CAAP reported that potential airport closures include Tuguegarao, Basco, Itbayat, Cauayan, and Palanan. Airports in Laoag, Vigan, and Baguio are also preparing for harsh weather conditions. In a progress report by Area 2 Manager Mary Sulyn Sagorsor to CAAP Director General, Capt. Manuel Antonio Tamayo, all flights at Tuguegarao, Cauayan, Palanan, and Basco Airports are canceled. Area 1 Manager Ronald Estabillo reported that the Laoag International Airport flight of Cebu Pacific (Mnl-Lao-Mnl) 5j404 had 94 affected passengers, while flight 5j405 had 69 passengers affected due to flight cancellation. Complaints mar first day of international flights transfer
The Philippine Airlines disclosed on Friday that it has received numerous complaints from passengers going abroad due to the alleged cancellation of their flight schedule without notifying them. This comes on the first day of the transfer of all PAL international flights to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 from Terminal 2, where the cancellations occured simultaneously. According to some affected passengers, the reason given by PAL for the cancellation of their flight was due to aircraft maintenance. PAL, on the other hand, released a statement saying that they recently encountered flight cancellations primarily due to the increase in the number of aircraft on preventive maintenance as a result of high utilization brought about by revenge travel or high travel demand. “In essence, the rise in aircraft maintenance is a direct result of increased aircraft utilization driven by high travel demand in recent months. Consequently, some aircraft require preventive maintenance earlier than scheduled, and unforeseen maintenance issues arise, impacting our flight rotations,” said PAL in its statement. Meantime, during the ocular inspection at NAIA Terminal 1, Manila International Airport Authority officer-in-charge Brian Co said that he will have a meeting with airline companies to resolve the issued regarding on the delayed and canceled flights. Co also mentioned that about 40 international flights or about 6,000 passengers will be added to NAIA Terminal 1 per day during the transfer of all remaining international flights of PAL from NAIA Terminal 2 to Terminal which started on Friday. Radar system maintenance successful — CAAP
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines on Wednesday reported that the corrective maintenance of the country’s radar system on Wednesday was “successful” with no flight disruptions during the activity scheduled from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. It disclosed that the corrective maintenance at the Philippine Air Traffic Management Center, which seeks to replace the uninterruptible power supply and upgrade the air traffic management system, was finished in an hour and 13 minutes. CAAP also said that no disruptions were reported but it can be recalled that Clark International Airport earlier said four regional flights were affected by the scheduled maintenance while AirAsia Philippines announced the cancellation of six domestic flights and the retiming of two flights set on 17 May. The activity had no impact on flight operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and normal operations resumed at 3:20 a.m. Manila’s Runway 13/31, which enables other means of communication between pilots and the Control Tower, was utilized during the maintenance activity. The Philippine Airlines reported that all its scheduled flights via Manila were able to land and depart during the system maintenance. Meanwhile, CAAP said continuous monitoring and finetuning of the Communications Navigation Surveillance Systems and Air Navigation Service are being undertaken to ensure the unimpeded operations of airports throughout the country. “CAAP extends its appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of various aviation stakeholders, highlighting the importance of seamless air traffic management in compliance to the highest standards of safety and efficiency,” it said. Student-athletes helping out in pandemic emulate UAAP values
UAAP officials lauded the student-athletes of member schools for their initiative to actively extend help to those in need during this coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Since the start of the community quarantine, athletes in their own capacity organized and joined fundraising drives, distributed personal protective equipment and other essentials to medical and security frontliners, handed out relief goods to affected communities and even served as frontliners. “Allow us to emphasize lang na wala kaming inutusan sa mga ‘yan. Nagugulat na lang kami na it's very voluntary,” said UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag on Tuesday during the online session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum. “These are student-athletes na nag-aaral, naglalaro but at the end of the day when the nation calls for it in a broader spectrum of life they were able to respond,” added Saguisag, who was joined by Season 83 President Em Fernandez of Ateneo in the in the session presented by San Miguel Corporation, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Amelie Hotel Manila, Braska Restaurant, Go For Gold PH and powered by Smart. Basketball stars including Ricci Rivero of University of the Philippines, Mike and Matt Nieto and Thirdy Ravena of Ateneo, Rhenz Abando and CJ Cansino of University of Sto. Tomas, Encho Serrano and Justine Baltazar of De La Salle University and women’s cager Jack Animam of National University were among those who participated in fundraising drives and donated relief goods to vulnerable communities. Animam’s teammate Ria Nabalan served as a frontliner as a Philippine Navy personnel. Active volleyball players joined former UAAP volleyball stars in various jersey auctions and fund-raisers while other student-athletes from different sports disciplines, including fencer Maxine Esteban of Ateneo did their part to help. “We have a lot of student-athletes who have been helping in their own capacity. We have athletes from the tennis community, athletes from the volleyball community and athletes from the fencing community who have been helping everyone. Even internally, we have athletes in the dorm who have been helping out with the relief efforts of Ateneo,” said Fernandez talking about Ateneo athletes’ efforts. “Just to cite, the athletes of Adamson who are still in the dorm of Adamson are helping out the communities outside,” he added. Despite being affected by the pandemic themselves especially with the cancellation of Season 82 and the possibility of pushing back the opening of Season 83 to early next year, the officials gave praise to the student-athletes for their actions amid this trying time. “It’s reflective of the values taught by each member institution and I guess the value of the UAAP wants to share. We’re all in this together,” said Saguisag. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
Marano on beast mode in delivering relief goods to affected volleyball game personnel
Aby Marano once again unleashed her beast mode. Not on court, of course, because we’re still under community quarantine and volleyball action is still far from its resumption with the current situation of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This time, the national team skipper strapped on her seatbelt and went on a three-day relief run in cities within Metro Manila and nearby provinces to deliver relief goods for volleyball match-day personnel affected by the COVID-19 crisis. The F2 Logistics star brought the food packs, groceries and essentials bought from the funds collected in the fundraising event organized by the Volleyball Community Gives Back PH to the homes of volleyball personnel whose source of income was halted after the cancellation of volleyball leagues including the NCAA, UAAP, the Philippine Superliga and the Premier Volleyball League. Marano posted a video of her delivering the goods on her YouTube Channel. She drove to Sta. Maria and Bocaue in Bulacan, Cavite and around Metro Manila, bringing help to technical officials, referees and court assistants. The VCGBPH over the weekend held a fund-raising event where volleyball stars showcased their off-court talents online in the SERVE AS ONE Variety Show. The organization has been very active in its relief efforts since the outbreak of the contagion as they donated personal protective equipment (PPEs), face masks, alcohol, disinfectants and goods to frontliners as well as extended help to families in vulnerable communities. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
Volleyball Community Gives Back PH to hold SERVE AS ONE Variety Show
Volleyball Community Gives Back PH has something to serve up for those matchday personnel affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Charo Soriano, who is one of the VCGB PH leaders, is looking forward for two memorable fun days from the sport's biggest stars through the SERVE AS ONE Variety Show. A fundraising effort for volleyball personnel presented by Volleyball Community Gives Back PH, the show is scheduled on June 5 and 6, 7:30 p.m. on the ABS-CBN Sports Website, ABS-CBN Sports Facebook Page and ABS-CBN Sports YouTube Channel. "Time and time again, the Philippine volleyball community has exemplified solidarity in the face of various adversities - from community development, natural disaster responses, relief operations and more recently, distribution of PPEs to different provinces. Everyone helps out. And people - players, coaches, management, staff, officials, and fans - all do their part," said Soriano. Last month, the #CARINGFORALL: Down The Line, We Are One was launched to provide assistance for the paid-per-day personnel, as any help will go a long way. As of last Friday, VCGB PH was able to provide 200 care packs to volleyball personnel all over Metro Manila. The group hopes to raise funds and provide care packs to be distributed for more volleyball personnel families affected by the postponement and cancellation of volleyball leagues. Help is on the way and Kiwi Ahomiro, who recently lent her hand in delivering PPEs to the Philippine Army, is more than ready. "We wanted to reach out and help our volleyball personnel and staff and all those who made our games possible - bouncers, ball retrievers, referees, technicians all those whose livelihoods have been threatened due to COVID-19 so we came up with the idea of putting up the SERVE AS ONE Variety Show. All proceeds will go to the care packages for their families," said Ahomiro. Aby Maraño, who was involved in distributing the second wave of care packages, saw the hardships of the matchday personnel. "Our volleyball officials and personnel felt really sad about the fact that volleyball will stop for the next month cause volleyball from most of them is the only source of income they have. I learned that they started small businesses like selling sweet Pinoy desserts, some are selling peanut butters and garlic spicy sauce only to sustain their lives amidst the pandemic situation," said Maraño. Also taking part in handing out the care packages was Amanda Villanueva, who hopes that the help will go a long way to boost the spirits of the volleyball game's unsung heroes. "In these trying times my main motivation in helping our dearest group of volleyball personnel is the vision of hope that everything will eventually come to an end. To let them know as well that we are in this together and that nobody gets left behind in life whichever direction life leads us because we are one community and we strive to help each other in whatever way we can. To stand together as one family not just on the court but also outside of the court," said Villanueva. It may still a long way to go but Alyssa Valdez believes that the volleyball community will be in the same page to keep the personnel afloat in this challenging time. "The fight is far from over, we’re like in a championship situation, like 14-14 all, fifth set. We need one another to be able to win this fight! So I’m inviting everyone...let’s go help serve and win as one," said Valdez. Donations can be sent to Ryan Sordan through BPI bank account 8069 0632 77, GCash at 0917-5003390 and PayMaya at 0917-5003390. Meanwhile, a total of 2,081 protective personal equipments (PPEs) was distributed by the VCGB PH in the #ServeOurFrontliners: RAFFLES FOR HEROES fund drive for the medical frontliners who are doing a valiant battle against coronavirus. VCGB PH was already able to donate 310 PPEs to Sultan Kudarat, 220 to Quezon Medical Center, 301 PPEs to Batangas, 200 to Aklan, 100 to Puerto Galera, 200 to Cebu, 250 to Northern Mindanao Medical Center, 300 to National Children’s Hospital, 100 to Army, 50 to Navy and 50 to Maysan Health Station.
