Toast to the return of Grand Wine Experience
In wine pairing, the generally accepted rule is that reds are to be paired with “dark” food like red meat, while whites are ideal with light fares like fish and salads. “It’s still a good rule – white with white, red with red,” said Ronald Lim Joseph, director of Finance and Operations of Ralph’s Wines and Spirits and a veritable encyclopedia of wine varieties. “But the rule now is to pair bodies with bodies – so, white wine with delicate flavors, medium-bodied with medium flavors and so on.” The Joseph brothers and some of their children, with supportive spouses, of course, once again hosted a lively lunch to launch the 20th Grand Wine Experience at the newest and biggest brand of Ralph’s, located at Mitsukoshi Mall in BGC. This outlet serves Italian and Japanese fare that one may pair with any of the wines from Ralph’s. “Has it been 20 years?,” I asked a similarly awestruck Melissa de Leon-Joseph, Ron’s wife. “We started out with just maybe a few hundred varieties of wines,” she mused. Today, one of the grandest of Food and Beverage events in the country has evolved into “more than just a wine and spirits event. It is a celebration of life, a toast to the future and a tribute to the past. It is a symbol of resilience, of how we can overcome adversity and emerge stronger and better,” the event originators declare in a statement. On its 20th year, the event will, indeed, be “more special,” Ron says. “Every year, we try to introduce new wines from new regions, from the regions that we bring in. This year, expect new wines from Portugal, Israel and new regions from Italy. We want our friends to discover new places and new flavors.” The last Grand Wine Experience was held in 2019, but the pandemic prevented them from holding it in the succeeding three years. The theme then was “Generations,” a nod to winemaking as among the oldest trades in the world. “It’s passed on from generation to generation. This year, we want the new generations to join.” This year’s theme is “Bud Break, which captures the essence of renewal and optimism,” adds information from Philippine Wine Merchants. Bud break, PWM adds, “is the first stage of the grapevine’s annual cycle, when the dormant buds burst into life and produce new shoots. It is a critical time for the vineyard, as it determines the potential yield and quality of the grapes. It is also a beautiful sight, as the green leaves contrast with the brown branches and create a stunning landscape.” Just like this blossoming season, Grand Wine Experience returns to bring back a sense of appreciation for all the good things in life that people missed over the course of the pandemic. [caption id="attachment_186637" align="aligncenter" width="2008"] PHOTOGRAPH BY DINAH VENTURA FOR THE DAILY TRIBUNEthe Philippine Wine Merchants leaders (from left): Robert Ian Joseph, director for Sales and Marketing; Raymond Joseph, president and CEO;Ralph Joseph, Rea Joseph- Gonzales, Rafael Joseph, director of Finance and Operations Ronnie Joseph and Sales executive Redmond Joseph.[/caption] Drink to be merry The Grand Wine Experience promises more of what regulars have come to expect of the event. On its much-awaited return, “the largest and most prestigious event of its kind in Southeast Asia, featuring over 1,000 wines, spirits, sakes and beers from around the world, curated by experts and presented by renowned winemakers and distillers” will no doubt welcome more of the new generation of Filipino wine and spirits market. More to watch out for are the “exquisite dishes prepared by top chefs to complement the libations,” surely a sensory delight from the chefs of Marriott Manila. The 20th Grand Wine Experience will take place on 17 November at the Marriott Grand Ballroom. The doors will open at 5 p.m. and the event will last until midnight. Tickets are limited and have always sold out fast, so don’t miss this chance to experience some of the finer things in life. “We drink to be merry, not to get drunk,” quips the Josephs, once again reiterating that the best part of celebration is enjoying the food and drink, but more so the company and conversation. Carmela Geisert holds second solo exhibit
Self-taught artist and hotelier Carmela Geisert mounts her second solo exhibit at the Redwood Cafe and Artspace in Quezon City. Curated by Professor Ruben DF Defeo, In Reverie runs from 2 September to 4 October and showcases a collection of abstract paintings that explore the realms of daydreaming, positivity and personal introspection Geisert’s artistic journey is an exploration of emotions translated onto canvas. In Reverie captures the essence of positive energy and introspection through an array of colors and forms. Each canvas becomes a portal into a world where colors are felt as much as they are seen, evoking a sense of serenity and connection with the inner self. Her artistic process is an intimate dance between intuition and expression. Her paintings are a result of instinctual gestures and emotional impulses, giving rise to colors that seem to emanate from her very being. Her canvases come alive with stream-of-consciousness compositions that playfully incorporate foliage and forest scenes, fluid experimentations and line-scribbled glimpses into mythology, creating a balance between the organic and the abstract. Geisert enjoys inspiring moments of dreamy contemplation in the lush greenery and proximity to the beach in Palawan and elsewhere. As she gathers her memories of travel, photography, fashion and leisure, she fills her canvases with instinctual gestures often reflecting her moods and meandering thoughts. She started sketching using charcoal and pastel crayons in 2016 to pass off the time during long-haul flights, her portraitures and human figures sketches characterized by confident lines. She also found her way naturally to creating “fluid art,” mixing acrylic paints to create interesting random patterns that follow the character of the paints that she pours on the canvas. Geisert has been recognized by her alma maters — PATTS College of Aeronautics with an Outstanding Alumni award in 2017 and Colegio de Santa Ana with an Outstanding Alumni award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship and in Fine Arts in 2020. The Redwood Café and Artspace is located at Unit 104, Cedar Executive Building, 26 Timog Avenue, Quezon City. For more information, contact Carmela (0917-5507374), Micki (0918-6979226), Jes (0927-8524116) and Redwood Cafe (0917-1386881). The exhibit is for the benefit of the Iraya Mangyan community of Mindoro. The post Carmela Geisert holds second solo exhibit appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

From Korea with love
South Korean love stories are currently playing in theaters. Take your pick between the art-house romantic drama Past Lives and the commercial romantic-comedy Honey Sweet. [caption id="attachment_178877" align="aligncenter" width="1729"] TEO Yoo and Greta lee in 'Past Lives.' | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF A24[/caption] ‘Past Lives’ When Hae-sung (Teo Yoo, Decision to Leave) booked an Uber to the airport with his great love Nora (Greta Lee, The Morning Show) by his side, he pinned the pick-up location a little farther away from Nora’s New York apartment because, maybe, he does not want Nora’s husband Arthur (John Magaro, First Cow) to see them at their most vulnerable state. Celine Song’s directorial debut Past Lives explores one of the greatest conflicts in any love story: Forbidden love. Hae-sung is in love with Nora, but Nora is married to another man. But does Nora feel exactly the same way about Hae-sung? Are they truly meant for each other? For Nora, is Hae-sung “the one that got away”? Song uses ambition, personal values, a buffering Skype, geography and cultural identity to keep her characters apart and to justify why the two are not together. Her style is slow burn and restrained, but sometimes too self-consciously restrained that even moments that require emotions are neglected. This film is too terrified to express the slightest hint of melodrama that it forgets that the characters are still human. When Song puts Nora and Hae Sung together for lengthy sessions of eye contact or speechlessness, it is tensionless. She also neglects body language. Meanwhile, the poor husband Arthur is too kind and understanding that he comes off as bland and predictable. The writing lacks the kind of depth and wit that the film tries too hard to express. At the core the story is the Korean inyeon, or the concept of two people tied together through each reincarnated life, hence the title. But the narrative just hinges on this belief without exploring the richer nuances of true love and attraction. It’s a one-dimensional tale of a guy in love and a girl who may or may not be in love with him. The ending, however, is powerful and heart-wrenching, and answers all the emotional ambiguities of the story, ultimately redeeming the entire movie. What a terrific twist, even if it’s still ultra-restrained. Rating: 3 out of 5 stars ‘'Honey Sweet' Lee Han’s romantic-comedy is the go-to foreign flick if you need something light and entertaining to unwind in the theaters. It’s a working-class love story between two forty-somethings: the pretty single mother Il-Young (Kim Hee-seon) and the not-so-handsome snacks researcher/taster Chi-Ho (Yu Hae-jin). Honey Sweet uses slapstick and gags to tickle your bones. But the selling point here is the strong chemistry between the two leads. You root for them, these two lonely people who meet each other a little late in life. It is a formulaic love story: meet-cute, dating, break-up, and a happy ending. Still, what makes Honey Sweet a charming, endearing time-killer is how it skillfully captures the emotional bond between two people falling in love. The conflict is convincing, and some of the best scenes are when the two are separated for a while, essaying the seemingly boundless pain of a break-up. Meanwhile, the villain, Chi-ho’s cruel older brother, Seok Ho (Cha In-pyo), provides the movie’s much needed tension and distress. While the movie is incredibly shallow, it still provides romantic subtleties and character idiosyncrasies, making it an engaging watch all throughout. He is an introvert; she is an extrovert. He is malnourished; she is a good cook. The film manages to utilize their contrasting personalities and interests for fun and entertainment. Honey Sweet explores how some people do not realize how lonely they are until they meet the right one. Before meeting each other, Chi-Ho and Il-Young have seemingly resigned to their mundane routine. But once romance sparks between them, they take the viewers along with them as they embark on an emotional adventure — and it’s kinda sweet. Designer Jie -jie Aisa on muse Nikki de Moura
So far, the city of Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao has produced two beauties of international caliber: Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and Miss InterContinental 2021 Cinderella Faye Elle “Cindy” Obeñita. Hoping to make it a Beauty Queen Trinity is Nikki Advincula de Moura, the newly crowned Miss Grand Philippines who will compete for the global title in Vietnam come October. [caption id="attachment_173643" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Miss Grand Philippines 2023 Nikki de Moura, wearing a terno by Jie-jie Aisa, in front of the Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral in Cagayan de Oro. | Photograph Courtesy of James Paculba.[/caption] There are great expectations that De Moura, who is of exquisite mix of Brazilian and Filipino blood, will finally snatch the elusive Miss Grand International crown. Helping her to achieve this feat is her glam team from Cebu and her beauty camp in her native CDO. At the national finals, De Moura wore a creation by Eclectic Image Fashion Studio by Jie-jie Aisa for the national costume competition. It was called “Oportunidad de Oro” or “Golden Opportunities,” inspired by the city’s mythical golden fish which is believed to be its protector. It was one of the top five in the category. For her homecoming after her victory, De Moura once again wore a Jie-jie Aisa creation. “The gown beautifully blends two symbolic colors — green, representing unity and #KaubanTaUY, and gold, paying homage to CDO’s renowned title as the City of Golden Friendship,” the designer noted. “A true embodiment of grace and local pride, Nikki shines bright during her homecoming motorcade, capturing hearts of Kagay-anons and embodying the essence of this remarkable city. Thank you to LGU-CDO headed by Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy for making this possible.” Incidentally, the bustling city is in the midst of celebrating its Higalaay Festival, a major highlight of which is the Mindanao Fashion Summit from 23 to 25 August at the Ayala Centrio Mall. As the president of the Designer’s Assembly, Jie-jie will lead his group’s presentation on the second day, 24 August. “As the president, my key duties and responsibilities encompass leading and guiding the organization’s strategic direction, fostering a collaborative environment among budding designers, overseeing project initiatives, coordinating events and workshops and representing the interests of our members within the design community,” the genial designer said. “I am dedicated to ensuring the growth and success of our group by nurturing creativity, facilitating skill development and promoting meaningful engagement within the design industry.” On the eve of the 12th Mindanao Fashion Summit, the designer, who considers Gil Macaiba III, the late Benjie S. Manuel and Cary Santiago as influences, recounts his collaborative relationship with his muse, De Moura. Origins “My acquaintance with Nikki de Moura developed through mutual connections within the fashion and pageant industry. Our paths crossed after a local beauty camp in Cebu City introduced her to our camp in Cagayan de Oro City, the #TeamAmega. Since I am the official designer of our beauty camp, I had the opportunity to design her creative national costume as well as her outfits during her homecoming. “The idea of a creative collaboration for her gowns/outfits emerged organically from recognizing the synergy between our camp’s visions, we jointly initiated the collaboration, fueled by a shared passion for crafting unique and captivating ensembles that would resonate with her style and my design expertise.” Muse “Nikki exemplifies the essence of a stunning Jie-jie Aisa muse through her remarkable blend of grace, confidence and distinctive style. Her ability to effortlessly carry both traditional and contemporary ensembles reflects the dynamic spirit of the Jie-jie Aisa brand. Nikki’s poise and fashion-forward sensibilities resonate with the brand’s commitment to celebrating cultural heritage while embracing modern aesthetics. As a local fashion designer, collaborating with such a muse has been an inspiring journey, elevating my creations to new heights of elegance and sophistication.” Collaborations “Throughout the collaboration between myself as a local fashion designer and Nikki, we found common ground in our enthusiasm for integrating indigenous design elements into the collection. However, there were nuanced differences in our visions, particularly concerning the color palette’s vibrancy and the extent of embellishments. By fostering open dialogue and embracing a spirit of mutual respect, we arrived at a compromise that elegantly balanced the client’s preference for a more subdued palette with my inclination for bolder accents. This harmonious negotiation resulted in a collection that seamlessly reflects both Nikki’s refined taste and my artistic perspective.” Pride “I am immensely proud of Nikki’s accomplishments, both as Miss Teen Philippines 2019 and more recently as Miss Grand Philippines 2023. These achievements reflect not only her individual dedication and perseverance but also the embodiment of our nation’s beauty, talent and grace on esteemed platforms. Nikki’s success brings honor not just to herself but also to the Philippines, and it is a privilege to have contributed to my journey as a local fashion designer. Her victories inspire me to continue creating designs that complement and enhance the remarkable qualities of individuals like Nikki.” Preparations “From our perspective, the entire #TeamAmega is wholeheartedly committed to providing unwavering support to Nikki during her time in Vietnam. As for her national costume, we are awaiting confirmation from the Miss Grand Philippines Organization regarding my potential involvement in designing her ensemble. Rest assured we are eagerly prepared to contribute our expertise to ensure her representation is nothing short of exceptional.” Challenges “As a designer, crafting pageant gowns presents a unique set of challenges that require a delicate balance between artistic expression and meeting specific criteria. Ensuring that the gown captures the contestant’s individuality while aligning with the pageant’s theme and standards demands meticulous attention to detail. “Additionally, incorporating elements that reflect cultural authenticity and modern aesthetics requires thoughtful navigation. The challenge lies in harmonizing these diverse aspects to create a gown that not only enhances the contestant’s beauty and confidence but also makes a lasting impression on the judges and audience.” “Working with beauty queens brings its own distinct dynamic compared to designing for everyday women. Beauty queens possess a heightened sense of stage presence and a requirement for gowns that accentuate their elegance under the spotlight. The meticulous attention to fit, silhouette and materials is magnified.” The post Designer Jie -jie Aisa on muse Nikki de Moura appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Carloto presents a poignant scene of a makeshift street-side store, a testament to resilience and resourcefulness amidst urban landscapes, while Sena’s depiction of residue from the continuing saga of online shopping extravaganzas delves into the intersections of consumerism and modern life. San Diego’s Strong Girl Era exudes freedom, empowerment, and resilience, while Tabije’s contemporary Genie in the Bottle explores the power of wishes and the complexities of desires contained in a crushed PET container. Valdemoro paints a hefty heavenly body perched on a laborer’s tired shoulders in Dagdag, striking a powerful chord on the burden and grace found within everyday struggles while questioning divine guidance. Emirati astronaut captures image of Taal Volcano from space
Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi shared on social media a breathtaking aerial view of Taal Volcano which he photographed from space. "Hello, Philippines! I captured this image of Taal Volcano, one of the smallest volcanoes in the world and the 2nd most active one in the Philippines, from the ISS (International Space Station)," he wrote in the caption. "The deeper we look at Earth from space, the more we understand its unique geographical diversity," he added. Taal Volcano has been described by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) as "very small but dangerous". It has had several violent eruptions in the past, causing deaths on the island and the populated areas surrounding Taal Lake. Meanwhile, Al Neyadi, who is entering his final weeks on the ISS, is one of the first two astronauts from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He became the first Arab to perform a spacewalk. Top French photo fest shows unseen work by US legend Saul Leiter
A host of never before seen work by the late great US artist Saul Leiter is being showcased at one of the world's biggest photography festivals in France. Almost all of the paintings and drawings in the major Saul Leiter show at the "Rencontres d'Arles" festival in the southern French city have never been shown before. A former fashion photographer, Leiter -- who died in 2013 -- was a leading light of the New York school of photography of the 1940s and 1950s that included Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, and Robert Frank. Curator Anne Morin called him "one of the 20th century's most fascinating artist-photographers". "Everything is a matter of balance, exactitude, and humility in the works of this man, who nonetheless accorded great importance to imperfection," she said. In a short film presented at the show, Leiter said "You don't have to apologize" for looking for beauty. While summer temperatures outside soared well above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), the mercury hovered at around 20C in an underground exhibition space called the "cryptoportiques" where merchants once stored their wares in Roman times. Fittingly, it is hosting images of prehistoric caves at Arcy-sur-Cure in central France taken by French photographer Juliette Agnel. Drops of water occasionally oozed into the cryptoportiques, bringing to life the humidity pictured in the caves. The photos had to be covered with a fine film to protect them from the moist conditions, festival director Christoph Wiesner told AFP. Agnel illuminates only some parts of the caves in her photos, which show imaginary creatures and play on light and darkness in the manner of Old Masters like Rembrandt and Goya. The work "explores extreme environments, whose unsettling beauty provokes senses of wonder and feelings of the sublime", wrote curator Marta Ponsa. Scandinavian sisterhood In a nearby centuries-old cloister, the Camargue, France's largest wetland located next to Arles between the Rhone River and the Mediterranean, takes pride of place in an exhibition by France's Eva Nielsen with Marianne Derrien. "Insolare" captures the Camargue's reeds, marshes, the action of salt on the land, agricultural activity, and local architecture in paintings, silk-screen prints, and photography. Wiesner said the Camargue was "particularly exposed" to climate change, with Nielsen describing the location as "at once wild and fashioned by man". The sweltering temperatures of southern France take a dive into the chillier climes of Scandinavia with the exposition "Sosterskap" ("Sisterhood"), which highlights work by 18 women photographers who explore the welfare state from a feminist perspective. Fathers on paternity leave caring for their children, handcuffed women looking towards the future, and women of immigrant backgrounds, the latter by Nairobi-born Sweden-based artist Ikram Abdulkadir, feature in the displays. The curators highlighted the feeling of sisterhood in the work by young Finn Emma Sarpaniemi, whose self-portrait was selected as the festival's banner photo. Senators ponder new “Love the Philippines” slogan
Senator Nancy Binay on Wednesday expressed hope that campaigning for the country’s newest tourism slogan “Love the Philippines” will work out. In a statement, Binay lamented that rebranding initiatives, such as replacing the country’s tourism slogan, always have corresponding costs. Binay, who chairs the Senate Committee on Tourism, Cultural Communities, and Social Justice, said it would entail a considerable amount of money “to start and sustain a new campaign.” “Sa dami ng mga kailangang nating unahin at i-prioritize na pagkagastusan (with numerous priorities and other important matters we have to allocate our funds to), we don't have sufficient funds to finance a re-brand,” Binay said. According to Binay, accepting the new slogan is the only option left. “Kaso, nandyan na nga 'yan. 'Ika nga, 'pag love mo ang isang tao o bagay, tatanggapin mo anuman 'yung kanyang kakulangan, and willing ka pa rin bigyan ng chance—with the hope na mag-work out (The new slogan is already there. As they say, when you love someone or something, you accept their shortcomings and are still willing to give them a chance, with the hope that it will work out), ” she added. On Tuesday, the Department of Tourism officially replaced the "More Fun in the Philippines" slogan as it bared the country’s "enhanced" tourism slogan "Love the Philippines.” Senator Francis Escudero said the new slogan launched by the DoT is worth giving a chance as the Marcos administration strives to attract more international tourists in order for the country to recover economically from the effects of the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Escudero urged the Filipinos to support the new tourism campaign instead of throwing outright criticism. "The last thing I want is for our country and people to be seen bickering about our slogan in front of foreigners/tourists--our putative market. I refuse to be part of any such thing until we have given it a chance,” he said. Escudero cited how the previous campaign "It's More Fun in the Philippines,” launched in 2012, worked well for the country, generating more than 8.26 million tourist arrivals in 2019—just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Philippines in early 2020. This doubled the 4.47 million tourist arrivals in 2013. "While I believe in the saying 'if it ain't broke, why fix it?' I am willing to give it a chance," he said. He added that a slogan's effectiveness depends on many factors, such as the destination's unique offerings, target audience, and marketing strategy. Escudero assumed that Philippine tourism officials and partner agencies have taken into account the qualities of a good tourism slogan which should be “catchy, memorable, and convey a positive message that captures the essence of the destination.” "My personal favorite is 'Incredible India. This slogan, for me, works well because it is simple, memorable, and accurately captures the essence of the destination it represents,” he said. At the launching, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said his administration is adamant about “propelling the tourism industry forward by embracing the warmth of our people, the beauty of our land, and the rich tapestry of our culture.” The post Senators ponder new “Love the Philippines” slogan appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Two Friends, Loud Luxury in Powerhouse Collab ‘If Only I’ With Bebe Rexha
Acclaimed producer/DJ duo Two Friends and diamond and multi-platinum selling dance music duo Loud Luxury release their latest single, “If Only I”, with award-winning pop singer Bebe Rexha on Helix Records/Armada Music. Two Friends’ massive 30-plus date Planet Two Friends North American headline tour is currently underway, stopping at iconic venues such as Forest Hills Stadium in New York. Electro-pop queen Bebe Rexha’s smooth vocals paired with the carefully-crafted beats of Two Friends and Loud Luxury make for a dance music fan’s dream: a true powerhouse collaboration. The candy-colored music video captures the feel-good essence of the track as the collaborators take on the California coast with special guest influencer Hannah Stocking. In April, Two Friends delighted Coachella fans with the first live performance of “If Only I,” bringing out collaborator Rexha for a special appearance. Loud Luxury also gave it a similar, special pre-release treatment, closing out their set at the EDC Las Vegas mainstage with a fireworks-filled high tempo rendition. The new single follows Two Friends’ recent collaboration with multi-platinum country singer Russell Dickerson in “More Than Yesterday.” Slowly beginning with Dickerson’s rich vocals over acoustic plucking, the song steadily progresses, building instrumental and electronic beats and culminating in a powerful, danceable chorus featuring drums, synths and a catchy trumpet hook. Two Friends earned a coveted Vegas residency at the Wynn’s XS & Encore this summer, and the second annual edition of their very own festival, Big Bootie Land, recently took place in Chicago. The official Planet Two Friends headline tour continues through July, concluding at New York City’s Forest Hills Stadium on 8 July. Two Friends will return to their hometown later this summer to play LA Historic State Park with The Chainsmokers, ARMNHMR and NOTD. MAVEN captures stunning ‘tie-dye’ views of Mars
NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft orbiting Mars got stunning 'tie-dye' views of the Red Planet in two ultraviolet images. According to NASA, MAVEN took the first image in July 2022 during the southern hemisphere’s summer season, while the second image was taken in January this year after Mars had passed the farthest point in its orbit from the Sun. "MAVEN has a special instrument that lets us see Mars in ultraviolet wavelengths called the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph, or IUVS. Viewing the planet with IUVS can give us insight into the atmosphere on Mars and let us see surface features in remarkable ways," the American space agency said. In the first image, Mars looks like it has been dyed in soft, muted yellows, greens, and purples, NASA described. "The southern polar ice cap is visible at the bottom in white, shrinking from the relative warmth of summer," it added. On the other hand, the planet's colors in the second image are more vibrant. Its atmospheric ozone appears magenta while clouds and hazes look white and the rest of the region is mostly green. "We can’t see ultraviolet wavelengths with our eyes, so these images are rendered with the varying brightness levels of three ultraviolet wavelength ranges represented as red, green, and blue," NASA said. beep powers QR payment in LRT1, enhancing commuting experience
AF Payments, Inc., the operator of the beep card, is pleased to announce the successful launch of Maya’s and Light Rail Manila Corporation’s (LRMC) QR payment system in LRT1. This new and convenient payment option—which is enabled by beep’s technology—was warmly received by train commuters, who can now effortlessly purchase QR codes through their smartphones. “The overwhelming adoption of QR since the service’s launch demonstrates commuters’ willingness to embrace more diverse payment options that facilitate faster and more convenient commutes. Alongside the tap-in and tap-out functionality of beep cards, QR offers an excellent alternative to Single Journey Ticket users, allowing them to skip the lines and enjoy faster travel times. The core mission of AF Payments, Inc. is to provide commuters with convenient, fast, and secure payment solutions, transforming daily commuting into a more efficient, productive, and pleasant experience for everyone,” says JJ Moreno, the president & CEO of AF Payments, Inc. Making payments via QR is made incredibly simple by following these steps: 1. Open your Maya app and navigate to the Services section. 2. Select the LRT-1 tile under the Lifestyle category. 3. Choose your desired route (Northbound or Southbound) and set both the origin and destination. 4. Click on Pay Now. Your QR ticket will be instantly generated. 5. Scan your QR ticket using the turnstile QR scanners at LRT1 stations. LRT1 QR tickets, which will be valid for 24 hours, may be conveniently purchased through the Maya and LRMC’s ikotMNL apps, and eventually through the beep app. The LRT1 trains cater to passengers from Monumento to Baclaran. “Fast lane” turnstiles with QR readers are located in all LRT1 stops, including Balintawak and Roosevelt stations along EDSA. “AF Payments remains committed to providing innovative enabling technologies to projects that enhance the commuting experience of Filipinos. We strongly believe that Filipino commuters deserve nothing less than the best and latest micropayment solutions that cater to their evolving needs,” Mr. Moreno added. The recently launched QR ticketing setup at LRT1 was based primarily on the QR Code Application for Transport (QCAT) format, an open-source set of specifications and documents published by AFPI that defines a QR code-based ticketing system applied to different modes of transportation. QCAT defines the structure and format of the QR Code payload of a ticket. The QR ticket is generated and issued through a mobile-based application and is then scanned and validated as trip fare media or ticket. A backend repository captures these QR ticket transactions and are processed, cleared, and settled based on agreed business rules between the QR ticket issuer, acceptor, and transport operator. Before its introduction in the rail sector, QCAT was successfully applied in both bus transport (with the BGC Bus network in Taguig) and inter-island ferry terminals (with Topline Express Ferry in Cebu). These two transport use cases replaced the manually validated paper ticketing process to ensure quicker validation and a hassle-free commuting experience. With QR ticketing based on the QCAT format, passengers are given another cashless option for a fast, seamless, hassle-free, and convenient commuting experience. Here Comes the AI: Fans rejoice in ‘new’ Beatles music
When the Beatles broke up more than 50 years ago, devastated fans were left yearning for more. Now, artificial intelligence is offering just that. From "re-uniting" the Fab Four on songs from their solo careers, to re-imagining surviving superstar Paul McCartney's later works with his voice restored to its youthful peak, the new creations show off how far this technology has come -- and raise a host of ethical and legal questions. "I'm sobbing! This is so beautiful!!!" wrote a listener in a typical YouTube comment for a fan-created AI cover of McCartney's 2013 single, "New," which features de-aged vocals and a bridge part "sung" by his great songwriting partner and friend, the late John Lennon. Equally impressive is a version of "Grow Old With Me," one of the last songs penned by Lennon, which was posthumously released after his 1980 murder and recently remade by an AI creator who goes by "Dae Lims." With enhanced audio quality, an orchestral arrangement and harmonized backing vocals that evoke the Liverpudlian rockers' heyday, the song's most stirring moment comes when McCartney croons over a soaring melody with poignant lyrics about aging. "When I hear this, I lose it. I start crying," said music YouTuber Steve Onotera, who goes by "SamuraiGuitarist" and has a million followers, in a recent video discussing the new works' unforeseen sentimental resonance. After the most influential band in history parted ways acrimoniously, fans were deprived of a final "happy ending," he said. "So when we do get that reunion artificially yet convincingly created by AI, well, it's surprisingly emotional." AI here, there and everywhere Like an earlier track called "Heart on a Sleeve" which featured AI-generated vocals of Drake and The Weeknd and racked up millions of hits on TikTok and other platforms, these covers use scraping technology that analyzes and captures the nuances of a particular voice. The creators would have probably then sung the parts themselves and then applied the cloned voice, in a manner similar to placing a filter on a photograph. While the results can be astonishing, getting there isn't simple and requires skilled human operators combining new AI tools with extensive knowledge of traditional music processing software, Zohaib Ahmed, the CEO of Resemble AI, a Toronto-based voice cloning company, told AFP. "I think we're still seeing a very small percentage of the population that can even access these tools," he said. They need to "jump through hoops, read documentation, have the right computer, and then put it all together." Ahmed's company is one of several offering a platform that can make the technology more accessible to clients in the entertainment sector -- and counts a recent Netflix documentary series "narrated" by late art icon Andy Warhol using its technology as an early success. For Patricia Alessandrini, a composer and assistant professor at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, the recent spate of AI tracks represent a coming-of-age for a technology that has been advancing exponentially -- yet largely out of public view over the past decade. "This is a great example of what AI does very well, which is anything that's resemblance: to train it on something existing," she told AFP. But, she added, it flounders when it comes to new ideas. "There's really no expectation that it's going to replace the rich history of humans originating art and culture." Litigation coming For the music industry, the ramifications are enormous. As the technology progresses, software that will easily allow people to transform their vocals into one of their favorite singers is likely not far away. "If they're getting paid for their vocal license, hey, everyone's happy," said Onotera. "But what if they're long since passed away? Is it up to their estate?" AI is already proving a helter-skelter impact on the copyright world. In the case of "Heart on a Sleeve," Universal Music Group was quick to assert copyright claims and have the track pulled down from streaming services, but that hasn't stopped it popping back up on small accounts. Marc Ostrow, a New York-based music copyright lawyer, told AFP AI-generated music is a "gray area." Copyright can be asserted both by songwriters whose material is used, as well as the holders of the master recordings. On the other hand AI creators can argue it falls under "fair use" citing a 2015 court ruling that said Google was permitted to archive the world's books, because it wasn't competing with sellers and was displaying only snippets. Last month, however, the US Supreme Court tipped the balance back the other way in ruling a Warhol print of the late pop star Prince violated the copyright of the photographer who took the original image. Add to the mix that celebrities can protect their likeness under the "right to publicity," established when Bette Midler successfully sued Ford Motor Company in the late 1980s for using a singer that sounded like her in an ad. Ultimately, "I think there may be voluntary industry standards... or it's going to be done by litigation," said Ostrow. Rights holders will also need to think about the negative PR that could come with suing over works that are clearly fan-created tributes and not intended to be monetized.
