October is A’TIN month as SB19 celebrates 5 amazing years
P-pop mega-group SB19 has claimed October as theirs ahead of their fifth anniversary, with multiple activities that will keep their fans, known as A’TIN, bristling with joy and excitement. “Kalahating dekada na tayo A’TIN! Maraming salamat sa patuloy na pagsuporta at pagtangkilik sa aming musika at mga kwento (We’re half a decade, A’TIN! Thank you for continuing to support our music and our journey.) And with that, we’ve prepared a month-long celebration para sa inyo. Mark your calendars for all these activities you won’t want to miss!,” said the group’s announcement online. For starters, SB19 revealed that they will be launching a podcast called Atin Atin lang on 9 October, with new episodes to be released every Monday. Apart from the podcast, which promises “heart-to-heart and intimate talks” with the group’s members Josh, Stell, Pablo, Justin and Ken, a new episode of their ardently followed web series Show Break 5 will drop 19 October. Biggest milestone But the biggest milestone the P-pop powerhouse unveiled was the launch of their own company, IZ Entertainment, which they presented to the public in a livestream on 1 October. “Siguro five years ago when SB19 was just starting, together we had a dream: That dream was to have Filipino music, Filipino talent, the whole Filipino culture pinned on the world map,” Pablo, the group’s leader and now CEO of IZ Entertainment, said. In June, SB19 transitioned to being a self-managed group. “It all started as a crazy idea during trainee days. Nagbibiruan kami na ‘Balang araw, gagawa tayo ng sarili nating company, our own management (We were just telling each other in jest that we would create our own company.) We’ll [choose] the people na pagkakatiwalaan namin,” Josh said. And now look where they are — the group that started from nothing, busking on the side of malls to sparse crowds and slaving away at endless training days for four years, the owners of their own newly minted entertainment company and the undisputed P-pop Kings increasingly acknowledged and acclaimed around the world. The group, in fact, is set to resume their world tour with new performances announced for Asia after successful, sold-out concerts in the Philippines, Canada and the United States. The boy band will be performing at Singapore’s Capitol Theatre on 15 November, Thailand’s KBank Siam Pic-Ganesha Theatre on 19 November and Dubai’s Sheikh Rashid Auditorium on 24 November, with more tour dates to be announced in the future. Josh also announced that they will represent the country at the ASEAN-Korea Music Festival Round on 21 October in Indonesia, performing alongside popular K-pop idols and artists from ASEAN countries. Fan meet The month-long celebration will not be complete, of course, without a special gift for their hometown fans. This time, the quintet said that instead of a concert for Filipino A’TIN, they will host an intimate fan meet, called Half a Decade Celebration, on 28 October at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. “Magkakaroon po kami ng fan meet na puno ng malulupit at masasaya na performances, fun games at interactions kasama kayong A’Tin,” Ken said. Fans joining them at the fan meet will go home with special-edition merchandise and cherished “experiences” with the group, added Justin, promising a more up-close and personal encounter than is usually experienced in their concerts. With the global-level career milestones the group has achieved in five years, SB19’s members have nothing but gratitude for everyone supporting them. “Gusto ko magpasalamat sa A’TIN for supporting us ever since. Kung hindi dahil sa inyo, hindi mangyayari ang ginagawa natin ngayon (If not for all of you, we won’t be able to do what we’re doing now),” Justin said. “We believe that we’re just starting. This is just the starting line for all of us, so we’re proud and I hope na proud rin kayo sa amin (We’re proud [of what we’ve accomplished], and I hope you’re also proud of us),” Ken added. A’TIN can only nod and say: We are, Ken. We sure are. The post October is A’TIN month as SB19 celebrates 5 amazing years appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Konsyerto sa Palasyo’ to honor Filipino athletes
Malacañang will hold the second "Konsyerto sa Palasyo" event on Sunday to honor Filipino athletes, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said. In a statement, PCO said Malacañang expects 300 Filipino athletes to be at the Kalayaan Grounds to watch the event at 6:30 pm on 6 August, which Konsyerto sa Palasyo and Radio Television Malacañang (RTVM) would broadcast live on social media pages. PCO Director for Broadcast Production Cris Villonco said that "Konsyerto sa Palasyo: Para sa Atletang Pilipino" will have "powerhouse vocalists," such as Aivan Mendoza. Mendoza performed for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos when they met the Filipino community in Switzerland in January. There will also be performances by artists like Chloe Redondo, Emman Buao, Jopper Ril, and Kevin Traquea. Adrian "AD BEAT" Ferrer and Neil Rey Llanes, who are both beatboxers, will be added to the lineup. The winning acapella group Pinopela from Baguio City is also expected to do a special performance. Professional dance group Douglas Nierras Powerdance will also complete the line-up. "The featured performers have mostly had viral videos on social media and were chosen for their remarkable talent and artistry," Villonco said. Villonco said the program's goal is to find new and up-and-coming artists who are good at what they do and put them on display in the "People's Palace." “Konsyerto sa Palasyo: Para sa Atletang Pilipino” is a project of the Office of the President (OP), PCO, and RTVM. The OP started the concert series in April 2023 as a way to help the artistic industries, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Sara, Teodoro to inspect Palaro site
by Neil Alcober Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, together with Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro, will conduct an ocular inspection next week, 21 July, to determine the city’s readiness in hosting this year’s Palarong Pambansa. “We’re working doubly hard to prepare all the facilities based on the specifications and standards required by the technical working group of the Palarong Pambansa and, at the same time, to simply validate all the preparations are in place,” Teodoro told this reporter in an interview on Thursday. “We’re also hoping by that period the oval track of the city is already finished and complete,” the Marikina mayor added. Teodoro also said that they hired a Malaysian consultant to inspect all the facilities and to provide specifications requirement. “We’re almost 100 percent ready for the Palarong Pambansa 2023. But, of course, there are adjustments. It’s a working progress in terms of the number of delegates that will be coming because clusters 1 and 2 are still ongoing — there are still pre-qualifying games being done for Central Luzon, and we’re waiting for that,” the mayor added. Teodoro also assured that the minimum public health standards will be strictly implemented during the conduct of the said sporting event. “We’re establishing medical stations as well as treatment medical facilities,” he said. Teodoro also said that the city government has set aside funding for the athletes who sustained injuries during the games and for their hospitalization in case they get infected with Covid-19. “This is the first undertaking in the Palarong Pambansa that the local government will be providing fund in the amount of P5 million for injuries and medical contingency of the athletes,” he said, adding that they signed an agreement with various hospitals in the city. Teodoro also said that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will be attending the opening ceremony. The Eastern Police District, headed by P/Brig. Gen. Wilson Asueta, has already set up security measures to ensure public safety and peace and order during the conduct of this year’s sporting event. “We have already coordinated with the Philippine National Police. EPD Director General Asueta was with us in the meeting for the final security arrangement,” Teodoro said. “They will also augment our security personnel in the city as well as for the traffic management. They will be assigning some PNP personnel to manage traffic during the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa,” the mayor added. The PNP, according to Teodoro, has also tightened its VIPs security arrangements. “They did a threat assessment and found no major problem ensuring that no untoward incident will happen,” he said. There will be side events like dragon boat competition and e-games such as mobile legend during the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa, Teodoro said. The mayor added that there will be a closing concert to be held at the Marikina Sports Complex, solidarity meeting for all the regions, and a three-night mayors’ night. This year’s Palarong Pambansa 2023 will kick off on 31 July 2023 at the Marikina Sports Center. This will be followed by actual games (games proper) on 1-5 August at the assigned playing venues until its closing ceremonies on 5 August. This year, the Palarong Pambansa will feature a total of 37 sports including athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, football and taekwondo. The games are expected to draw over 10,000 athletes from all over the Philippines. The post Sara, Teodoro to inspect Palaro site appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Manila Day showcases city’s very best
The Manila Day parade and celebration of the capital city’s 452nd founding anniversary on Saturday, 24 June, were a rousing success, according to Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna. “I am so pleased with the outcome of the parade,” Lacuna said in a post-event interview. “The weather was perfect, and the participation rate was 100 percent. I would like to thank all of the participants for their hard work and dedication.” The event was held at Plaza Moriones and featured a spectacular presentation of dance, floats, and costumes by government and private entities. “It’s full of fun!” Lacuna said. “I am so proud of our city and our people. We showed the world what Manila is all about today.” The parade was organized by the Manila City government and involved all city departments. It was a four-month undertaking that required the coordination of all city officials, ranging from congressmen and councilors to police, firefighters, Filipino-Chinese business groups, health workers, professionals, hospital workers, and barangays. Each group gave their own numbers, complete with costumes and dance performances. Lacuna thanked all participants for their support and vowed to make next year’s Manila Day even bigger. “I promise that because of your support and love for our city, we will prepare for a bigger celebration next year,” she said. The parade was just one of the many events that took place in Manila on Saturday to celebrate the city’s 452nd founding anniversary. Other events included a beauty pageant, a concert, and a fireworks display. “This is a day to celebrate our city’s rich history and culture,” Lacuna said. “I am so proud to be the mayor of Manila, and I am excited to see what the future holds for our city.” Meanwhile, Malate candidate Gabrielle Lanzter was crowned Miss Manila 2023 during the Coronation Night held in the evening of 23 June at the Metropolitan Theater. A total of 22 women vied for the title of Miss Manila 2023, which showcased their beauty, intelligence, and commitment to making a positive impact in their community. Mayor Lacuna crowned and sashed Lanzter, assisted by Vice Mayor Yul Servo, and tourism department chief Charlie Dungo. Grabbing runnersup honors were Karen Nicole Piccio of Pureza, Sta. Mesa; Francine Tajanlangit, representing Roxas Boulevard; and Anne De Mesa of Sta. Mesa. Angela Okol of Paco was adjudged Miss Manila Tourism. $6M raised to preserve Nina Simone’s childhood home
An art auction and New York gala have raised nearly $6 million to preserve and restore the childhood home of soul music legend and civil rights activist Nina Simone, organizers said Tuesday. The twin events brought in some $5.88 million -- far more than the original $2 million organizers hoped to raise to restore the rural North Carolina abode. "The new funding will meaningfully advance our project goals to complete the full restoration of the house and landscape," said Brent Leggs, executive director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. "With this investment, we are well on our way to opening the doors to visitors in 2024." Four US artists -- Julie Mehretu, Ellen Gallagher, Rashid Johnson and Adam Pendleton -- bought the dilapidated rural home in 2017 for $95,000. They've since worked with Leggs' organization, as well as tennis star Venus Williams, to raise money to turn the house into a cultural and historic site. The online auction, with works donated by British painter Cecily Brown and American artist Sarah Sze, was organized by Pace and Sotheby's. Among the 11 works for sale, Mehretu's ink-and-acrylic "New Dawn, Sing (for Nina)" fetched $1.6 million. Simone, whose songs found renewed resonance during the Black Lives Matter protests of recent years, had a complex, often difficult relationship with the United States, where she was born in 1933, during the era of racial segregation. Born Eunice Waymon, she spent the first years of her life in the three-room house in Tryon, in the rural southeastern state of North Carolina, with her parents and siblings, and began playing the piano at age three. But her dream of becoming a classical concert performer was shattered when she was rejected by Philadelphia's prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, an ordeal she attributed to racism. In the 1960s, Simone was active in the civil rights movement, including through rousing speeches and song. Her "Mississippi Goddam," was a response to a 1963 fire in an Alabama church started by members of the Ku Klux Klan. Three days after the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968, she performed "Why? (The king of love is dead)." Simone eventually left the United States and lived her last years in the south of France, where she died in 2003.
