U.S. backs probe on Sikh’s slay
An American official has supported a call by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for India to cooperate in the investigation of a Sikh leader’s assassination in Vancouver in June. “We want to see accountability. And it’s important that the investigation run its course and lead to that result,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters in New York, where he was taking part in the United Nations General Assembly. “We would hope that our Indian friends would cooperate with that investigation as well,” Blinken said, referring to Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar, who was wanted in India for alleged terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder, was shot dead by two masked assailants. Blinken’s statement came four days after Trudeau linked Indian intelligence agents to the murder of the activist campaigning for the creation of a Sikh homeland called Khalistan. New Delhi insisted it had nothing to do with the killing, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “completely rejected” the accusation when earlier raised privately by Trudeau. Following Trudeau’s bombshell, Sikh leaders in Canada demanded justice for Nijjar’s killing. “We want a full investigation that brings to justice the people involved in this assassination, including those who pulled the trigger and the ones who plotted this assassination,” Harkirt Singh Dhadda, a lawyer and prominent member of the Sikh community in the Toronto area, said. Nijjar’s son also demanded the arrest of his father’s killers. “Hopefully, you can take this a step further and get specific individuals,” Balraj Singh Nijjar told reporters. Jaskaran Sandhu, co-founder of Baaz News, a website for the Sikh community, warned that “if the government doesn’t take a strong stance and send a strong message, all it declares to the world is that it’s open season on our citizens.” Jagmett Singh, the leader of the left-wing New Democratic Party and a Trudeau ally said Trudeau’s announcement confirms suspicions that India was interfering in the democratic rights of Canadians. Canada must also put an end to intelligence sharing with New Delhi, Sikh officials said. Since 2018, the two countries have established cooperation on counter-terrorism activities which commits them to financial, judicial and police cooperation — an agreement eyed warily by 770,000 Canadian Sikhs today. Taylor Swift, Shakira shine at MTV Video Music Awards
Taylor Swift cleaned up at Tuesday's MTV Video Music Awards and won the evening's top trophy, as Shakira accepted the night's prestigious Video Vanguard honor with a hip-shaking, career-spanning performance. Swift continued her global reign by scooping awards including Best Song, Best Pop and Best Direction, as well as the top competitive award for Video of the Year, which she won for her hit "Anti-Hero." Turn-of-the-millennium teen heartthrobs NSYNC reunited onstage for the first time in a decade to present her with the Best Pop award, leaving Swift, who is poised to post the first billion-dollar tour, fanning her cheeks. "This is unbelievable," Swift said as she accepted the night's top prize, which she also took home in 2022. "I just want to say that the fact that this is a fan-voted award means so much to me." But she didn't perform on the night known far more for its spectacle than its awards, instead sipping her drink as artists including Olivia Rodrigo, Anitta and Doja Cat took the stage. The made-for-broadcast show, held this year in Newark's Prudential Center, frequently panned to Swift who was seated near the main stage next to Ice Spice, the viral Bronx rapper who has collaborated with the pop phenom and who won the evening's prize for Best New Artist. A camera operator was reportedly tasked with filming Swift for the show's entire duration. The nearly four-hour show that included some 20 performances ended without handing out awards in a number of categories, however, including for Artist of the Year, which for the first time was an all-women slate including Swift, Shakira and Beyonce. Lil Wayne opened the show in a nod to this year's 50th anniversary of hip hop, and Sean Combs -- known by his stage names Puff Daddy, Puffy, P. Diddy and Diddy -- delivered a career-spanning performance as he accepted the night's Global Icon lifetime achievement award. "This is so surreal," said the 53-year-old from Harlem. "I started out as a paper boy." [caption id="attachment_183305" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Colombian singer Shakira performs onstage during the MTV Video Music Awards at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on 12 September 2023. (Photo by Timothy A. CLARY / AFP)[/caption] And it was Shakira who scored the night's most prestigious honor for lifetime achievement, the Video Vanguard award that celebrates music video innovations. The Colombian performer, 46, stole the show as she performed her signature hip swings and pops, singing a bilingual medley including "She Wolf," "Te Felicito," "Objection (Tango)," "Whenever, Wherever" and "Hips Don't Lie." Wearing a glittering, nude ensemble, the artist finished her set by crowd-surfing to a platform that then elevated her high above a screaming crowd of fans and peers. "Thank you MTV. Thank you for being such a big part of my career since I was only 18 years old," she said. Afrobeats and Bongos Rapper Nicki Minaj hosted the event for the second consecutive year, also debuting live her newest single, "Last Time I Saw You," which is slated for release on her album "Pink Friday 2" in November. She won the night's award for Best Hip Hop, for "Super Freaky Girl." Fresh and Slick Rick, LL Cool J, DMC of Run-DMC, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Earlier Doja Cat ignited the crowd as she performed a medley of "Attention," "Paint The Town Red" and "Demons," donning a sexy skirtsuit situation she slowly loosened as she danced, meanwhile unfurling a long blonde mane. Best R&B went to SZA, who did not attend, while South Korea's Stray Kids won the award for Best K-pop and later performed. Nigeria's Rema won the prize for Best Afrobeats, a new category, for his remixed single "Calm Down" featuring Selena Gomez. The song surpassed a billion streams on Spotify over the weekend. "This means so much seeing Afrobeats grow this big," Rema said while accepting the trophy. Brazil's Anitta dropped a booty-shaking dance party of a show with hits including "Funk Rave," which earned the evening's prize for Best Latin. Colombian Karol G was also among the evening's top performers, and she scored a prize with Shakira for Best Collaboration. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion debuted their live performance of "Bongos," their latest collaboration that follows the resounding success of "WAP." Cardi entered the stage from the ceiling on a disco ball, her hair in loose waves a la Donna Summer. Megan joined her from another stage, and after their respective verses the pair led the audience through a high-energy, twerkified dance breakdown. Pop-punk band Fallout Boy rounded out the millennial nostalgia tour that began the night with NSYNC. The emo rockers performed their updated version of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire," hitting major moments of the past three decades in a revamp that includes the line: "YouTube killed MTV." Teenage tycoon
At the age of 19, Paul inherited the vast empire of his father, Felix. When Felix contracted cancer of the liver, at stage 4, he told the 30-member board of Galactica Enterprises that he was bequeathing the helm of the company to his teenage son. There were violent objections. For how could an inexperienced teenage boy, even if from the prestigious Weston School of Economics in London, run a vast, complex holding company with seven subsidiaries? But Felix got his way. At the first board meeting, Paul smiled, cool as a cucumber, in front of a hostile board. PAUL: (With unflinching authority) Meeting come to order, please. (The whispers die down to a deathly silence). RICHARD: (EVP who coveted Paul’s position). Aren’t you too young to pilot this large tanker? PAUL: Watch me, Richard. RICHARD: (With polite irreverence) Your Weston credentials won’t help you. PAUL: Sure, my wisdom is still theoretical not experiential, but not for long. You just have to live with that for now, Richard. ABE: (an old guard, VP for Finance, best friend of Felix) I strongly agree with Richard. CORA: (VP for Operations, middle-aged but still attractive) So what do you preach, Paul? PAUL: Hello, Cora. I’m glad you are one of the five female board members. This male-dominated board needs women for balance. Women are refreshing in a macho world. Women are often better in crisis management than men. I am forming a core group and you will be the crisis management expert. This company will take the paradigm shift advocated by Steve Jobs, namely, “love marketing.” Steve, who had no college degree, was booted out of Apple, which he founded, by his Harvard-trained board for his ridiculous “love marketing.” After 20 years, the board pleaded with him to rescue the firm. He launched the bombshell iPod that once again rocketed the firm to the high heavens, based on “love marketing.” What’s first on our agenda, Nicole? NICOLE: (VP for Corporate Affairs, the youngest board member, extremely attractive and an aggressive go-getter) Sir, first on the agenda is the merger of Galactica with Eastwood which your dad violently opposed. But now that he is gone, the pro-mergers are back. Charlie, can you expound on this, please? CHARLIE: (an old guard on the board) In a few words, there is strength in unity. The merger means growth for Galactica. We need Eastwood’s expertise to widen our product base. PAUL: What do you say, Abe? ABE: The issue for your dad was not growth or profit but corporate sustainability. He had the right, as founder, to keep Galactica pure. However, Galactica without a merger will go stagnant soon in my view. RICHARD: The merger will make us the largest conglomerate on the East Coast. PAUL: Size is not the issue. Let’s not over-debate. Let’s have a vote. The vote, the second, was the same as the first, an overwhelming no to the merger. Paul had known this all along. PAUL: Thank you for respecting my dad’s wishes. Next on the agenda, please, Nicole. NICOLE: Sir, the core group. PAUL: Oh yes, I am forming a seven-member core group called Hydra, the seven-headed monster. It will be my alter ego. It will be the venue for me to rapidly shift from theoretical to experiential wisdom. Hydra will have the power to decide and report to the board. The members I have selected are, one, Cora, crisis management expert; two, Nicole, secretariat and research; pro-merger advocates Richard, Abe and Charlie. Two more to go. RICHARD: You chose your enemies for your inner circle? PAUL: I see no enemies, only friends who are brave enough to speak out, which I admire. I am hosting a poker party this Sunday at my house. The entire board is obliged to attend. Nicole, I want red meat, red lobsters, and red wine. NICOLE: And red napkins. PAUL: Great. The best poker players in this group, according to my dad, are Richard, Abe, myself, and of all people, Francesca. The diminutive Francesca, VP for Public Affairs, rises and bows. CORA: Why poker, sir? PAUL: A good manager is measured by his poker skills — his ability to size up a situation, to balance risk versus safety, his knowledge of probabilities, his ability to assess opponents and bluff, all in a matter of seconds. To the best three, I will award $30,000, $20,000, and $10,000. (There is an uproar.) There will be a poker party every quarter. Unless there is an objection, this meeting is adjourned. The board members gather around Paul, congratulating him. His enemies, the pro-merger old guards, become instant friends. He exudes total charisma. He uses the quarterly poker parties to achieve corporate harmony. Galactica made millions with the measly investment of regular poker parties. Paul gained fame and was featured in The Wall Street Journal as the “Teenage Tycoon of the Century.” *** eastwindreplyctr@gmail.com The post Teenage tycoon appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Trump unbowed, woos supporters after latest charges
Donald Trump sought to spin his latest indictments into a 2024 campaign pitch Wednesday, with the former president arguing government "corruption" and the legal attacks against him have plunged America into decline. The twice-impeached Republican has remained defiant despite an accumulation of legal woes that could see him tried in court and sent to prison before the presidential vote late next year. The latest, a bombshell 45-page indictment unsealed Tuesday, is the most serious set of charges he faces in accusing Trump of trying to overturn the 2020 election results. It was the third time officials have handed down criminal charges against Trump, who continues to argue that the election was rigged. In a post on his Truth Social platform, the 77-year-old Trump suggested the indictment was all the more reason for his supporters to circle the wagons and elect him next year. "I have never had so much support on anything before," Trump said in a five-sentence post written in all caps. "This unprecedented indictment of a former (highly successful!) president, & the leading candidate, by far, in both the Republican Party and the 2024 general election, has awoken the world to the corruption, scandal & failure that has taken place in the United States for the past three years," he added. "America is a nation in decline, but we will make it great again, greater than ever before." The comments are the latest by the pugnacious ex-president insisting the charges against him are "fake," and that President Joe Biden is actively seeking to derail the campaign of his political rival. Trump already faces criminal prosecution over his handling of classified documents at his Florida estate after he left the White House, and over hush-money payments made to a pornographic actress in the run-up to the 2016 election. Georgia prosecutors are also looking into whether Trump illegally attempted to overturn the 2020 election outcome in the southern state. Despite his legal peril, Trump retains the loyalty of a large segment of his party. He holds a substantial lead in polls for the Republican nomination and is seen as widening the gap with his nearest rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Biden has declined to comment on the case, and his officials stress that the Justice Department is independent from the White House. As Trump faces indictment heat, Biden chills beachside
"It was compelling," Joe Biden offered Tuesday after Donald Trump's indictment. But the US president was referring to a film -- not the legal fate of his political rival, which he has declined to address. The 80-year-old Democrat was emerging from a screening of "Oppenheimer," having dined earlier with First Lady Jill Biden at a fish restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, the seaside escape where the couple is vacationing this week. While Christopher Nolan's biopic tells the life of the American physicist who developed the first atomic weapon, Tuesday's historic indictment of ex-president Trump is the bombshell currently rocking American politics. The rebellious Republican is likely to face Biden once more in 2024, even as he is criminally charged over allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election result. It is the third indictment of Trump since March. They include charges over a hush-money payment to an adult film star in 2016, and his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House. A fourth indictment could follow in Georgia, where an investigation over electoral interference is concluding. No comment Biden, known for impulsive remarks, has demonstrated considerable discipline when it comes to his rival's legal peril. After Trump became the first-ever indicted former president in March, Biden repeatedly gave reporters a curt "no comment" and other dodges. On Wednesday, as the commander-in-chief biked along a Rehoboth trail to occasional cheers from onlookers, a reporter's shouted one-word question -- "Indictments?" -- was met with silence. Biden has little choice, especially given that the two gravest cases against Trump are federal prosecutions by the US Department of Justice, which Biden's aides have repeatedly stressed operates independently from the White House. Even the slightest word from Biden would fuel charges from Trump's supporters that the president is weaponizing the judiciary. Biden therefore is counting on the modern-day visual known as the split screen. Relaxation and remove On one side is Trump, with his legal proceedings piling up and the bracing images of the former leader scowling as he sat in a Manhattan court this year. It is not yet known whether Trump will appear in person for a preliminary hearing set for Thursday in Washington in the case surrounding the 2020 election. On the other side: Biden chilling in Rehoboth, where he might hit the beach Thursday like last weekend, or take another bike ride. Either way, it's the very image of peace of mind. If Trump is "compelling," in one form or another, Biden -- as he has described himself before -- is assumed to be "boring." In running for re-election, the current president is betting that Americans will favor calm, predictability and prosperity over potential chaos. He soon heads west to tout "Bidenomics," his economic strategy that Republicans mocked but which he pitches as responsible for America's robust growth. Is the US president, whose popularity ratings are far from effervescent, writing the script for an electoral blockbuster in 2024? That remains uncertain, but Biden wants to believe that boredom -- a mortal sin in moviemaking -- is a virtue at the ballot box. ‘He’s just Ken’: Will Ryan Gosling snag an Oscar nom for ‘Barbie’?
She’s everything. He’s just Ken.” In Barbie’s world, Ken is designed as an accessory, a sidekick. He is the textbook definition of a muscular and masculine man with blonde hair and compelling blue eyes, but his role is just to be Barbie’s companion. However, Ryan Gosling’s stellar performance in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has transformed Ken. He’s no longer just a disposable sidekick or accessory, but a funny and charming personality in his own right capable of stealing the show. With Barbie getting generally positive reviews from critics and smashing box office records this year, moviegoers can’t help but anticipate what’s in store for the entire crew: Who will bring home awards? Director Greta Gerwig seems a shoo-in at this point for her screenplay and possibly direction. Another buzzy question: Will Ryan Gosling get nominated for his turn as Ken? Several film critics have singled out Gosling’s performance. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, for instance, described his turn as “plastic fantastic” in a “ragged doll comedy” where his character has “all the best lines” and “is allowed to steal the whole film.” Beth Webb of Empire, meanwhile, raved: “Gosling submerges wholeheartedly into Ken’s insecure psyche as he moves from Barbie’s sidepiece to patriarchal poster boy. Every muscle flex, every hair flick, every guitar strum lands perfectly. There are moments where he will rob you of breath.” With Barbie’s commercial and international success, will Gosling secure his third Academy nomination and finally win his first Oscar? In Oscar history, it is uncommon for a comedy to win Best Picture, especially when pitted against “serious” movies. Barbie is classified as a fantasy-comedy movie, so the chances of it getting a Best Picture nomination, let alone winning, is slim — but who knows? Comedies like It Happened One Night (1934) and Annie Hall (1977) had once gone on to win Best Picture. Gosling has a chance at securing a third Oscar nod (and perhaps winning the trophy) because the Academy seems to look more favorably on comic performances. Respected American Actor Kevin Kline secured an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the heist comedy film A Fish Called Wanda (1988). The late actor George Burns became the oldest recipient of the Best Supporting Actor award for The Sunshine Boys (1976), until Christopher Plummer won in 2011 for his role in the romantic comedy-drama film Beginners. While he has yet to win an Oscar, Gosling is a two-time nominee. He first landed an Oscar Best Actor nomination in 2007 as a drug-addict history teacher in Half Nelson and bagged another Best Actor nod in 2017 as a jazz pianist in La La Land. Barbie is currently showing in cinemas nationwide. The post ‘He’s just Ken’: Will Ryan Gosling snag an Oscar nom for ‘Barbie’? appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Barbie’ Review: Preachy Hot Mess
To fans of Greta Gerwig and long-time collaborator and partner Noah Baumbach such as myself, it is already understood that Barbie won’t be your typical family comedy about the fun adventures of Mattel’s most popular doll. That underneath the cute trailer lies a subversive movie packed with Gerwig’s brand of sardonic wit, feminist sensibilities and relatable human vulnerability, which made her solo projects such as Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019) such masterpieces. Even her collab projects with Baumbach in their days of mumblecore films, their unforgettable Francis Ha (2012) and Mistress America (2015), make Barbie a highly anticipated film for basically everybody. But the reality is that Barbie is a hot mess. Preachy and melodramatic, it seems to struggle under the weight of mixing arthouse and commercial appeal. It feels self-conscious of the fact that it features a toy, but that it should be “deeper” than just a toy movie. Gerwig seems desperate to conceal whether or not she has become a sellout. Margot Robbie plays Stereotypical Barbie, who is the most basic of all Barbies. Blonde and perfect-looking down to her tiptoed feet, she lives in Barbieland with a variety of other Barbies — all based on real Barbie dolls. But her eternal plastic life of sleepovers, dance parties and pretend drinking is suddenly disrupted by intrusive thoughts of dying. What does this all mean, she wonders? When she wakes up flat-footed, her toast burnt and she can no longer glide in the air as if held by an invisible little girl, she realizes that something is indeed seriously wrong. Taking the advice of Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon) — which is pretty much how all my Barbies ended up as a child — Barbie journeys to the Real World to fix things, with Ken (Ryan Gosling) tagging along. [caption id="attachment_161377" align="aligncenter" width="535"] Ryan Gosling as Ken.[/caption] In the harsh world where we live, Ken, formerly just a Barbie accessory, gets excited by patriarchy, while Barbie — well, for her, it’s more like complex trauma. While the movie looks gorgeous, with mildly interesting inspirations from popular films and musicals plus semi-funny gags here and there, it is heavily burdened by its shallow philosophical ruminations, like those inspirational and motivational therapy art cards and cheesy content on social media targeted at the insecure, the depressed, the left-behind and the oppressed female. Instead of experiencing Gerwig and Baumbach’s brand of self-deprecating humor in portraying an imperfect life in an imperfect world, Barbie feels like a “woke” wannabe psychotherapist that tries so hard to please you with its corny humor, while irritating you with unsolicited advice. 1.5 out of 5 stars The post ‘Barbie’ Review: Preachy Hot Mess appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Trump indicted in classified documents probe
Donald Trump said Thursday he has been indicted over his handling of classified documents after leaving office, the US ex-president's most serious legal threat yet as he pursues a second White House term. "The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform as he broke the bombshell news of a historic moment for the United States: the first time a sitting or former commander-in-chief has faced federal charges. There was no immediate confirmation from the Justice Department. Trump attorney Jim Trusty told CNN that his client has been indicted on seven charges including the willful retention of documents in violation of the Espionage Act, making false statements, obstruction of justice and a count of conspiracy. Though the precise details of the charges were not immediately clear, people familiar with the matter told The New York Times the conspiracy charge was related to obstruction of justice. In his post, Trump, who is running for president again, said he has been summoned to a federal courthouse in Miami next Tuesday -- the day before his 77th birthday. His announcement came a day after US media said federal prosecutors had informed his lawyers that he is the target of the probe into his handling of classified documents. Trump was already the first former or sitting president to be charged with a crime -- in his case over election-eve hush money payments to a porn star who said she had an affair with him. That indictment was handed down by Manhattan's district attorney in March. In a statement after his initial online posts, the Trump campaign lashed out at what it called an "unprecedented abuse of power," and called for the indictment to be thrown out. 'Dark day' In a defiant video released after he shared the news, Trump repeatedly declared his innocence and framed the indictment as a form of election interference by a Justice Department "weaponized" by the Biden administration. "They come after me because now we're leading in the polls again by a lot against Biden," Trump said in the clip. "Our country is going to hell and they come after Donald Trump... We can't let this continue." Fellow Republicans swiftly stood by him, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, who has had a rollercoaster relationship with Trump. "Today is indeed a dark day for the United States of America. It is unconscionable for a President to indict the leading candidate opposing him," McCarthy said in a statement. "I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump." Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a rival for the GOP presidential nomination, echoed Trump's claims of a "weaponized" DOJ, adding on Twitter that he would "excise political bias" if elected president. The Twitter account of Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee posted a repeated Trump slogan: "WITCH HUNT." Special counsel Jack Smith, named by US Attorney General Merrick Garland, has been looking into a cache of classified documents that Trump had stored at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida after leaving the White House. The FBI carted away some 11,000 papers after serving a search warrant on Mar-a-Lago in August, and obstruction-of-justice charges could be a result of his resisting efforts to recover the trove. Trump eventually turned over 15 boxes containing almost 200 classified documents to the National Archives in January 2022 but was subpoenaed for any outstanding records in his possession. When asked about the charges Thursday night, Smith's spokesman Peter Carr told AFP: "We are declining to comment." The White House said it learned of the indictment from media coverage and a spokesperson declined to comment on the news, noting that the DOJ "conducts its criminal investigations independently," CNN reported. Mounting legal woes Some Democratic lawmakers spoke out following Thursday's revelation. Trump's indictment "is another affirmation of the rule of law," House Democrat Adam Schiff said. "For four years, he acted like he was above the law," he added. "But he should be treated like any other lawbreaker. And today, he has been." Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing in the documents case, telling a Fox News town hall event on June 1 that "everything I did was right." But he has openly acknowledged taking and storing the documents, undermining his lawyers' suggestion that he took the stash inadvertently in the confusion of a chaotic departure. "This evidence just adds to the mound of stuff that already exists, and no one piece is the 'be all and end all,' but when you put them all together, the case is so strong," former Watergate prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks told MSNBC. "You cannot imagine his getting away with this." The latest indictment comes with Trump facing numerous other probes as he bids to be the Republican nominee to challenge Joe Biden for the presidency in 2024. Smith is also looking at whether Trump should face charges over the 2021 US Capitol riot, and Georgia prosecutors are investigating whether Trump illegally attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election outcome there. Trump has already been charged with dozens of financial crimes as part of the alleged hush money scheme to silence the porn star, and is due to go on trial next March, in the middle of primary election season.
