armed Forces of the Philippines on Sunday stressed that the New People’s Army’s high-ranking cadre is a “crushing defeat” to the Communist Party of the Philippines as CPP-NPA victims have long been asking for justice over various atrocities and violence by the communist terrorist groups. To recall, the Philippine Army’s 303 Infantry Battalion on Saturday declared Rogelio Posadas alias “Putin” dead following a series of encounters in the boundaries of Isabela and Balbagan on 20 April. The security forces said Posadas was a “notorious leader” of the NPA’s Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, or the KR-NCBS. It said to be that Posadas was responsible for “assassinations, extortions, kidnappings, arsons and other forms of violence against innocent civilians and government personalities” in the the Visayas Region. The AFP is now urging CPP-NPA-NDFP remnants “to surrender and return to the folds of the law while there is still time.” Meanwhile, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict’s Legal Cooperation Cluster spokesperson, Prosecutor Flosemer Chris Gonzales, lambasted reports that Posadas was only working as an NDFP consultant, saying he was recorded as a criminal who is “responsible for several atrocities against the people of Negros Island.” Gonzales made this remark contrary to NDFP-Negros spokesperson Ka Bayani Obrero’s statement on Friday. Obrero called on the state forces to surface Posadas and his companion “Ka Mikmik” along with two motorcycle drivers who were rented to only transport them in Isabela, Negros Occidental. “We believe Posadas and the other three were intercepted by state agents along the road. They are missing since 19 April around 6 p.m. They never reached their destination,” Obrero said. “After experiences in the past wherein revolutionaries were captured and then declared casualties in fake encounters, we are very concerned for our comrades’ safety in the hands of fascist state forces,” he added. Gonzales underscored the country’s anti-terrorism council has declared the entire party of the CPP-NPA-NDFP as a terrorist organization.” “We reiterate that this government does not recognize the existence of the legitimacy of what the communist terrorist group labeled as NDFP Consultant,” Gonzales said. “In fact, the CPP-NDF-NPA has this standing propaganda policy and pattern to call their leaders NDFP Consultants, particularly if such leaders are arrested or are killed in engagements with state security forces,” he added. Gonzales stressed any CTG member should be called a revolutionary “but are common criminals responsible for the deaths of thousands and the destruction of billions in properties over the past 54 years.” The post AFP: NPA under ‘crushing defeat’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
