Duterte jokes: I should have used Villar’s ‘Sipag at Tiyaga’ instead of ‘DDS’

MANILA, Philippines ---President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said he should have used former senator Manny Villar's famous slogan "Sipag at Tiyaga" instead of "DDS" during the 2016 presidential elections. "His (Villar) sipag at tiyaga--- dapat ito sana ang ginamit ko sipag at tiyaga--- nagkamali kasi ang mga PR (public relations team) ko, DDS, Davao Death Squad," Duterte said in jest in his speech at the birthday celebration of the former Senate President in Las Pias City. (I should have used his 'Sipag at Tiyaga.' My PR team made a mistake--- DDS, Davao Death Squad) Villar ran for President in 2010 with the campaign battle cry "Sipag at Tiyaga." He was beaten by Duterte's prede...Keep on reading: Duterte jokes: I should have used Villar’s ‘Sipag at Tiyaga’ instead of ‘DDS’.....»»

UAAP Finals: In showing character, UP earns Ateneo s respect

Ateneo de Manila University left no doubt in claiming back-to-back championships in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament. Following a convincing nine-point victory in Game 1, the Blue Eagles ran the University of the Philippines out of the Araneta Coliseum in Game 2 on Wednesday by a score of 99-81. That 18-point win was more than enough for them to clinch their seventh title in the last 11 years. Despite the dominant series sweep, the now two-time defending champions had nothing but good words for their fallen foes. “At the end of the day, yes, there’s only one champion, but there are only two teams that play the last game of the season. That means the one that doesn’t win still must’ve done a lot of things pretty well,” head coach Tab Baldwin told reporters post-game. Indeed, while Ateneo was in complete control of the Finals, Fighting Maroons Bright Akhuetie, Paul Desiderio, and Juan Gomez de Liano kept coming at them. In the eyes of coach Tab, that just showed the character they have discovered and then developed throughout the tournament. “When you look at their season, their season had a lot of character to it because they were a struggling team early on and looked out of sorts. It’s really difficult so you scratch your head all the time and say, ‘We got talent, we got some good players, how do we pull this thing together,’” he shared. He then continued, “I don’t know what they did, but they sure got it together and they got these guys playing as a team, playing extremely hard, and they put together a great season.” At the start of the second round, UP found itself at 3-5 and at the outside looking into the playoff picture. From there, though, they went 7-1 to make a run to the Finals which was a pleasant surprise for just about everybody. And though the Fighting Maroons had to settle for a runner-up finish, the Blue Eagles said they deserve nothing but respect for their magical season. “I think that you got to give credit to every single one of them. The coaches obviously did a good job and the players worked with the coaches so they deserve credit for that,” coach Tab said. He then continued, “They were a really tough opponent for us.” --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Folayang’s birthday wish? The ONE lightweight world title

MANILA, Philippines – Much like any adult busy grinding with work, Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang probably had to postpone his birthday celebration for another day. That’s because the Team Lakay stalwart, who turned 34 years old on Thursday, November 22, still has a lot of work to do the very next ........»»

ONE Championship: Eduard Folayang Wants To Celebrate His Birthday With A World Title Win

With his highly-anticipated encounter against Singapore’s Amir Khan for the vacant ONE Lightweight World Championship set to take place a day after his birthday, local hero Eduard “Landslide” Folayang cannot think of a better present for himself than to have a gold-plated belt wrapped around his waist once again. The Filipino superstar will celebrate his 35th birthday on Thursday, 22 November, a day before his scheduled five-round championship bout with Khan in the co-main event of ONE: CONQUEST OF CHAMPIONS, which emanates from the 20,000-capacity Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila. “There’s no greater gift I can receive on my 35th birthday other than winning the ONE Lightweight Word Title back,’’ he expressed. “And there’s no better place to do it but in front of my countrymen.” After relinquishing his lightweight crown to Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen in November 2017, Folayang immediately went back to the drawing board to check where things went wrong. He amazingly worked his way back to the upper echelon of the talent-filled lightweight division — first dominating Kharun Atlangeriev in three rounds last May, and then edging out Aziz Pahrudinov in a 15-minute thriller two months later. The Baguio City native treats the opportunity of reclaiming the ONE Lightweight World Championship both as a reward and vindication. “There were some who doubted my decision to continue fighting after the knockout loss to Martin Nguyen nearly a year ago. After two wins in ONE Championship, I am back in the title picture,” Folayang stated. “I feel very fulfilled because I made the right decision to compete again. Also, my hard work has paid off. It will be a great birthday present for me to bring home the belt again. It's an added motivation going into the bout against Amir Khan.” Even if he is pegged as the heavy favorite to win the bout against the Singaporean, Folayang stressed that he is not taking his opponent for granted. Khan holds the exceptional records for the most wins (11) and finishes (10) in ONE Championship, scoring impressive victories over the likes of Bashir Ahmad, Jimmy Yabo, Jaroslav Jartim, and Sung Jong Lee. The 24-year-old phenom is coming off the biggest win of his promotional stint yet, submitting Folayang’s Team Lakay stablemate Honorio “The Rock” Banario with a first-round rear-naked choke this past September. “Landslide” knows the Evolve MMA representative poses a dangerous threat, but he is confident of his chances. “He is young and talented. I am also sure that he is hungry,” Folayang said.  “There is no room for complacency in this match. Of course, the momentum is on my side, but I plan to sustain it. I started the year with a win. I followed it up with another big win. The timing speaks for itself.” In his return to the global stage, Folayang boldly predicts that fans in attendance at the Mall Of Asia Arena will witness the coronation of a fifth Filipino mixed martial arts World Champion on Friday. “2018 has been a very good year to me,” he continued. “After November 23, I’m confident that the Philippines and Team Lakay will have another new world champion in the sport.”.....»»

ONE Championship: Kevin Belingon vs. Martin Nguyen for interim bantamweight title set for Manila in July

ONE Championship’s July card in Manila will be getting a big-time main event, as Team Lakay knockout artist and top bantamweight contender Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon will be taking on reigning ONE Championship Featherweight and Flyweight World Champion Martin ‘The Situ-Asian’ Nguyen for the Interim ONE Championship Bantamweight World Champion. ONE Championship CEO and Chairman Chatri Sityodtong made the announcement on his Facebook page, Thursday afternoon.  Currently riding a five-fight winning streak, Baguio City’s Belingon (18-5) is considered by many as the number one contender to the ONE Championship Bantamweight World Title, currently held by Brazilian submission specialist Bibiano Fernandes. After losing to Fernandes back in 2016, Belingon clawed his way back into the title picture by going on an impressive winning run including dominant stoppage wins over Toni Tauru and former title contenders Reece McLaren and Andrew Leone. A win over Nguyen will finally give Belingon the ONE title that he’s longed for, as well as securing his spot once again as the next to challenge Fernandes, ONE Championship’s longest-reigning world champion. (READ ALSO: With title shot in mind, Kevin Belingon says Martin Nguyen can wait.) Following a successful defense of his featherweight crown against Christian Lee, the 11-2 Nguyen drops back down to bantamweight and will try to get another chance at becoming a three-division world champion. After capturing the featherweight and lightweight belts back in 2017, Nguyen kicked off 2018 with a title shot against Fernandes in Bangkok, Thailand. While Nguyen pushed the champion to the limit, at the end of five rounds, Fernandes once again reigned supreme as he defended his bantamweight title for a record seventh straight time. Roughly two months removed from his last bout, Nguyen jumps back straight into the title picture to challenge Belingon for the number one contender spot. The Belingon-Nguyen blockbuster bantamweight title bout will serve as the headliner for ONE Championship’s third of four trips to Manila in 2018. As announced by Sityodtong, the card will also feature MMA legends Renzo Gracie and Yuki Kondo in a retirement match, as well as former champion Shinya Aoki taking on Thai star Shannon Wiratchai.  Former ONE Championship Lightweight world champion and Filipino MMA star Eduard Folayang has also been announced for the card.  ONE Championship: Reign of Kings will Friday, July 27th at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City......»»
