True Filipino fiesta and music
Coca-Cola Philippines recently brought together thousands of Filipinos at their historic and grandest event yet — the #CokeKAINation. The Mall of Asia’s open spaces were transformed into a sizable picnic area, complete with hundreds of picnic tables bedecked with assorted Pinoy delicacies. There were endless glasses of ice-cold Coca-Cola for everyone to enjoy — a true Pinoy feast. More than 3,000 food lovers and fun-loving individuals came for the salu-salo, exchanging stories and making memories. Rising P-pop girl group BINI and performers Darren Espanto and Sam Concepcion graced the occasion with electrifying performances. Small Laude and Ninong Ry, two renowned influencers who are big lovers of salu-salos and Coke, were also present. The celebration marked Coca-Cola’s 111 years of being a staple of every Filipino family’s lunch. No matter how little the moment, Coca-Cola reaffirmed its commitment to making mealtimes magical for all Filipinos at this salu-salo. “The love for food and experiences is something that’s always been strongly present in Filipinos, especially in today’s youth. At Coca-Cola, we understand that many of our Gen Z Pinoys wish to share these moments with other people. And with #CokeKAINation, we combine all their different interests into one immersive experience full of food, music and amazing activities — like the classic Pinoy fiesta we all love,” said Adrian Manlapig, Coca-Cola Philippines marketing manager. The #CokeKAINation is part of the “Coke is Cooking” meals experience platform that the beverage company is introducing to the world. The #CokeKAINation, the first global meals platform, uses the various consumer passion points, including food, music and entertainment, to connect and engage with their consumers on a deeper level. It aims to celebrate the rich food culture and improve people’s dining experiences in various parts of the world. From restaurants to food stalls, Coca-Cola has surely unlocked the magic behind enjoying any kind of meal — and that is by pairing it with an ice-cold, thirst-quenching drink and in the company of friends and family. Coca-Cola Philippines looks forward to sharing more magical meal moments with Filipinos for many more years to come. The post True Filipino fiesta and music appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Linking Fatima-Mediatrix to Russia-Ukraine
(Author’s Note: The Marian messages quoted here are not necessarily authenticated by the Catholic Church.) There was a report years ago from a Mediatrix devotee, who requested anonymity that Our Lady of Fatima healed the aunt of Vladimir Putin and Putin himself. No details were given. The devotee said he visited Putin several times. This report by a Mediatrix devotee links Lipa and Lisbon to Russia and Ukraine. Lipa and Lisbon were linked after Fatima’s Miracle of the Sun was repeated in a Mediatrix shrine in Mindanao on the 100th anniversary of Fatima, precisely to the hour. As a child, Putin was secretly baptized into the Orthodox Church because the Communist Party banned it. The Christian in Putin may be the potential key to ending the war in Ukraine. In 1960, Pope John XXIII unsealed the Third Secret of Fatima in the presence of Cardinal Augustin Bea and his secretary, Fr. Malachi Martin. In an interview at the Art Bell Show USA in 1997, Fr. Martin hinted that, based on the Third Secret, the solution to the world’s ills would come from Ukraine and Russia. The conversion of Russia Our Lady of Fatima revealed that the triumph of her Immaculate Heart would come from the conversion of Russia. St. Pope John Paul II soon consecrated Russia to her Immaculate Heart. Vatican Mariologists attributed the consecration to the ensuing momentary era of world peace, a “Marian intervention.” In 1994, Mikhail Gorbachev visited St. Pope John Paul II, the first visit in history by the Kremlin to the Papacy. Gorbachev instituted Perestroika (reconciliation) and Glasnost (openness), leading to the opening of Christian churches inside Russia. Immediately, Ukraine announced the legalization of the Ukrainian Church (about 70 percent Orthodox), which was brutally disbanded by Joseph Stalin in 1946. The Berlin Wall then crumbled, leading to the reunification of Germany and the end of the Cold War. Gorbachev’s reforms led to the fall of the USSR. Among its former satellites were Ukraine and Belarus, now arch-enemies in the war in Ukraine. Marian’s intimacy with Ukraine On 22 January 2022, during a Ukrainian Orthodox celebration in an unspecified town, a white dove descended on top of the altar painting of the Baptism of Jesus, a warning perhaps of a Russian invasion, which happened a few days later. Ukraine was the first nation to be consecrated to the Blessed Virgin in 1037. In 1914, two weeks before World War I, the Virgin told 22 field workers near the Church of the Holy Trinity in the village of Hrushiv: “There will be a war. Russia will become a godless country. As a nation, Ukraine will suffer terribly for eighty years — and will have to live through the world wars, but it will be free afterwards.” The prophecy was fulfilled. In 1987, a year after the Chernobyl tragedy, in the same church in Hrushiv, the Virgin told 12-year-old visionary Marina Kizyn: “Do not forget those who have died. Chernobyl is a reminder and a sign that …. THROUGH THE BLOOD OF (UKRAINIAN) MARTYRS WILL COME THE CONVERSION OF RUSSIA.” A bright light filled the church where the Virgin appeared. There were daily apparitions until 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption, which attracted about 500,000 people in total. Many witnessed the apparitions. Hrushiv became an instant pilgrim center. The Virgin of Hrushiv became Our Lady of Ukraine. Our Lady appeared to KGB agents trying to manage the huge crowds. At that time, churches were closed, and Christianity was banned. Priests from the “underground Church” emerged from hiding and defied the KGB, saying ten Holy Masses daily outside the church. The KGB did not touch them. Hrushiv was saved from a deadly cholera epidemic in 1855, with not a single death in the village, after the people offered Mass at a spring that suddenly came out of the ground. The Virgin demonstrated her love for the Ukrainian people when she said: “I have come on purpose to thank the Ukrainian people because you have suffered the most for the Church of Christ in the last 70 years. I have come to comfort you and tell you that your suffering will soon end. Ukraine will become an independent state.” (Source: oclarim.com.mo, 6 July 2018) Does Putin have a role in the “conversion” of Russia and the end of the war in Ukraine? Will peace be attained through the blood of Ukrainians as martyrs? These remain to be seen. eastwindreplyctr@gmail.com The post Linking Fatima-Mediatrix to Russia-Ukraine appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Paying tribute to Criselda, Rustan’s bestselling iconic fashion designer
In her lifetime, Criselda Lontok epitomized the kind of woman for whom the legendary Glecy Rustia Tantoco established her home-based establishment that would grow into the country’s foremost luxury department store. No wonder that the Rustan’s Department Store founder, known for her keen understanding of the ladies of Manila’s 400, offered to Criselda, one of Manila’s most beautiful women and smartest dressers, a beauty queen and a fashion model, an exclusive line intended for her kind. Criselda, who had served initially as a buyer and merchandiser, and spearheaded a number of homegrown Italian-inspired Rustan’s labels, accepted the challenge, keeping in mind her friends and acquaintances, the quintessential upper-class Filipina — fashionable, committed to philanthropic and civic causes, herself engaged in an enterprise or a profession that fits her colegiala or finishing school education and, of course, prominent and socially-adept. Having seen the world and constantly on the go in the jet-setting era, these women, like Criselda herself, knew the best of foreign brands and were accustomed to wearing them. [caption id="attachment_186354" align="aligncenter" width="1365"] JOHN Fernandez, Criselda Lontok’s son. | PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF RUSTANS[/caption] Taking her cue from the composite personality traits of her intended clientele, beautiful people as they were then called, Criselda went on to create dresses that appealed to the ladies’ fine sensibilities anchored on a lifestyle of privilege, comfort, grace and sophisticated aesthetics. Her ingenuity could not have been more apt, as proven by her designs hogging the limelight, the topic of conversation among socialites who finally found the dress that fit them and their style — and becoming the best-seller of Rustan’s. From its beginnings in the early 1980s, the label Criselda went on to grow as among the top offerings and go-to brands of the country’s sole purveyor of high style. And even as Rustan’s aimed for inclusivity to address the needs of professionals and customers who aspired to the good life within their budget, Criselda remained the top choice for those who sought to be attractive and stylish, while being practical and wise in their choices. A Criselda was always a good investment. Through the decades, just like a select few things that get better as they get older, Criselda, the exclusive clothing brand, has transcended fashion trends and social seasons and has maintained its eminent position in the country’s pret-a-porter sector. Criselda’s recent demise might have led to a void, especially in the firmament of Philippine fashion, but her eponymous brand, Criselda, just like her name, has endured. She may be gone but she is remembered, first by her Rustan’s family led by Zenaida R. Tantoco, chief executive officer and chairman of the Rustan Group of Companies, her friends, devoted clientele, and the many others whose lives she touched through her professionalism, kindness, friendliness and warmth, which she generously gave especially to those who came to peruse her creations, mostly cut along classic lines but not sacrificing women’s desire to be chic and trendy. Her career with Rustan’s is a story worth telling as it is inspiring, one that would encourage our young women to pursue their dreams. As a young wife and mother who believed she could contribute to the world out there, Criselda applied for a job at Rustan’s. The grand lady of the number one purveyor of luxury in the country, Glecy R. Tantoco, took her in despite her initial doubts as to whether Criselda, who comes from a good family in Batangas and married into another good family from Laguna, would stick it out despite the rigorous requirements of the job. Glecy Tantoco was known for her insistence on the efficiency of her staff, along with a strong sense of service and an overall image in terms of personal looks and demeanor that defined the Rustan’s style of appropriateness, class and good breeding. [caption id="attachment_186355" align="aligncenter" width="1078"] ERNIE Lopez and Bertha Felicino of Bantay Bata.[/caption] Thankfully, Criselda proved herself worthy, even as she had to deal directly with her tough and no-nonsense boss. In fact, they clicked, as Glecy turned out to be a supportive mentor. Taking Criselda under her wing, she gave her additional responsibilities and assigned her to the forefront when dignitaries and international socialites shopped at Rustan’s. More than the label and the prestige, what Glecy Tantoco gave her were the right work ethic and belief in herself. Criselda remembered her mentor, “GRT (as Glecy was called) was so very hardworking, you just had to be as hardworking, too. I truly admired her foresight. She had the drive. She taught me that I must be sure of myself and only if I was sure should I pursue whatever I wanted to do.” It did not take long for Criselda’s outfits to become a must among Manila’s prominent women who love to wear them not only when attending big parties but also when visiting with friends, shopping at the mall, or relaxing with the family at home. Whether these were day dresses, afternoon outfits, cocktail dresses, or ravishing evening gowns, they lapped them up, happy at the thought of not having to bother with fittings and the encumbrances that went with wearing haute couture. If they wore her creations, it was because they believed her when she spoke to them of fashion sense and carriage and, of course, compatibility with what they wore. She once said, “It is important to consider your age. An 80-year-old woman should not even wear mini skirts...just a little above the knee is permissible but not one that shows her prominent varicose veins and other unsightly parts.” The post Paying tribute to Criselda, Rustan’s bestselling iconic fashion designer appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
New York Fashion Week: On holiday with Michael Kors, shivers from Altuzarra
A holiday air with Michael Kors, shivers from Altuzarra, and Tory Burch asserting herself in a spectacular setting: New York Fashion Week expressed its diversity on Monday, the fourth day of the spring-summer 2024 shows. On vacation with Kors American designer Michael Kors took the audience on vacation at his spring-summer show, with Brooklyn's Domino Park, along the East River, transformed into a seaside promenade under the eyes of actresses Blake Lively and Halle Berry. "I can't take you all to Capri, so I can take you to Brooklyn," the 64-year-old Kors said smiling, referring to the Italian island. Models showcased light outfits embroidered with lace, a mini-skirt and blouse set, short dresses and pants paired with small tops in the brand's first show since the announcement that its holding company Capri would be purchased by Coach parent company Tapestry. A loose sweater in cashmere and cotton drops to just below the beltline, leaving the wearer's legs completely uncovered -- a nod to the recent "no pants" trend, maybe, or perhaps something more practical: "You can wear it in the heat. You can wear it when it's cool... We all know that the world has gotten too warm," Kors said. "We are increasingly dealing with, 'How do we get dressed?' Particularly when it's too warm outside, and in (the) office, it's too cold and we're freezing." Everything was in keeping with the vacation vibe, with flat sandals, and an artisanal, hand-woven wicker basket bag in a nod to the recently deceased singer and style icon Jane Birkin. "A British woman living in France, who had this very casual, laid-back attitude," said Kors. "I actually think it was very American." Shivers at Altuzarra The atmosphere took a darker turn at the Altuzarra show, held in the Manhattan Central Library under a high dome with opaque windows. French-American designer Joseph Altuzarra drew on Roman Polanski's timeless horror classic "Rosemary's Baby" for inspiration, creating a dark setting accompanied by ominous music. The collection gives pride of place to slip dresses worn under long jackets, and matching sets were transformed with crinkled satin and undone seams. Short tulle overlay dresses were covered with a transparent organza veil, reminiscent of a doll. With this collection, Altuzarra wrote in the show notes, he wanted to exude "a haunting, enigmatic allure, while anchored in everyday style and pragmatism." Tory Burch asserts herself "In a world of chaos, I wanted a little bit of calm. But I didn't want to be minimalist," Tory Burch said after her show, held in a grandiose setting under the roof and between the undulating granite facades of a new atrium at the American Museum of Natural History. She stepped up the experimentation: ultra-short skirts worn under a parka or a collarless blazer in futuristic shiny purple, with tinted glasses. Among the most original pieces of the collection, there is a cape and dress set in knitted viscose which ends in rounded reliefs. The fabrics are light, but they create structure. Like her other dresses, they are cut diagonally above the knees and leave one shoulder uncovered. The American designer said she wanted to take items like corsets "that were restrictive to women in the past and reclaim them and make them part of beautiful femininity". Essential Bangkok experience
Take the Airport Rail Link and SkyTrain. If you don’t have too many pieces of luggage, says our tour guide Nattapong Jongboonsab, the Airport Rail Link is the quickest — and cheapest — way to get into the city. The SkyTrain is also the best way to get around Bangkok and beat the traffic jam. The trains run regularly and are often quite busy. Check out Siam Premium Outlet. The perfect starting point for most tourists — with shopping as the first order of the day — just 20 minutes away from the Suvarnabhumi Airport. It is where the world’s biggest fashion stores and high-end brands are located. Think Balenciaga, Chanel, Burberry, Versace, Ferragamo, Bally, Jimmy Choo, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs etc., alongside a host of casual, sporting and accessories brands, including Adidas, Nike, Fred Perry, Onitsuka Tiger, Samsonite, Swarovski. The outdoor complex houses a number of air-conditioned restaurants — like the popular S&P Thai Restaurant (try their Chicken Green Curry and Seabass Yellow Curry on Rice — the best!) — and food stalls selling popular Thai street food dishes. Other high-end stores in the city you must visit: Central Village, Iconsiam and Siam Paragon. Explore Iconsiam — The most impressive shopping center in Bangkok with more than 7,000 shops, 100 restaurants and even a floating market. The ground floor is a bustling indoor night market filled with food stalls dishing out classic Bangkok street snacks, including oyster and crab omelet, spicy and pungent curries, grilled squids, prawns and eels, pad thai, rice bowls, noodles, deep-fried chicken and pork, pomelo salad and their ever-popular mango sticky rice — all at affordable price. Our guide says it is best visited on a rowdy weekend, with endless orders of beers to chase away the fiery flavors. Walk around Siam Square. It’s a unique hipster block with something for everyone, from boutique stores to cool cafes and patisseries. The area is so popular among the young generation who enjoys hanging out with friends over cups of iced coffee or milk tea, specially from the most-talked about and most Instagrammable dog-friendly restaurant, the Dosan Dalmatian by Mammia. It offers western and Korean dishes with indoor and outdoor sitting. It’s best to order a cappuccino or latte because there’s an adorable puppy face cream on top. Sooo cute. Shop till you drop at Jodd Fairs. Another open-air night market selling local and imported items from branded clothing to bric-a-brac. Pick up a plaid shirt, slap on some oversized sunglasses and pair it all with sandals and socks while you’re at it. After your retail therapy, stop by for a cold beer or mocktails and a snack of churros at one of its outdoor food stalls. Pamper yourself at Let’s Relax. After a long day of shopping and sightseeing, one of the best things you can do for your body and mental well-being is hit the spa. Some of the world’s best spas are in Bangkok, and Let’s Relax is one of them. It offers authentic, traditional Thai body massage. However, we just opted for the one-and-a-half-hour foot massage. Not bad at all. The post Essential Bangkok experience appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Woody Allen says supports 'MeToo as 50th film shows at Venice
After a critical mauling for Roman Polanski, there was a warmer reception at the Venice Film Festival on Monday for another blacklisted director -- Woody Allen -- who insisted he supported the #MeToo movement "when it's beneficial". The festival also saw the dark side of Elvis Presley with Sofia Coppola's well-received biopic of the rocker's wife, "Priscilla". But there was particular adulation for Allen's 50th film, "Coup de Chance" ("Stroke of Luck"), underlining that he is now far more popular in Europe than the United States. His first movie entirely in French is a classic Allen morality tale about love, infidelity and murder. Most reviews called it his best work in a decade, following a weak run of films from the prolific director. "I thought to myself: it's my 50th film and I love Paris so much that I'll make it in French... And then I could think I'm a genuine European filmmaker," he told reporters. The 87-year-old has been shunned by Hollywood since the #MeToo movement emerged, due to allegations he molested his adopted daughter in the 1990s, which he says were fabricated by his ex-partner Mia Farrow. He told Variety that he backed #MeToo "where it does something positive. "I read instances where it's very beneficial... for women," he said, but added: "When it's silly, it's silly." Cancelled himself The festival has drawn flak for including Allen and Polanski, who has a child sex conviction and faces other unresolved assault allegations, in its out-of-competition section. Allen's film fared far better than Polanski's slapstick comedy "The Palace", which was torn to shreds by critics after its premiere on Saturday. Set in a fancy Swiss hotel at the turn of the century, and with jokes that include a dog humping a penguin, critics called "The Palace" a "laughless debacle" (Variety) and "soul-throttlingly crap" (The Telegraph). "It beggars belief, but, at the age of 90, Polanski may have actually cancelled himself with a film that will probably never see the light of day in any English-speaking countries," wrote Deadline. American myth Meanwhile, Priscilla Presley joined Coppola on the red carpet for the biopic of her life. There were strong reviews, though many said it made disturbing viewing, showing Elvis wooing a 14-year-old when he was 24 -- "an insecure narcissist fixated on a teenage girl and unwilling to allow his young wife any independence," according to The Independent. Priscilla herself told reporters "Sofia did an amazing job", but added: "It's very difficult to sit and watch a film about you, about your life and your love." She defended their relationship, saying they"never had sex" when they were first together during Elvis's military service in Germany. "He was very kind, very soft, very loving, but he also respected the fact that I was 14-years-old," she said. Coppola won the top prize Golden Lion in Venice in 2010 for "Somewhere" -- controversially awarded by her ex-boyfriend, Quentin Tarantino. Her new film stars Cailee Spaeny ("Mare of Easttown") as Priscilla, and Jacob Elordi, famous as the heartthrob in Netflix show "Euphoria", as the rock'n'roll legend. There are 23 films competing for the Golden Lion, to be announced on Saturday. Frontrunners include "Poor Things", with Emma Stone as a sexually voracious reanimated corpse, and "Maestro", in which Bradley Cooper transforms into legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. David Fincher's "The Killer", starring Michael Fassbender as a cold-blooded assassin losing control, and Michael Mann biopic "Ferrari", were also well-received by critics. Many of the stars have been unable to attend the festival due to strikes by Hollywood actors and writers, primarily over pay in the streaming era and the potential threat of AI. Cooking is in his Spanish blood
Sometime in 2017, a veterinarian from the province of Valencia in Spain went on vacation with three of his best friends to the island of Siargao in the Philippines. They enjoyed surfing a lot and fell in love with the place so hard that by the end of their 15-day holiday, they promised to return and even considered relocating. [caption id="attachment_178310" align="aligncenter" width="1707"] CHEF Luis Martinez | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF DOñA ELENA[/caption] A year later, the four amigos made their “final decision.” They made the big move to Siargao and “luckily” found work. The veterinarian, though, ended up becoming a chef and opened a restaurant he called Alma. Then the pandemic struck and, soon, a super typhoon hit the island. The newbie chef had to close down his first culinary venture. Fast-forward to 2023: Chef Luis Martinez is coolly directing his staff at Terraza Martinez restaurant in Bonifacio Global City this late morning of 30 August for an event in collaboration with Doña Elena brand of olive oil. He then introduces the menu he’s specially prepared for the media representatives covering the event. Martinez maintains his coolness as he sits down for an interview with DAILY TRIBUNE and another publication. He says his three friends of 35 years who came with him to Siargao six years ago are still on the island. “We’ve known each other for 35 years. I have my little family from Spain here.” Back in Spain, he has his parents, four siblings and other relatives that make up his “core family” of 25 members who can all cook. He fondly remembers growing up bonding with his family around the kitchen “cooking, eating, drinking wine” particularly every Sunday and on Christmas. He mentions a couple of his comfort food, such as paella, which traces some of its origins in Valencia, and cocido, a beef soup that he likens to the Pinoy bulalo. That’s how Martinez learned how to cook around age nine. “I never studied culinary arts. I never worked in a kitchen before. My first kitchen was Siargao three years ago. Now, this one,” he says of Terraza Martinez, which he set up in 2022 with the Nikkei Group that runs several restaurants. He also admits to making a lot of mistakes along the way of his trial-and-error ways while trying a lot of flavors. [gallery size="full" columns="2" ids="178311,178312"] In terms of culinary, he says he brings “almost everything” of the Spain he grew up into Terraza Martinez. “My idea is I want to make our guests to feel like having lunch or dinner in Spain,” he explains, “with the same kind of ambience, with the same kind of essence where you have a little of tapas, paella, where you can enjoy not only the food but the company of your friends and the comfort of the food. So I’m trying to bring some Spanish culture here as we eat there.” Martinez turns candid when asked about his observations of Filipino cuisine: “The flavors are a little bit sweet than we’re used to. Also, I need to put a little bit less of what I’ll put in Spain. I use a little bit of sugar to make it a little sweet. “I need to adjust, yes. When I opened my first place, I got a lot of complaints because they were saying my food was little bit salty. They were expecting a little bit of sweetness. So I need to adjust, yes. Even here in Terraza Martinez. It has a little bit of Filipino taste.” The chef, for instance, had to take out gazpacho, a cold soup, from the menu because Filipinos tend to prefer hot soups. Overall, though, the reception to Terraza Martinez has been overwhelmingly positive by diners who are made up of “90 percent Filipinos and 10 percent foreigners.” This makes Martinez truly “surprised and happy,” saying, “I wasn’t expecting this a lot of people. All our customers really like the place. They like the food. For me, because I’m the chef, wow!” Next on the chef’s plate is a new restaurant in Siargao he hopes to open soon. That means he’ll be dividing his time, about 15 days each, in Siargao and in Manila. Spain can wait in the meantime. “I try to visit my family and friends every two months, maximum three… I spend summer here because right now I’m opening a restaurant, so I cannot go.” Meantime, Martinez continues to learn more about the Philippines with some help from his Filipina girlfriend, who’s teaching him a bit of the national language. He also picks up words here and there from conversations. He also looks forward to surfing in Siargao, but, when he’s in Manila, just swims and has recently taken up boxing to burn the calories he consumes eating. Maker & Made resto draws brunch crowd
As businesses are thriving again following the coronavirus plague for three long years, people as usual are coming in droves to shopping and dining establishments in the busy commercial centers of the metropolis. [caption id="attachment_171844" align="aligncenter" width="822"] Bread baked fresh daily.[/caption] [gallery size="full" ids="171842,171846,171845"] We can see customers like honeybees enjoying various food delicacies in restaurants and sipping hot or cold coffee at cafes. Maker and Made, located at the Milestone Bldg. in Bonifacio Global City, is one such coffee shop that draws folks to its menu offerings. People from various nationalities and economic status, though the place is the habitat of the powerful, famous and rich, are fond of coming to the establishment to enjoy its coffee and other food delicacies. The coffee shop is manned by 30 ex-overseas Filipino workers who worked for over 20 years in a famous coffee shop in Singapore. Though gainfully employed there, they left, only to join with this company as all of them are Filipinos except the owners. John Paul Galang, executive sous chef and sous chef in Singapore for so many decades, said the place opened on 24 May. It is owned by Communal Artisan Group whose business acumen primarily is focused in foods and beverages. Galang averred that the resto’s specialty is coffee from a local source, artisan baking and other delicious food delicacies with an Aussie style known as brunch, but it is rooted of Filipino sensibilities. The coffee shop opens at 7 a.m. and takes it last order at 5 p.m. Rue Ribon, executive chef and certified executive officer, said the owners of this coffee shop have the heart to help and bless our Filipino small farmers as coffee beans and other products are locally produced. They also work with coffee growers from Mindanao. The cafe can accommodate close to 60 people as it has communal tables, bar seats and al fresco seats and tables along with a high-tech comfort room and washing area. Food and coffee are served in locally produced ceramic earthenware. Many components in their dishes and baked threats are all made fresh in-house, and should their customers take the goodies home, their packaging is biodegradable with less impact on the environment. Next time you pass by or have a scheduled food trip at BGC, why not give it a try at Maker and Made? The post Maker & Made resto draws brunch crowd appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

TONY BENNETT : GRIT AND GRACE
Tributes have continued to pour in for Tony Bennett, the last of the great mid-20th-century American crooners who died on 21 July at 96, after outliving his fellow giants in popular music such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and gaining a whole new generation of fans in the era of social media with his number-one duets album with Lady Gaga. That 2014 late-career triumph had made Bennett, at 88, the oldest living American performer to notch a number-one album on the charts. It was more proof at the time of the extraordinary odds-defying grit that undergirded the grace and elegance of Bennett’s persona as the living embodiment of classic American standards, a sound that in the post-rock era many had banished to the dismissive-sounding “adult contemporary” category. Sinatra himself crowned Bennett as “the best singer in the business” in a 1965 interview with Life magazine. “He excites me when I watch him. He moves me. He’s the singer who gets across what the composer has in mind, and probably a little more,” said the Chairman of the Board. Fifty-eight years later, Elton John, decades and a whole music era removed from Sinatra, was moved to say at Bennett’s passing: “Without doubt the classiest singer, man, and performer you will ever see. He’s irreplaceable.” Indeed, Bennett was sui generis, from his singular sound to his defiant artistry. “Neither a fluid singer nor an especially powerful one, he did not have the mellifluous timbre of [Bing] Crosby or the rakish swing of Sinatra,” wrote the New York Times in its obituary. “If Louis Armstrong’s tone was distinctively gravelly, Mr. Bennett’s wasn’t quite; ‘sandy’ was more like it.” You can hear that sandy rasp even in his early, ebullient years, in signature hits like “Rags to Riches,” “Cold Cold Heart” (originally a country ditty by Hank Williams, remade by Bennett and sublimely covered 51 years later by Norah Jones), and of course, his timeless “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Touch of roughness The touch of roughness was what gave Bennett’s sound a rich, warm quality sort of like the hiss and pop of a vinyl record, conveying a more grounded, open-hearted, truthful sense to everything that he sang. In later years, as his lung power diminished with age, he cannily pruned his singing to a more direct, compact style, the belts now occasional but always at surprising moments, the lovely loping line maintained along with the heartfelt near-whispers. He kept to that sound and refused to change his style in the face of the sea change in popular music that would engulf his generation of swinging, jazzy entertainers. “Mr. Bennett stubbornly resisted record producers who urged gimmick songs on him, or, in the 1960s and early ’70s, who were sure that rock ’n’ roll had relegated the music he preferred to a dusty bin perused only by a dwindling population of the elderly and nostalgic,“ wrote Bruce Weber in the New York Times. Eight decades Time an unprecedented eight decades in the business some 20 Grammy awards, and the reverence of his peers and the public ultimately proved Bennett right: that his music still had a place in the modern world, that he could stick to what he did best — sing like nobody else the Great American Songbook, that canon of masterworks by the likes of Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen — and people of whatever stripe and age, undeterred by his gentleman’s suit and courtly manners from a bygone age, would sit and listen. Because great songs are great songs no matter the era, and as he once put it, “I wanted to sing the great songs, songs that I felt really mattered to people.” Asked if he ever got bored of his repertoire, Bennett said: “No. Do you get tired of making love?” “I was taught never to compromise; to never sing a cheap song,” he explained. “I never look down at the audience and think that they are ignorant, or think that I’m more intelligent than they are.” Bennett said these words in 2012, when, at 86, he had just released a new album, was doing grueling concert tours, and was also dabbling in painting in his free time. His historic 11 o’clock peak was two years away — the Cheek to Cheek album with Lady Gaga that made him an octogenarian with a number-one album on the Billboard 200 chart. (Attesting to his longevity and range, before Gaga he had collaborations as well with other epoch-defining female performers such as Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand.) “Here I am today, at 86, and I’m even more passionate now than ever before. I feel that I’m at the top of my game, and things just keep getting better and better,” he said with characteristic cheer in his 2012 book Life Is a Gift: The Zen of Bennett. In announcing Bennett’s passing on Friday, the Twitter account under his name revealed: “Tony left us today but he was still singing the other day at his piano and his last song was ‘Because of You‘, his first #1 hit.” What grit. What grace. The post TONY BENNETT : GRIT AND GRACE appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion
By Jocelyn Valle and Ann Jenireene Gomez Ralph Lauren is easily one of the most mispronounced designer labels around. For the record, this American icon of fashion is pronounced this way: “Ralf LO-ren,” according to Martin Elmer Santos, the manager of Ralph Lauren’s Polo brand boutique at Greenbelt 5. That’s right, not the French-sounding “Ralf Lo-Rahn.” [caption id="attachment_160185" align="aligncenter" width="853"] AUBREY Miles and Troy Montero.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160186" align="aligncenter" width="1703"] Kieza Garra and Jeanette Ong.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160188" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] (FROM left) SSI Group Inc. president Anton Huang, Maricel and Donny Pangilinan, Nikki Huang, Ella and Anthony Pangilinan.PHOTOGRAPHS courtesy of Polo Ralph Lauren[/caption] Santos spoke to Daily Tribune at the store’s recent opening. “We have the different collections here,” he said. Aside from its signature Polo Shirt, which has been around since 1972, Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s line presents several collections to check out in Spring/Summer 2023. There’s the timeless collection called Heritage Icons, as inspired by The Hamptons’ preppy fashion. Another one, The Curator, is a refined sportswear merged with Manhattan’s Gallery tastemakers’ sophisticated gallery look. The Summit collection reinvigorates the Active line with archival styles and technical performance, while the Key West line displays a relaxed island lifestyle. Lastly, a diverse collection of vibrant seasonal fashion is showcased in the South America range. It suits perfectly in warm weather and blends well with exotic adventure vibes. Polo Ralph Lauren Women’s line, on the other hand, has a Spring/Summer 2023 collection that covers Mediterranean, California Modern and Laurel Canyon themes of undeniably timeless and classic style. Likewise not to be missed is the Polo ID collection, which showcases handbags, footwear and other leather goods that embody elegance and comfort. Star-studded affair The opening of the Greenbelt branch (the first at Shangri-La mall and soon at Rustan’s Makati and Solaire), was attended by some of the notable celebrities in the fields of fashion, beauty pageants and show business. They looked cool, chic and comfortable in Polo Ralph Lauren fashion pieces. Actor Maricel Laxa turned up with her husband Anthony Pangilinan, a media practitioner and management consultant, along with their daughter Ella Pangilinan and, later on, with their son, matinee idol Donny Pangilinan. “I want something comfortable and easy to carry. I don’t want anything elaborate. I’m a little bit stylish now because I have kids who are more exposed to fashion.” Aubrey Miles, also an actress and entrepreneur, came at the event with her husband and fellow celebrity Troy Montero. She had this to say on dressing up: “As long as it looks good on me and it flatters my body, I go for that. I’m more stylish when I go out alone. When I’m with Troy, I’m more on the sexy side. With our kids, just a long dress with pockets or with a sling bag.” For his part, Montero said, “I just always want to be comfortable. I think my fashion sense changed over the years. I’m definitely more into comfort than anything else. Once you feel good and comfortable, you can be confident walking around. Nothing makes you more uncomfortable and less confident if it’s not fitted. I like to keep up with the trends and things like that. Like today, I’m wearing this Polo shirt, and I kinda went for the one with a little bit non-traditional.” More actors talked to us about their fashion sense. Max Collins described her fashion sense as “laidback chic.” She explained, “I always wear something that I can move in, but at the same time it’s classic and simple. I love neutral colors as well.” Sofia Andres said she goes for “classic, simple and chic at the same time,” even when she's with her three-year-old daughter. “I only wear pants, shirts, sometimes a coat, blazer, that’s it. That looks amazing.” Young star Kyline Alcantara admitted letting her moods dictate her fashion choices. “Sometimes I’m into street style. Sometimes I’m into classy, simple. It really depends on my mood. I feel that’s what fashion is. It’s art also, how you describe yourself, what makes you feel confident.” Celeste Cortesi, who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines in 2022, declared, “I like wearing anything, depends on where I go. I just want to be comfortable and chic at the same time.” Fashion model-turned-actress and host Phoemela Baranda noted that having a baby (her second in 20 years) has changed her body type and she works around that. “I try to look whatever suits my body type now and I’m comfortable with. So, I’m comfortable with long dresses. But of course a little updated naman. I update with accessories or a body.” Myrza Sison, former top model and now a speaker, host, journalist and certified executive coach had this to say about her fashion sense: “Minimal effort for maximum impact. “So I believe in style, rather than fashion, and I think the more you know yourself, the more you can have personal style. Otherwise, you’re just gonna try every trend and you won’t really present a strong image to the world.” The post Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
First EXO-themed café opens in QC
You don’t have to travel all the way to South Korea to experience a taste of Korean culture. A lot of Korean-inspired cafes are already popping up in Metro Manila, providing a familiar and comfortable ambiance especially for coffee enthusiasts and K-pop fans. One trendy, Korean-inspired café that’s making a buzz these days is Café-408, the first EXO-themed café located on the second floor of The Rock Lifestyle Hub in Quezon City. Opened last 8 April, same day as K-pop group EXO’s 11th anniversary, Café-408 serves comfort food and a wide variety of quality coffee and non-coffee beverages. The cafe also incorporates EXO’s aesthetics and concepts. Among its menu are Truffle Fries, pasta, Birthday Cake Cookie, American Breakfast, croissant, muffins, s’mores and Chanyeol’s tteokbokki. Drinks include cold brew, Spanish Latte, Strawberry Mocha Latte, Blue Lemon Fizz and Mango Strawberry Fizz. [caption id="attachment_153711" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Mocha Latte.[/caption] On 30 June, when EXO’s “Hear Me Out” came out, fans gathered at the café for a free viewing of the pre-release track’s much-awaited music video. Similarly, a cupsleeve event was held by PHIXOs (Filipino EXO fans) as a way to celebrate the track’s release. Cupsleeve events are celebrations done by coffee shops or organized by fandoms to celebrate a K-pop artist’s birthday or comeback. Café-408 also unveiled its list of events for July on their social media accounts, including a whole-day open event dedicated to EXO’s comeback on 10 July and a celebration of its subunit EXO-SC’s debut anniversary on 21 July. Swiss welcome offers sweet respite
Welcome to “The Suite Life,” which explores the world of hotels in and out of the Philippines. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a curious novice, I hope this column helps guide you to what hotels in the Philippines and beyond have to offer. From the bustling cityscape of Manila to the tranquil beaches of Boracay, it’s a journey through the best hotels, resorts and villas in the country and beyond to discover the most exciting and exotic hotels in the world. Pack your bags and join me on this exciting adventure as I share the hidden gems and ultimate destinations for your next getaway. Our first hotel for this month is the Swissötel Clark in Pampanga. [caption id="attachment_148661" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF Swissötel Clark | Swissötel Clark Pampanga.[/caption] Cheese and chocolate, watches and private banks — if there’s any country defined by these words, it’s Switzerland. Renowned for its punctuality and precision, the country is very well-known for its high-end horology. If you want to know how deep this characteristic runs within the country, Switzerland’s national hero, William Tell, is more famous for shooting an apple off his son’s head than his defense of Switzerland from many a tyrant. Such precision is what Tell and Switzerland are known for, and it’s this exact value that the Swiss carry into hospitality. [caption id="attachment_148662" align="aligncenter" width="525"] THE atrium.[/caption] Apart from what the history books will say about Switzerland, it’s also a place I’ve gotten to know up close. I lived in Neuchatel when my husband was taking his post-grad degree and got to imbibe in its culture and way of life, day in and out. It’s always in the details. These may seem minute or effortless, but they always add a thoughtful layer to the whole experience. Such touches abound at Swissötel Clark, and it definitely reminded me of the Swiss approach to doing things. The welcome: Located in the Clark Freeport Zone, I was surprised to find the hotel packed and buzzing. The lobby café was full, leaving no seats available, and the bright, bustling lobby was filled with people waiting — either for loved ones or colleagues — to be taken in by Swiss hospitality or having just finished a relaxing stay. The lobby was a walk away from the casino, leaving the vibrant lobby to shine all on its own. The room: Rooms and suites at Swissötel Clark welcome you with floor-to-ceiling views of the city or the mountains, flooding the room with natural light. A medley of creams, grays and browns, coupled with a king-size bed and Posturepedic mattress, high-speed Wi-Fi, cable and satellite TV channels, and USB charging stations provide a great sense of comfort for anyone looking to relax. The bathroom continues this philosophy with marble furnishings, a rain shower, and a soaking tub. Anyone looking for a more luxurious experience can upgrade to a Swiss Executive Lounge access suite with complimentary breakfast and refreshments. [caption id="attachment_148664" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PREMIUM room with king size bed.[/caption] The restaurants: I wasn’t able to try the breakfast because my alarm didn’t go off that morning, but I was able to try meals at Swissötel Clark’s two restaurants. Markt is their all-day dining buffet with incredible food. Initially conceived as an a la carte offering for diners to choose from, every station offers the full package with mains at every section, making them all stars in their own right. The hotel also has a permanent place on the menu for classic Swiss dishes like älplermagronen (Swiss macaroni and cheese with applesauce) and Zurich-style veal with mushrooms. [caption id="attachment_148663" align="aligncenter" width="525"] NASI, a contemporary restaurant that specializes in Filipino cuisine.[/caption] Ristorante Di Verona, on the other hand, is easily one of the best places to try modern and authentic Italian cuisine without leaving the country. With large, luxurious windows and al fresco seating, their spacious halls are filled with soothing Italian music and the noise of happy diners. They offer a fine selection of aperitifs, over 300 wines sourced from various regions of Europe, digestivos, and other Italian favorites, as well as their famous balsamico de Modena 25 anni 550, delightfully paired with Italian bread. Unique touches to the hotel: Details like the collar brooch and the shoe buckle of the doorman did not go unnoticed. The doorman is the first to greet visitors and serve as the best representation of the Swiss tradition of service. Their gear resembles the Appenzell costume designed by Ida Gout and the delicate brooch designed by goldsmith Sebastian Fassler shows a lot of care and thought for the kind of service they want to bring. The hotel itself also makes use of Appenzell design, the town famous for its mountain range. One must also have the Swissötel traditional cake with its notable ingredient of ground hazelnuts. Experiential for all senses that pull focus on their attention to what matters. The Spa: Swissötel Clark will launch their spa and Vitality suites soon. Every one of their six private suites will have its own gym equipment for guests to enjoy their fitness regimens in private. Swiss mindfulness podcasts, the Vitality kit, wellness treatments, and menus round out the entire experience for a great session. Outside, on the other hand, lets guests exercise with fresh air on bike and jogging paths as part of the hotel’s promotion of a healthy environment. I’m hearing that one of the managers hails from a 5-star hotel in Mandaluyong with a very good spa, who is also a professional therapist with a good grasp of wellness and treatments — a lot of which they can do themselves, so consider my expectations high. [caption id="attachment_148665" align="aligncenter" width="525"] VITALITY suite[/caption] Great food, comfortable rooms and fresh air for all — they did not miss a beat when it came to bringing Swiss hospitality to the country, even down to the finest details. Taking a trip up north to Pampanga is a great way to retreat from the city for a bit, made even better if you’re staying at Swissötel Clark. Six new K-romances on Netflix
Audiences worldwide have been growing fonder of K-romance, and this affection shows no signs of fading. Between 2018 to 2022, global viewership of Netflix’s K-romance titles tripled. In 2022 alone, more than 90 per cent of this viewing came from outside South Korea. As the home of compelling K-romances, Netflix is introducing six new Korean romance series over the upcoming five months. Here’s a sneak peek at what these new shows have to tell. See You in My 19th Life (premiering 17 June) In this spinoff from a hit webtoon, Shin Hye-sun stars as a heroine who can remember all her past lives. As a young girl in her 18th life, she falls for a thoughtful boy next door. In her 19th life, she tries to make her way back to him, only to find he has become a cold man who doesn’t want to get close to anyone. Can love triumph across lifetimes? He meets a girl whose bright smile is part of her job — in one of his family businesses. He immediately dislikes her, writing her off as someone who hides her true self behind a fake smile. Former global K-Pop idols Jun-ho and Yoona team up for the first time as actors in this much-anticipated “enemies to lovers” K-romance. Behind Your Touch Rom-com queen Han Ji-min plays a veterinarian in a small town who has a very strange gift of psychometry. When she convinces a detective of her abilities, they team up to solve neighborhood crimes. [caption id="attachment_141488" align="aligncenter" width="525"] JANG Shin-yu and Rowoon in ‘Destined With You.’[/caption] Destined with You K-romance powerhouses Cho Boa and Rowoon (also a K-Pop idol) combine their star wattage in this sweeping saga. Rowoon plays a hotshot lawyer who has it all but is haunted by a family curse. And it turns out that the woman who is key to breaking this curse is none other than the seemingly ordinary civil servant played by Cho. A Time Called You (premiering in third quarter of 2023) Ahn Hyo-seop (from Business Proposal) and Jeon Yeo-been (from Vincenzo) star in this remake of classic Taiwanese romance Someday or One Day. Jeon’s character travels back in time to 1998 and meets a man played by Ahn, who bears an uncanny resemblance to her late boyfriend. Each lead takes on the challenge of playing two characters who look identical, but have completely different personalities — and all the complications that create when it comes to love. Doona! (premiering in fourth quarter of 2023) A college student (Yang Se-jong) navigates life and school while dealing with a unique predicament — he's living with a former K-Pop sensation, played by real-life former K-Pop star Suzy. Their relationship starts out as one of mutual misunderstanding and dislike, and grows over time into one of love and trust. But can their connection withstand the cruel pressures of fame? Designed by the chefs of Center for Asian Culinary Studies led by chefs Gene and Gino Gonzalez, local foodies can expect an array of dishes from comfort food to all-time favorite snacks, as well as selection of handcrafted beverages like blended coffee drinks and classic cocktails. Dishes include Truffle Fries, Mozzarella Sticks, Chorizo Chisu Croquettes and Nachos made from premium stone ground chips with sour cream, salsa cruda, cheese sauce and ground beef. Even the popcorn at Cinema ’76 Café is not your run-of-the-mill movie snack with distinctive flavors like Truffle Caramel, Smoked Ribs and Cheddar. [gallery columns="2" size="large" ids="138986,138988"] Chef Gene recommends the sandwich selection inspired by some of TBA Studios’ beloved historical films: Luna (chicken tocino with salted egg relish and tomatoes), Del Pilar (adobo flakes, cream cheese with pickled onion) and Quezon (chicken inasal, tomatoes with creamy béchamel sauce). Other delectable dishes include Margherita Soup, Steak and Fries Seared Salmon served with thick-cut fries and the TBA Studios Box-Office Pasta, an extra virgin olive oil-based chorizo pasta with sun-dried tomatoes, toasted bell peppers and shimeji mushrooms. [gallery columns="2" size="large" ids="138989,138984"] Cinema ’76 Café first opened in Anonas in June 2021. While the Anonas branch has permanently closed, the new location in Tomas Morato makes it even more accessible for film enthusiasts and foodies alike.
