ONE Championship: Four World Titles make Team Lakay’s Christmas special this 2018

Christmas is one the biggest holidays in the Philippines. Incomparable to other countries, Christmas lights and holiday jingles start to play as early as September.   People from all walks of life gather on this special occasion and celebrate the holiday with food, drinks, and by spending time with friends and family.   Members of Team Lakay, the country's most renowned mixed martial arts group, have its own way of holding an annual celebration for the Yuletide season.   Housing four ONE World Champions such as Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon, Geje Eustaquio and Joshua Pacio, the Baguio City-headquartered camp holds a yearly Christmas party in mid-December to cap off the year.   "We have an early celebration coming up this Saturday, 15 December. We are going to have a beach house party in San Juan, La Union," Eustaquio shared.   "The gathering will celebrate our accomplishments this 2018, and also prepare for 2019. Everybody will come that day, most notably our professional athletes.”   Their way of celebration is not like any other party as it involves honoring their native tradition with a sumptuous feast and holding insightful talks for the advancement of their athletes’ career.   "We have a program, a feast, and an open mat for whoever wants to roll. Our world champions will share their experience and tell what they went through this year," Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao bared.   "This kind of gathering is our way to spend quality time with each other. This is our way to inspire other athletes, tighten our bond, and learn from each other.”   Finishing their campaign with four gold-plated belts under the ONE Championship banner, Sangiao believes that 2018 is Team Lakay’s most successful year since its inception in 2003   “It’s our biggest year. We won championship titles and received many awards this year. This is the result of our hard work, dedication, and sacrifice,” the Team Lakay headmaster said.   “Like we always say, this is our passion. We love what we do. These awards and titles are just the fruit of our hard labor.”   Although Team Lakay hauled all the titles, recognition and accolades that they could possibly get in 2018, all that matters to them is seeing each individual with gleeful smiles on their faces by the year's end.   "We are grateful for every year. We are always full of joy,” Eustaquio stated. “Seeing each other happy, seeing everyone living a peaceful life is more than enough.”.....»»

ONE Championship: Flyweight champ Geje Eustaquio sees future career in mountain biking

Mountain biking first started for Geje "Gravity" Eustaquio as a hobby, but his enthusiasm for the extreme sport eventually turned into passion.   The reigning ONE Flyweight World Champion from Baguio City was first introduced to the thrill of bike rides by his Team Lakay comrade Edward Kelly.   Like many other athletes who go to extreme lengths in an effort to bolster their respective strength and conditioning programs, Eustaquio supplements his martial arts training with white-knuckle rides in nature.   He and his teammates frequently take their mountain bikes through the challenging off-road terrain of Baguio City’s lush forests together.   "I think mountain biking is the perfect cross-training. First of all, it develops balance. It also enhances your decision-making as well," Eustaquio shared.   "We also develop our cardio by doing this. It helps all of us stay in shape while having fun. Riding bikes is a great workout.”   Eustaquio and company go mountain biking in Baguio City once a week during training camps, and ride up to three times a week when a bout is not scheduled.   The area where they typically ride is blessed with incredible natural beauty – mountains, rivers, and amazing wildlife that populates the landscape.   While the group typically follows cross-country trails over wild terrain, they are familiar with their surroundings, so their pursuits are usually pretty safe.   “When we ride, it is an adrenaline rush. We love conquering trails, and at the same time, it gives us access to the most wonderful creations of God,” he stated.   Despite his newfound love for bike rides, there is no denying that Eustaquio's focus and priority is still mixed martial arts as he eagerly awaits the phone call for his next world title defense.   Eustaquio puts mountain biking on the backseat for now, but he affirmed that it could very well end up as a career when it is time to call it a day in mixed martial arts.   "It is not the same with mixed martial arts. I can't give my whole time in mountain biking yet,” he mentioned. “Maybe when it's time for me to retire, I might do professional mountain biking or motocross.”.....»»

ONE Championship: A win away from a second title run, greatness once again within reach for Eduard Folayang

Eduard Folayang’s mixed martial arts career can best be described as ‘up-and-down.’ Throughout his eleven year career as a professional MMA fighter, Folayang has reached the highest of highs and has fallen to the lowest of lows, and his current run in ONE Championship is no different. In 2016, following a run that saw him go 6-3 in the promotion, Folayang reached pinnacle of his career after dethroning Japanese MMA legend Shinya Aoki to become the ONE Lightweight World Champion. Another high in the career of the Baguio City native, who many considered to be the face of Philippine MMA at that point. Then, a year later, as the trend in his career goes, Folayang was knocked off from his spot at the top and was sent crashing down courtesy of a right hand from Martin Nguyen. Just like that, Folayang was again in a valley. The 35-year old is no stranger to adversity. He was able to rise back up in 2016, and now, he’s done just that again. A little over a year after losing the belt to Nguyen in Manila, Folayang gets a shot at history, but more importantly, he gets a shot at redemption. At ONE: Conquest of Champions in Manila, Folayang has the opportunity to become a two-time world champion when he meets Singapore’s Amir Khan for the vacant ONE Lightweight World Champion. If Folayang pull it off, he becomes the first two-time ONE Lightweight World Champion in the promotion’s history. If Folayang pulls it off, he recaptures the crown in the very same arena that he lost it in, just twelve months prior. “Siyempre masayang-masaya ako, kasi it took me one year ulit para maka-balik sa title picture, and pinag-hirapan naman natin,” Folayang told ABS-CBN Sports. “We faced two undefeated Russians and naging dominant naman yung performance natin, and for sure, napaka-exciting yung magiging laban na ito, especially since tinalo ni Amir Khan yung teammate natin na si Honorio Banario, so it will be a good fight for both of us.” Folayang knows all too well how his career has gone, and the former Wushu standout says that in order to be able to keep moving forward, one must not keep himself in the past. Whether wins or losses, “Landslide” says that he does not dwell on them too much. “Hindi tayo nagde-dwell sa past, kasi kung magde-dwell ako sa mga past victories tsaka mga defeat, parang hindi ako magmo-move on.” “ Kaya dun natin na-aappreciate ang martial arts, it’s really a journey kung saan sasabihin natin na tapos na tayo or na-achieve na natin yung highest na standard kasi in some ways, we will win some and some ways we will lose, pero  yung napaka-ganda doon ay kapag natatalo tayo, mayroon at mayroon tayong chance para ayusin yung areas na nagkamali tayo at magkaroon ng chance para manalo ulit and as much as possible maibalik natin yung nawala sa atin,” he continued. As far as second chances go, Folayang has had his fair share. Now, he gets another chance at being the top lightweight in the promotion, and he believes it’s all because he never quit, even after all the adversity he has faced in his career. “Yun yung pinaka-masaya dito sa pagiging isang martial artist, we are given a second chance as long as we are breathing and as long as we never give up.” Folayang’s road back to the championship picture took him a little over 365 days. In that period, Folayang proved that he was still a top-tier lightweight after defeating a pair of undefeated Russian grapplers in Kharun Atlangeriev and Aziz Pahrudinov. When Martin Nguyen vacated the belt back in September, immediately, Folayang was in the front of the line in terms of contenders. In that 12-month period, Folayang admits that it wasn’t the easiest. Having to deal with such a loss and then having to work your way back isn’t a walk in the park. But the former champion believes that it was necessary for him to go through that in order to evolve even more. “Yung journey, every day talaga, kailangan mo din mag-struggle, mag-struggle na kung saan you will always aim to improve, you will always aim to learn kung ano yung strengths and weaknesses ng kalaban mo until you will go on that day na parang mag-eexam ka ulit and you will see na if you have improved after a year or not,” he shared. 378 days removed from his title loss, Folayang gets to test himself again, and if he passes, he becomes the top dog in the lightweight division. “Yung pinaka-test ko ulit after losing that belt is this coming November 23, and I’m excited going into that battle again. Sana maging two-time world champion.” Very rarely do fighters go undefeated in their professional careers, and they say that the true test of a champion is how he or she bounces back from adversity or defeat. Time and time again, Folayang has managed to bounce back. When people thought that he would never reach the top, he proved them wrong by becoming a champion. When people thought that he was done, he again proved them wrong by being where he is now. It’s through these kinds of struggles, Folayang says, that one learns about himself. It’s this kind of pressure that molds one to become a champion. “I believe na nakakatulong din [yung mga setbacks], although as much as possible din, ayaw natin ng ganun,” he said. “Pero siguro sa buhay hindi mo talaga masasabing upward palagi yung improvement, minsan talaga madudulas ka para makita mo yung space kung saan mag-iimprove ka pa, and makikita din talaga natin na everyone is improving, hindi lang tayo yung nag-iimprove tapos tapos na, no. “Everybody is chasing greatness, and kapag nagkamali tayo, maabutan tayo, pero we need to come up stronger ulit,” he added. At ONE: Conquest of Champions, Folayang once again finds himself one win away from a second run as the ONE Lightweight World Champion. Once again, greatness is within reach for Eduard Folayang.   Eduard Folayang meets Amir Khan for the vacant ONE Lightweight World Championship at ONE: Conquest of Champions this Friday, November 23rd at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. Catch the action LIVE on ABS-CBN S+A channel 23 beginning at 8:30 PM! .....»»

ONE Championship: Danny Kingad motivated by friend Joshua Pacio s title win

In August of 2017, Team Lakay strawweight star Joshua Pacio hit a bump on his road back to title challenger status.  Pacio was fresh off a fantastic unanimous decision win over former champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke, and looked to continue his momentum by taking out then-newcomer Hayato Suzuki in Macau.  The larger Suzuki instead overpowered Pacio en route to a submission win in the first round.  It was a tough pill to swallow for Pacio, who suddenly saw his hopes of fighting for a world championship once more get derailed.  Consoling him every step of the way was his Team Lakay brother and training partner Danny Kingad, who wasn't booked to fight on the card, but was there to help his buddy out.  It was a testament of just how close these two young guns from Baguio were.  Fast-forward over a year later, Pacio had finally earned another shot at the ONE Strawweight World Championship, and he was able to capture it by beating Yoshitaka Naito in the main event of ONE Championship: Conquest of Heroes in Jakarta, Indonesia.  Just as he was there in the tough times, Kingad was also there in what is the pinnacle of Pacio's career so far. Kingad was also victorious earlier that night, defeating Japanese newcomer Yuya Wakamatsu via unanimous decision.  But as happy as he was with his own victory, it seemed like he was even happier for his training partner's title win.  "Yun yung hinihintay ko," Kingad said with a smile. "Kasi bago kami nung nag-debut, yung gusto naming dalawa yung kami lang dalawa, kaya ayun, natupad din, talagang binigay ni God yung panalo." Considered by many as the futures of Philippine MMA, Pacio and Kingad, both 22 years old, made their ONE Championship debuts back on the same card in 2016. Since then, the two have put their respective divisions on notice.  Kingad has also challenged for a world championship once before, but then-champion Adriano Moraes made quick work of the young Team Lakay star.  Now, with his training partner ruling over the strawweight division, Kingad says he's more motivated than ever to get back to title contender status.  "Very happy ako kay Joshua, kasi yung pagka-bata niya pa, nakuha na niya yung belt." Kingad shared. "Parang na-motivate ko na mag-training ng mag-training."  Kingad is currently riding a three-fight winning streak of his own, and says he's targeting a matchup against former flyweight title holder Kairat Akhmetov, who was also victorious in Jakarta against China's Ma Hao Bin.  A win over Akhmetov certainly puts him back into contender status.  Ruling over the flyweight division, however, is another one of Kingad's teammates in Geje Eustaquio.  Kingad has already made it clear that out of respect, he won't be fighting his senior. "Syempre, di ako papayag na kalabanin ko siya. Senior ko siya eh," Kingad said. "Bago pa man ako pumasok sa ONE, andun na siya na tinuturuan ako. Parang malaking respeto ko na lang sa kanya 'yun, kasi pag wala siya, di ako makaka-aral ng techniques sa kanya." .....»»

Baguio Boys: MMA champ Eduard Folayang reconnects with high school friend and star boxing trainer Marvin Somodio

After spending the last month or so training at the Jackson-Wink MM Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, former ONE Championship Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang made a quick stopover in Los Angeles, California, before finally heading back to the Philippines, Tuesday.  While in Los Angeles, Folayang was able to reconnect with an old high school friend in former boxer-turned-coach Marvin Somodio.  Like Folayang, Somodio is a native of Baguio City.  "Sobrang saya ko na nakita ko si Marvin kanina." Folayang shared with Steve Angeles of ABS-CBN News. "Naalala ko nung nasa high school kami, naglalaro siya ng boxing and I’m playing Sepak Takraw, and you never imagine that in that long period of time, there are a lot of changes," Fun fact: before becoming an MMA star and Wushu standout, Folayang's first sport was Sepak Takraw.  Somodio did go on to become a professional boxer, but his career lasted just three fights, two wins and one loss. He eventually found his calling as a trainer and began in Baguio City. Now, Somodio is the chief assistant trainer in Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California.          View this post on Instagram                   Hitting some mitts with @marvinsomodio in @wildcardwest @tristeezy_mma @bviloria @jayanthony714 @the.landslide #growing #learning A post shared by Eduard Landslide Folayang (@the.landslide) on Sep 17, 2018 at 12:36pm PDT "Ang maganda dun, we follow what we love, we follow the passion that we love, and now we met each other having the same passion." said Folayang.  Both Folayang and Somodio have found success in their respective fields of combat sports, with Somodio being a trainer to world champions in boxing, while Folayang having established himself as the face of Filipino MMA.  "Yung makikita mo siya na very successful, makikita ka niya na successful din, dito pa sa America, iba yung pakiramdam."
