Popoy and Basha singing Ben& Ben? ‘One More Chance’ to become a PETA musical
Before the emergence of hugot and modern love in Filipino films, an entire generation of Filipinos bawled their eyes out as Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz threw heartbreaking lines against each other and tried mending their broken relationship in the Cathy Garcia-Molina film One More Chance. Now the classic film will become a musical courtesy of the stalwart theater group Philippine Educational Theater Association, which announced on 22 October, during the closing night of its latest musical Walang Aray, that it was developing the material into One More Chance, The Musical. What’s more, the upcoming show opening in April 2024 at the PETA Theater Center will use the music of Ben&Ben, one of the country’s most popular contemporary bands, adding another layer of pop relevance to the production. Gio Gahol and Marynor Mademasila, who acted as star-crossed lovers in Walang Aray, a modern adaptation of Severino Reyes’ classic sarsuwela Walang Sugat, teased the announcement of the new production by recreating an iconic scene from the Star Cinema movie. Then out came Ben&Ben who performed their hit songs “Kathang Isip” and “Araw-Araw,” throwing the closing-night crowd into a frenzy. Following Walang Sugat’s successful run, PETA made its upcoming production social media-official. “Natapos man ang love story ni Tenyong at Julia, simula naman ng kwento nina Popoy at Basha. Kamay sa dibdib, mga mangingibigs! WALANG AARAY dahil muli tayong IIBIG sa susunod na handog ng PETA…” said its post, along with a photo of Ben&Ben surrounded by the Walang Sugat stellar cast. PETA has produced over 500 plays in the last 55 years, among them the acclaimed musicals Care Divas, Three Stars and a Sun and Rak of Aegis. One More Chance is in good hands with PETA as it transitions into a brand-new musical that can bring devotees of the beloved movie as well as a new generation of fans into the theater. CA junks hazing accused’s inhibition plea
The Court of Appeals has denied the plea of one of the accused in the fatal hazing of University of Santo Tomas freshman law student Horacio Castillo III seeking to compel Regional Trial Court of Manila City Branch 20 acting presiding judge Shirley Magsipoc- Pagalilauan to inhibit from the case. In a 75-page decision promulgated on 22 September 2023 and written by Associate Justice Rafael Antonio Santos, the appellate court’s First Division held that the claim of Ralph Trangia that the judge acted with grave abuse of discretion in refusing to inhibit has no basis. The CA also did not give weight to Trangia’s claim the alleged failure of the judge to address the issues he raised in his demurrer to evidence shows that she would not be able to decide with utmost partiality. It added that after a careful review of the record of the case and the applicable laws and jurisprudence, it finds that petitioner failed to prove his allegation that the court committed grave abuse of discretion when it denied his motion for inhibition. “Rather it is evident that petitioner’s claim of bias and partiality is merely based on the denial of his Demurrer to Evidence, which in itself is not sufficient to prove that the court a quo acted with bias, bad faith, malice, or corrupt purpose,” said the CA’s decision. “For these reasons, the Court rules that petitioner miserably failed establish that the court a quo acted with manifest impartiality in issuing the assailed Orders,” it added. In denying Trangia’s demurrer, the Manila RTC in an order dated 4 February 2022 held that the evidence presented by the prosecution established all the elements of the offense of hazing as well as the presence and participation of all accused, including petitioner, during the hazing of Castillo by members of the Aegis Juris Fraternity. To recall, Trangia — one of the accused in the death of Castillo — has sought the inhibition of Pagalilauan at the CA on the ground of alleged partiality in denying his motion for demurrer evidence last 24 February 2022, which seeks the immediate dismissal of the case on the ground of insufficiency of evidence. On 10 March 2022, the respondent judge issued an order denying Trangia’s motion prompting the latter to move for the reconsideration of the said order but the same was denied on 28 March 2022. This prompted Trangia to elevate his plea before the CA arguing that Pagalilauan committed grave abuse of discretion amounting to lack or excess of jurisdiction in denying his motion for inhibition and the subsequent motion for reconsideration considering that she showed partiality in denying his demurrer to evidence despite clear showing that the prosecution failed to prove its case against him. Invasive species on the menu at London restaurant
A London restaurant is exploring whether eating invasive species such as grey squirrel, American Signal crayfish and Japanese knotweed could help fight their spread, but scientists remain skeptical. The idea behind several "invasive species supper clubs", the last of which was served on Tuesday at "zero waste" Silo restaurant in east London, is to "creatively popularize species that are detrimental to the environment", chef Douglas McMaster, who runs the establishment, told AFP. The omnipresent grey squirrels, signal crayfish and Japanese knotweed are all "forces of destruction" that squeeze out local populations, but all are edible and "delicious", he added. The invaders are the subject of a recently published report under the aegis of the UN, which gave rise to calls from experts to "wake up" to the "scourge". McMaster would like a legitimate supply chain and for the species to become "an accessible resource" for chefs. But the idea "isn't to popularise these invasive species so there's so much of a demand that we allow them to become more invasive", he stressed. "That would be a terrible thing to occur." He hopes instead to "bring back balance within the ecosystem and then we stop eating them". - 'Out of control' - But experts fear that the remedy will simply aggravate the problem. "Consuming invasive non-native species isn't something that I would encourage," Karim Vahed, professor of entomology at the University of Derby, told AFP. For Signal crayfish, which were imported in the 1970s for human consumption before escaping to colonize waterways -- to the detriment of the native white-clawed crayfish -- "there's a potential that people will even introduce them themselves if they think that they can then be collected as food". The invasive specimens also transmit a fungal infection, "crayfish plague", to which the American species are immune. And their few predators -- otters and herons -- are too few to stem their spread. "At the moment, the Signal is just spreading out of control," warned Vahed. The smaller, native crayfish, which have seen an 80-90 percent decline, are now at risk of extinction. In a small stream flowing through a park in Derby, central England, visitors can easily see the swarms of American crayfish. One of Vahed's students found the first specimen there 16 years ago and within five years the invasive species had completely replaced the native one. Simply taking the largest ones does not help contain the spread. "You're just helping the young American Signal crayfish to survive," explained Vahed. "So removing them and eating them isn't a solution." - 'Very human response' - The picture is more nuanced for Japanese knotweed, an invasive plant which can be eaten or used to brew beer. "It could potentially be a good idea," said knotweed specialist Karen Bacon, who found humor in the "very human response" of thinking "this plant is causing a problem, it is edible... let's eat it!". "But on the other hand, there are risks," added the professor, who is based at the University of Galway, western Ireland. Disturbing the plant can actually enhance its growth, she told AFP, adding that any project would need to be undertaken with experts "who understand the plant". "There is some potential in there, but it needs to be done carefully," she said. spe/jwp/bp/leg The post Invasive species on the menu at London restaurant appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
CLASSIC ROCK OPERA BALLET ‘RAMA, HARI’ RETURNS
Rama, Hari, the acclaimed Filipino rock opera ballet, returns to the stage this September, with performances at the Metropolitan Theater on 15 to 16 September and at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater on 22 to 23 September. The production holds the prestige of being the only collaboration that features the masterful works of five National Artists: Alice Reyes for direction and choreography, Ryan Cayabyab for music, Salvador Bernal for production Design, and Bienvenido Lumbera for lyrics and libretto with English translations by Rolando Tinio. Presented by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in partnership with the Metropolitan Theater and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, with the generous support of Birch Tree Adult Boost, the production features artists from CCP’s Professional Artist Support Program and Alice Reyes Dance Philippines. Inspired by the ancient Sanskrit epic Ramayana, the ballet tells of the adventures of Rama, prince and incarnation of the god Vishnu, who comes down to earth to save the world from Ravana, the most powerful of demons, and in time falls in love with Sita, daughter of the king of Mithila, Janaka, and eventually marries her. The evil Ravana attempts to tear the two apart, only to find himself defeated. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, a new musical genre was born, referred to as OPM, or Original Pilipino Music. Rama, Hari has the distinction of being the first OPM music and dance theater masterpiece. Rama, Hari was last restaged in 2012 and won 14 Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards. It was intended to be restaged once more in 2020 but was canceled due to the pandemic lockdown. The 2023 cast features Arman Ferrer in the lead role of Rama, with Vien King alternating. They will perform alongside dancers Ronelson Yadao and Ejay Arisola. Karylle Tatlonghari, Shiela Valderrama-Martinez and Nica Tupas alternate in the role of Rama’s beloved wife Sita, with dance counterparts, Monica Gana and Katrene San Miguel. Rak of Aegis Star Poppert Bernadas takes on the role of the demon King Ravana, alternating with Los Angeles-based musical theater actor Matthew San Jose (making his Manila debut) and Jonel Mojica. Dancing the role are Richardson Yadao and Tim Cabrera. Theater icon Audie Gemora takes on the role of King Dasaratha. Also joining the cast are Katrine Sunga and Maron Rozelle Mabana in the dual role of King Dasaratha’s Third Wife, Kaikeyi, and the Golden Doe, while Miah Canton and Raflesia Bravo take on the dual role of Kaikeyi’s evil adviser Kooni and Ravana’s demon sister Soorpanakha. Paw Castillo and Jon Abella do double duty as Monkey Army General Hanuman, and Rama’s brother Lakshmana. Certain performances of Rama, Hari will have live music performed by The Orchestra of the Filipino Youth.
