‘Largest pot in history of Philippine golf’ up for grabs at 100th Solaire Philippine Open

Some of the Philippines and the world’s top golfers are set to converge in Sta. Rosa, Laguna for the 100th edition of the Philippine Open golf tournament, sponsored by Solaire Resort and Casino. The four-day tournament, which kicks off on February 28th at The Country Club in Sta. Rosa, will be the centennial edition of the Philippines’ top golf championship. “This is the fourth time that Solaire is sponsoring the Philippine Open, the country’s premier championship, and Asia’s oldest national open,” said Solaire Resort and Casino President and COO Thomas Arasi at the Solaire Philippine Open press conference held Tuesday morning. “But this sponsorship will be a special one since as the Open will be holding it’s 100th tournament.” As historic as the upcoming tournament will be, it will be even more enticing for the competitors, as the 2018 Philippine Open will feature over half a million US dollars in prize money. “This year’s total prize money for the Solaire Open is at $600,000 USD,” Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. General Manager Colo Ventosa revealed at Tuesday’s presser. “This is the largest pot in the history of Philippine Golf, the Philippine Open, and we expect to lure at least 132 players, from abroad and locally as well.” Among those 132 competitors will include a handful of former champions, including the Philippines’ own Miguel Tabuena, who won the tournament back in 2015. “Our defending champion from 2017, Steve Lewton will be here to defend his title. We also have another past winner, Mardan Mamat from Singapore, he was the winner in 2012. We have Marcus Both from Australia, 2014 winner, of course we have Miguel Tabuena as well, and we also invited Miguel Angel Jimenez.” Ventosa added. Decorated Pinoy bet Tony Lascuna will be gunning for this year’s crown after England’s Steve Lewton won it all in 2017. “Masakit sa aming mga Pinoy kung iba yung nananalo kasi yun yung malaking tournament sa Pilipinas.” Lascuna told ABS-CBN Sports. “Ngayon, may Philippine Tour, malaki yung tulong, tinutulungan every year na mag-improve lahat ng Pilipino. Ngayon, may chance kami.”.....»»

Claudia Barretto and Juliana Gomez Got Selfies With Brooklyn Beckham

Last night, a small crowd(or maybe big, what do we even use as scale?) formed at Bonifacio High Street as Brooklyn Beckham dropped by the Bench Flagship Store. As people cheered and took photos of him, our local celebrities were also excited to meet the brand's newest ambassador. Inside the store, guests were treated to a shopping party filled with upbeat music and samples from the newly-opened Bench Caf. What stood out for me was thesisigwrap with tangy calamansi foam and the pandanmojito---both of which had unexpected tastes. (Note to self: Come back to try more dishes.)Richard Gomez and Lucy Torres-Gomez were some of the many people who were sipping on cocktails and trying the snac...Keep on reading: Claudia Barretto and Juliana Gomez Got Selfies With Brooklyn Beckham.....»»

Papa Bear Benjie Paras leads first PBA 'Homecourt' visit

PBA fans in three Metro Manila barangays got the surprise of their lives Thursday following the unannounced visit made by Hall of Famer Benjie Paras, Beau Belga of Rain or Shine, and Magnolia’s Rodney Brondial. The three players were accompanied by officials and staff of the PBA led by Officer-In-Charge Willie Marcial during their personal appearances in Barangay Marilag, Project 4 in Quezon City, and Barangays Jesus dela Pena and Tanong in Marikina as part of the new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program of the league dubbed ‘PBA Homecourt.’ Belga and Brondial went along with the group as part of their community work after being fined by the Commissioner’s Office for various infractions just before the holiday break. Under the league’s new CSR setting, players are given the chance to write off minor fines through appearances in basketball courts within the metropolis. On the other hand, Paras, the only player to become Rookie-MVP in a season (1989), volunteered to go doing the rounds of barangays as a way of giving back to PBA fans. “Masarap at magaan sa pakiramdam na makita mong napapasaya yung mga fans, especially yung mga bata,” said Belga, who did his share of taking selfies, photos, and autograph signings during the event. A shoot around was held in all three barangay courts, with fans who made the basket receiving gift items, basketball, and select tickets from the PBA. League stickers were also attached to the barangay courts visited by the group. Marcial said the event will be held every other Thursday, or on Saturdays when no out of town games are scheduled. And like in its initial staging, the tour will be held unannounced. “Mas maganda yung ma-surprise mo sila,” said the league OIC.  .....»»

Kobe Paras upbeat about the Gilas Pilipinas 2023 squad he ll eventually lead

If you ask Filipino forward Kobe Paras to describe what all the early developments for the Gilas Pilipinas squad for the 2023 FIBA World Cup make him feel, you'll get one word: Happy. Paras, who was one of the more prominent names among 23 young players listed by the Philippine national basketball team head coach Chot Reyes to be part of the early training pool, expressed his approval of the group of guys, even if some are visibly left off of the list because of their commitment to other squads. "I’m happy with the group of guys. I know there are a lot of guys that aren’t on the list," Paras said in an interview with Steve Angeles of ABS-CBN News North America during the Los Angeles Clippers' Filipino Heritage Night. "It makes sense if they’re not on the list because of their teams or whatever rules but I’m happy with it."  One player who fit that bill was De La Salle University's flashy forward Ricci Rivero, who was left off the list after his school urged its players to focus on their rebuild next UAAP season. Even then, the 6'6" Paras, who's more or less baptized by Coach Chot to be destined to be the face of the nationa team sounded both honored and excited about his inclusion to the squad, who'll represent the Filipino tricolor five years from now, as the Philippines co-hosts the international basketball meet with Indonesia and Japan. "I’m happy that coach picked me as well. I love representing my country so I’m just really happy that he chose me for that," said the U.S.-based Paras. "I saw the other day they practiced." Aside from local, homegrown talents included in the "#23for23" pool like Thirdy Ravena, CJ Perez, Robert Bolick, and Isaac Go, a couple of Filipino-Americans also made the list. Remy Martin, a rookie point guard for the Arizona State Sun Devils, and Dwight Ramos from the California State-Fullerton Titans, were names present in the preliminary pool. As a fellow Pinoy cager in a foreign land, Kobe is nothing but eager to meet, and eventually play his contemporaries. "I haven’t talked to Remy [Martin] or what’s his name from Fullerton...Dwight [Ramos]," Kobe said. "I think I’m going to play him too. I gotta talk to Dwight but I’ve seen Remy play. I need to talk to them though. Because we’re representing L.A. and the Philippines so it’s going to be cool."  Here's the full video interview of Kobe Paras:  .@_kokoparas enjoyed being at .@LAClippers Filipino Heritage Night and he also expressed his happiness about being on SBP #23for23 He hopes to also speak to .@3wight and .@1Remy_Martin1 soon 🇵🇭🏀🌊 .@abscbnsports .@ABSCBNNewsSport .@ABSCBNNews pic.twitter.com/e8GcUq1Luf — Steve Angeles (@StevieAngeles) January 9, 2018.....»»
