AS THE BAMBOOS SWAY | China’s clam slam – Digong doesn’t give a damn

Yes, there was an uproar. Yes, there should be an uproar from the Filipino people. After all, there are no armies with pitchforks led by an Aquaman to defend the clams.  Yes, there should be an uproar for this is beyond the clams. This is about China freely, as allowed by Digong, snatching from the Filipinos their maritime rights, as dictated by the tribunals, on the Philippine Seas. This is about China occupying islands within the sphere of Philippine maritime rights. This is about Filipino fishermen not allowed by China to fish in Philippine waters......»»

FIBA: Iran sends Gilas home with a 20-point World Cup rout

It was false hope. Gilas Pilipinas had its best start in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Sunday and yet the Philippines still got demolished by Iran at the Wukesong Arena in Beijing, 95-75. After another two losses in the 17-32 classification phase, Gilas ended the horror trip to China with a 0-5 record, one of two sure teams to finish winless in the World Cup through the weekend. At -147, Gilas is in the running to finish in last place unless Japan (-115), and Jordan (-132) also finish with 0-5 records and end up with worse point differentials than the Filipinos. Ivory Coast is also 0-5 but they have better point differential than Gilas. The Philippines actually had a strong start, firing six three-point shots in the opening period. However, Iran still led after one, 30-24. Gilas’ offense cooled off, managing only 26 point through the next two quarters and the Iranians made their move, dominating for a 75-50 lead. Iran cruised in the fourth, making sure to maintain a huge lead. With China’s loss to Nigeria, the Iranians clinched an automatic Olympics slot in beating Gilas, ending up as the best Asian team in the World Cup. Iran and China both finished with identical 2-3 marks but the Iranians (+7) had superior point differential compared to the Chinese (-10). Hamed Haddadi was the high man for Iran, finishing with 19 points. Nikkhah Bahrami added 17 while Benham Yakhchali dropped 14 points. Robert Bolick hit a couple of triples in garbage time to lead Gilas in scoring with 15 points. June Mar Fajardo was good for 10 points and Andray Blatche finished with 12 before being ejected. Arguing a call, Blatche was given two technical fouls in the fourth quarter.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

FIBA World Cup By the Numbers: Reality check for Gilas

In the end, not even Gilas Pilipinas’ best start in the 2019 FIBA World Cup ended with a win. The Philippines bowed to Iran Sunday to end the World Championships. Gilas Pilipinas will head home from China with five losses. Gilas will also come home wih valuable lessons learned from a tough trip. Let’s wrap this thing up with a final By the Numbers for Team Philippines.   -147 With a 0-5 record, Gilas Pilipinas is guaranteed to finish in the bottom four of the 2019 FIBA World Cup. As of right now, the Philippines is in last place. Japan (-115) and Jordan (-132) still play one game and if they both win, Gilas will finish last. If they both lose, they need to have worse point differential than the Filipinos or else, the Philippines will keep its last place finish in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.   6 Total three-pointers connected by Gilas in the opening period. It was the best shooting start for the Philippines in the World Cup, making 6/11 from deep in the first 10 minutes. Then Gilas went cold. The national team went 5/16 the rest of the way and lost by 20.   24 Total points scored by Gilas in the opening period. The Philippines trailed by six to Iran after one, 24-30. Gilas only scored 26 in the second and third quarters however and the Iranians put the game away. After three, Iran was up, 75-50, and ended the game with a 95-75 win.   12 Total points for Andray Blatche. In what could be Andray’s final game for Gilas, the big man shot 4/12 for 12 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. He also had five fouls, the last two being technicals in the fourth quarter that led to his ejection.   4 Number of years before the next World Cup in 2023. The Philippines will co-host with Japan and Indonesia, with Manila serving as the primary. Gilas is qualified for that World Cup but it would take quite a few changes in order to not see a repeat of this 2019 performance. We’ll see if that’s the case in 2023.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

FIBA: Near-perfect Italy crushes Gilas Pilipinas by 46 in crucial World Cup opener

Gilas Pilipinas certaily shocked the everyone to start the 2019 FIBA World Cup, just not the good kind. The Philippines folded in record time as Italy completely overwhelmed the national team, taking a convincing 108-62 win Saturday to start Group D play at the Foshan International Sports & Cultural Arena in China. After Mark Barroca scored the first points for Gilas in this World Cup to force a 2-all tie, the Philippines completely fell apart as the Italians put up an absolute basketball clinic, punishing the Filipinos with crisp ball movement and near-perfect shooting. The world no. 13 Italians shot 6/8 from deep in the opening period, zooming to a 37-8 advantage. Team Azzurri then added another five triples in the second quarter for a 38-point lead at the break. Italy’s assault didn’t stop in the second half, never giving Gilas a chance for any sort of comeback. Luigi Datome shot a perfect 7/7 from the field to lead Italy with 17 points. Danilo Gallinari only missed once and added 16 points. Amedeo Della Valle came off the bench to also score 17 for the Italians. Before the World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas estimated to make 10-12 triples in order to have a shot against Italy. The national team went 0/17 from deep through three quarters and the “chance” evaporated after 10 minutes of game time. The Philippines didn’t make a three until 6:43 to go in the fourth courtesy of Kiefer Ravena. CJ Perez and Andray Blatche added another two triples late and Gilas finished 3/23 from beyond the arc. Blatche led the Philippines with 15 points and 10 rebounds but he also had nine turnovers. Perez, the PBA’s no. 1 rookie, was Gilas’ top local with 15 points on 7/12 shooting. Gilas Pilipinas will next take on world no. 4 Serbia on Monday. The Serbians demolished Angola, 105-59, to start group play.     — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
