Cebu City eyes 100 electric vehicles
The local government of Cebu City is planning to acquire at least 100 electric vehicles that will ply major roads in the city by next year as it aims a greener and more sustainable land transportation system in Cebu City. North district City Councilor Joel Garganera, chairman of the committee on environment told DAILY TRIBUNE that the city expects to receive at least 10 e-vehicles from Global Electric Transport by the first quarter of 2024. “This could be the first large-scale electric vehicle deployment by a local government unit in the Philippines,” said Garganera, adding that the local government has allocated P150 million for the purchase of e-vehicles, while P50 million was pledged by businessman Endika Aboitiz and P100 million will come from the Aboitiz Foundation’s donation. About P300 million is needed to purchase 100 units of EVs. The unit cost per EV is pegged at P4.2 million but under the special agreement with GET, each unit can be purchased for only P3 million and the city will pay only P1.5 million for each unit as the remaining P1.5 million will be paid by the private sector. Garganera also disclosed that in the tripartite agreement between the City, GET and Aboitiz Foundation, it will be GET that will operate the e-vehicle units as well as provide the necessary maintenance at no cost to the city. He reiterated that green mobility aims to reduce a diverse set of environmental impacts primarily caused by the transport sector. “The goal is for the transport sector to decarbonize and decrease the current level of emissions to a low-carbon scenario,” Garganera said. Studies revealed that 50 to 70 percent of the air pollution in most cities is attributed to the carbon emissions from fuel-powered vehicles, noting that air pollution kills seven million people per year based on a GET report. In terms of maintenance, EVs have low-cost maintenance compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles since fewer materials are involved. PSAC paves way for agreement with DOH, CHED, and PHAPi with PBBM
The Private Sector Advisory Council from the Healthcare Sector (PSAC-Health), together with the Department of Health (DOH), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc. (PHAPi), signed a memorandum of agreement with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as a witness to facilitate employment for underboard BS Nursing students. During their degree, these students will become CHED-certified and work as Clinical Care Associates in healthcare industries. “The Clinical Care Associates Upskilling Program, formalized through the Joint Administrative Order [2023-0001], is a groundbreaking endeavor, and I am confident that it’s a program that will help address the lives of healthcare workers in the country today,” President Marcos said. PSAC-Health has worked with DOH, 55 private hospitals, seven public hospitals, and CHED, along with 19 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), to implement the Joint Administrative Order (JAO) in response to the country's critical shortage of qualified nurses. “To the underboard nurses out there who are contemplating what to do next: I call on you to apply for this program and embrace the support being wholeheartedly given to you by the government and the institutions we represent,” Marcos added. "The Commission commits to working with other government agencies and PSAC to implement all the strategic interventions that President Bongbong Marcos approved in a whole-of-government and whole-of-the-nation approach," said CHED Chairman Julian Prospero De Vera III. “I am confident that this policy would be extremely impactful as it addresses the problems and obstacles and allows our current registered nurses to focus more on high-value-added roles and functions,” said PSAC Healthcare Sector Lead Paolo Borromeo. On 19 July 2023, Chairman Prospero De Vera III of CHED and Secretary of Health Dr. Teodoro Herbosa ceremonially signed and launched JAO No. 2023-0001, also known as the "Implementing Guidelines for the Nurse Workforce Complementation and Upskilling Program for Clinical Care Associates (CCAs)." This landmark initiative results from a collaborative effort between the government and the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) Healthcare Sector Group. Implementing the JAO showcases the power of government and private sector collaboration. The PSAC-Health has played a vital role in shaping the Nurse Workforce Complementation and Upskilling Program, ensuring its alignment with the vision of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.'s administration. Leading hospitals and higher education institutions, including Healthway Medical Network (HMN), Metro Pacific Hospitals Inc. (MPHI), Mt. Grace Hospitals Inc., and the Philippine Private Hospitals Association Inc. (PPHAPI), have pledged their commitment to the Clinical Care Associates program by participating in the MOU signing event. Higher education institutions such as Our Lady of Fatima University, Far Eastern University, St. Paul University Philippines, Trinity University of Asia, National Teachers College, and National University are also pivotal partners in shaping the future of healthcare in the Philippines through this program. Aboitiz chief tracks techglomerate journey
Aboitiz Group president and CEO Sabin Aboitiz brought a wealth of knowledge and transformative leadership insights to the esteemed 21st Forbes Global CEO Conference in Singapore on 11 September. The conference, themed “Sea Change,” provided a platform for Aboitiz to share his vision and expertise as he spearheads the Aboitiz Group’s journey toward becoming the maiden techglomerate in the country. The Forbes Global CEO Conference is an annual gathering of influential leaders and visionaries who engage in insightful discussions and brainstorming sessions about the global economic landscape. Approximately 500 distinguished CEOs, thought leaders, entrepreneurs and investors attended this year’s conference to navigate the ever-evolving waves of economic transformation. Aboitiz, standing alongside notable leaders in Asia, participated in a thought-provoking panel entitled “Captains Courageous,” which explored the themes of courage and leadership. Distinguished peers His fellow panelists included Binod K. Chaudhary, chairman of CG Corp Global; Mike Federle, CEO of Forbes Media; Nuno Matos, CEO of Wealth and Personal Banking at HSBC; and Arsjad Rasjid, president director of Indika Energy and chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The panel conversation delved into the intricacies of courage and leadership, offering profound insights into the mindset of successful CEOs and the principles that have shaped their illustrious careers. Forbes assistant managing editor Diane Brady posed thought-provoking questions encouraging panelists to share their most courageous decisions, reflect on moments when their courage faltered, and acknowledge the influential leaders who have guided their paths. Drawing upon his extensive and exemplary leadership experience across various roles and companies within the Aboitiz Group, Aboitiz imparted invaluable wisdom on the concept of courage. He emphasized that courage takes on different meanings depending on individual circumstances and available options. “Courage means different things to different people depending on who they are or what situation they’re in,” Aboitiz stated. “Just like being generous means different things to different people. Courage is what you’re willing to give up, depending on the situation you’re in. If you’ve got lots of options, then frankly, you’re not that courageous. If you have no options, the more you have to lose, the more courageous you are,” he added. Following his engaging participation in the high-profile conference, Aboitiz was interviewed by CNBC Asia where he provided insights on how the Aboitiz Group is embarking on its Great Transformation journey. There was also huge interest in the recent partnership of Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners PLC to acquire Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines Inc. for $1.8 billion. It will be a joint venture where CCEP would be the majority owner at 60 percent while AEV will own 40 percent. This is in line with the direction to diversify a bit more into retail. “This goes back to our strategy to move a little out of one industry which is power and diversify a little bit into retail. Coca-Cola is the best brand in the world, so we thought that it would be the best way to move into the beverage and into more retail direction to be able to balance our portfolio,” Aboitiz explained. As the lead convenor of the Private Sector Advisory Council, Aboitiz also highlighted the importance of the private sector’s involvement especially in digitizing government services which President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. had been advocating. ERRAMON Aboitiz: Renaissance man
The Aboitiz family is a big player in Philippine business for over a century. With businesses covering a wide range of industries, including power, banking, food, and infrastructure, the clan’s Aboitiz Group has been creating jobs and opportunities for Filipinos. Founded by Paulino Aboitiz, son of a Spanish farmer who migrated to the Philippines in the late 1800s, Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc., or AEV, has grown from being an abaca-trading and general-merchandise business to a conglomerate with interests in power, banking, food, property, biofuel and construction. The group is undergoing its Great Transformation to establish itself as the Philippines’ pioneering techglomerate. This innovative growth strategy, powered by technology and a renewed entrepreneurial mindset, empowers the entire group to advance businesses and uplift communities. Among the driving forces propelling the Group’s business revolution is Erramon “Montxu” Aboitiz. Montxu previously served as the president and chief executive at Aboitiz Equity Ventures for 10 years from 2009 to 2019. He also briefly held the role of CEO at Aboitiz Power Corp. in 2018. Presently, he serves as a director at AEV and Endeavor Philippines and as chairman of the Board of Directors at Union Bank of the Philippines. Likewise, he serves as a board observer of the Aboitiz & Company. The Asian Institute of Management named Montxu as the new chairman of its Board of Trustees, effective from 1 September 2023. Montxu joined a respected group of successful business leaders who are dedicated to advancing the progress and welfare of Asia and its inhabitants. He was the 7th chairman of AIM, taking over from Peter Garrucho who held the position since 2017. Montxu graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, USA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting and Finance. In 2011, he was awarded the Management Man of the Year by the Management Association of the Philippines and recognized as the Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young. Seven years after that, AIM awarded Montxu with an honorary doctorate in management. Social responsibility runs in Aboitiz blood The Aboitiz Foundation, the social responsibility arm of the Aboitiz Group, donated $10 million to AIM in 2019 — known as the Aboitiz 100th Anniversary Commitment Fund. The fund aims to bridge the local and regional gap in data science and innovation. As a result of this generous donation, AIM’s Aboitiz School of Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship is now able to provide top-notch education and research opportunities in data science, with a focus on practical applications. This is made possible by collaborating with data science professionals and leaders from around the world. Recently, Montxu was elected chairperson of the AIM board of trustees. He is widely recognized for his strong commitment to social responsibility and philanthropy. Regarding the endowment to AIM, Montxu said it targeted assisting AIM in its efforts “to expand its curriculum and facilities towards the direction of a bold future, and the skills and education it will require.” Through his leadership in the Aboitiz Group and the Aboitiz Foundation, he has spearheaded numerous projects that have made a positive impact on local communities. As chairman of the Aboitiz Foundation, Montxu has played a key role in shaping its initiatives. The foundation focuses on three key areas which are education, enterprise development, and environmental conservation. “As businessmen, there is no doubt we seek profits and a return on our capital. But as Filipinos, we are equally guided by a sense of purpose to find meaningful ways of contributing to our communities across the country. This symbiotic relationship of profit and contributing to society is our secret sauce to true sustainability, allowing the Aboitiz Group to drive change for a better world by advancing business and communities,” Montxu added. The foundation implemented various programs and scholarships to improve access to quality education, foster entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities, and promote sustainability. Aboitiz Foundation has been heavily involved in rehabilitating and improving schools in underprivileged areas. They have renovated classrooms, libraries and other facilities, providing students with better learning environments. The foundation has also donated learning materials and equipment to enhance the educational experience of students. Aboitiz Foundation supports community-based programs that aim to uplift marginalized communities. These programs focus on various aspects such as health, nutrition, livelihood, and disaster resilience. The foundation works closely with local organizations and stakeholders to implement sustainable solutions and empower communities to become self-sufficient. Aboitiz Foundation places significant emphasis on environmental conservation and sustainability. They have initiated projects to protect and restore ecosystems, promote renewable energy, and reduce carbon footprint. The foundation actively supports reforestation efforts, marine conservation, and waste management initiatives. The foundation also has a strong focus on disaster response and preparedness. They have been at the forefront of providing immediate relief and support during natural disasters, such as typhoons, earthquakes and floods. The foundation also works towards building resilient communities by conducting disaster risk reduction and management training programs. Montxu Aboitiz encourages and supports employee volunteerism within the Aboitiz Group. The company promotes a culture of giving back by providing employees with opportunities to engage in community service and volunteer activities. This not only benefits the communities they serve but also fosters a sense of social responsibility among the employees. It also collaborates with various non-governmental organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders to maximize the impact of their social responsibility initiatives. They work together to address complex social issues and implement sustainable solutions that create lasting change. Aligned with the United Nations Global Compact, AEV drives policies, advocacies, and initiatives to make a lasting impact.
