QC gov’t awards P5-M financial grants to StartUp QC finalists
In a bid to make the city an innovation hub, the Quezon City government awarded the five startup finalists under the first cohort of StartUp QC with financial grants amounting to P1 million each on Friday morning, 11 August, at the Luxent Hotel. Launched last October 2022, StartUp QC is a Quezon City government-led initiative to support existing early-stage startups through various training and mentoring sessions, industry exposure, and networking events. The finalists are Bamboo Impact Lab, a company that produces high-quality bamboo-derived products; EdukSine Production Corporation, an online platform that provides socially relevant Filipino independent films; ITOOH Homestyle, the first tech-enabled marketplace for quality-vetted home and office furniture largely crafted by local craftsmen. Also receiving grants are Indigo Artificial Intelligence Research Inc., a venture between engineers and professors that provide general-purpose AI capabilities such as multilingual AI engines that can understand local languages, dialects, and their colloquial variants; and Wika, which is an accessibility service provider that offers an array of tech-enabled solutions, such as the provision of sign language, captions, and audio descriptions for the deaf and visually impaired. Throughout the course of StartUp QC, these companies have received various business and technical training in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Quezon City University (QCU), Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU), Miriam College, Thames International, Technological Institute of the Philippines, the University of the Philippines-Diliman, and Launchgarage. Mayor Joy Belmonte stressed the significance of a city being both innovative and supportive of businesses, stating that local governments should create an inclusive environment that promotes growth and progress for all types of businesses. “It’s in the interest of all sectors to have a city where anyone would be confident to launch their businesses however novel their idea is. Such endeavors would eventually generate jobs, push the economy to its maximum potential, and help every citizen live the life they aspire to have,” Belmonte said. “The city, together with its partners, is ready to collaborate with these startups and introduce their ideas to the market. Their success will redound to the growth of the community and the city,” she added. Showing its commitment to supporting startups, the Quezon City government is inviting aspiring entrepreneurs to apply for the second round of the Startup QC Program. They are also encouraging talented students to take part in the Startup QC Student Business Plan Competition. Law graduates told: Inspire justice
Supreme court associate Justice Ramon Paul Hernando is urging the new law graduates of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law to “live justice, breathe justice, do justice and inspire justice, at all times.” Hernando — who was also the 2023 Bar Exams chairperson — was the guest speaker at the 77th Annual Commencement Exercises of the held at Areté Ateneo’s Hyundai Hall on 23 July 2023. The SC associate justice previously taught at the AdMU School of Law from 2015 until 2018, when he was appointed to the High Court. “Wholeheartedly push yourselves successfully through the Bar Examinations and prepare yourselves for what is inevitably ahead, which is your life role, as lawyers,” said Hernando to the graduates. “If someday, somehow, you get lost, confused, or tempted, please allow yourselves to be guided by your moral compass,” he added. Emphasizing that “lawyering is a profession of compassion,” Hernando told the graduates that when written law falls short of compassion, “you, as soon-to-be members of the Bar, shall fill that void in the law with overt acts of compassion, in whatever capacity that you will find yourselves in, whether in the public or private sector. After all, compassion establishes trust.” Hernando urged the Ateneo Law graduates to approach people “of different standings in life, grips on power, and levels of principle” without prejudice, stressing that they should strive to be lawyers of equity just as courts of law are also courts of equity. They were reminded to be lawyers with empathy and to put emotional quotient over intelligence quotient. “You may have a great level of legal knowledge, but without a greater level of emotional intelligence, you will never be able to forge that trust with the people that you will serve,” Hernando said. Furthermore, he urged them to not stop at the logical bounds of the statute, especially when the realities are obviously and unreasonably unfair. “Do not falter in choosing to do the right thing, even if you are alone in doing so. Remember that silence and inaction in the face of unfairness makes you complicit and accessory to such unfairness,” Hernando said.
