Bataan’s first mall brings job opportunities to locals
SM City Bataan reflects the values of the local community with over 96 percent of the mall’s administration staff being Bataeños, including two in leadership roles. With a workforce of over a thousand across mall tenants — and still increasing — the mall proudly showcases the skills and expertise of the community. Congressman Albert S. Garcia, Bataan’s 2nd District representative, joined thousands of Bataeños on the opening of SM City Bataan, the first SM mall in the province and the 83rd nationwide, expressing his support and heralding the positive economic implications of the mall’s establishment to the province as a whole. Cong. Garcia said: “When we had the ocular for the different stores during the blessing, we found out that almost everyone working there is from Bataan. They are residents of either Balanga, Pilar, Orani, Orion or Hermosa. I’m happy to know that these jobs are filled by Bataeños. That is really what we were aiming for to begin with — to present more job opportunities that will help make the lives of every Bataeño better.” Roberto Santos, the owner of Chedeng’s Snack Bar, expressed his joy at the presence of many local brands that are now in SM City Bataan. “It’s a big thing that homegrown local brands are now in SM,” he said. “In addition to helping fellow Bataeños, many will be motivated as well to go out and do business with SM to promote the local food industries of the province.” Garcia also lauded SM City Bataan’s effort to extend support to the province’s local development by featuring homegrown businesses (including family-owned brands and locally managed franchises) in different prominent spaces within the mall which makes it a hub that truly connects communities across the province. Accessibility does not end with the mall’s physical structure alone. The 24th mall in North Luzon developed by SM Prime Holdings Inc., the property arm of SM Investments Corporation, SM City Bataan is strategically located in the capital. Through the terminal hubs surrounding SM City Bataan, the mall provides a venue for visitors to conveniently explore what the province has to offer — whether it’s the stone-throw Spanish-inspired Plaza Mayor in the capital or the hidden gem that is Dunsulan Falls behind Mt. Samat, tourists and Bataeños alike can explore to their heart’s content. Mural As visitors step into SM City Bataan, they are greeted by a mural with clay pots or banga that capture an aspect of the cultural identity of its residents celebrating the namesake of its capital Balanga. Entrance two on the other end renews the province’s commitment to preserving its environment as gel lights-formed birds representing the Ibong Dayo festival were integrated into another mural as a nod to the efforts of the city’s Wetland and Nature Park, an outdoor sanctuary in the protection of migratory birds. New head of Diocese of Antipolo is Balanga bishop
Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos has been appointed by the Vatican as the new leader of the Diocese of Antipolo, home of the International Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, succeeding Bishop Francisco de Leon who filed his resignation after serving for nearly seven years. “The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Antipolo, Philippines, presented by Bishop Francisco M. De Leon. The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Ruperto C. Santos of Balanga, Philippines, as bishop of Antipolo, Philippines,” the announcement of the Holy See Press Office said on Wednesday night. De Leon’s resignation was due to his age reaching 75 on 11 June which, according to the Church’s canon law, should be the time for bishops to file their resignations before the Pope. Santos, a San Rafael, Bulacan native, served as a priest in the Archdiocese of Manila in 1983, subsequently becoming a professor at San Carlos Seminary, and eventually at the Pontefico Collegio Filipino in Rome. Prior to his appointment, he served as the bishop of Balanga, Bataan since 2010. He also held a position as the vice-chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission for Pastoral Care of Migrants and as bishop-promoter of Stella Maris-Philippines. No one is ignored. No one is forgotten nor left behind. But all are helped. All are given hope. And they can feel and act as their brother’s keeper (Genesis 4,9). With Fratelli Tutti, we are one and united. We belong to each other and we need one another. With the grateful heart and open hand, let us listen to the valuable reflective sharing of our Virgen Milagrosa del Rosario College Seminary priest-formators,” he said......»»
Bishops caution vs. revival of Bataan nuclear power plant
Diocese of Balanga Bishop Ruperto C. Santos has expressed concern over the planned revival of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant as part of the government’s intention to use nuclear energy as an additional source of power supply. Bishop Ruperto Santos (CBCP / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) “We welcome and accept that there is a need for a study, but we want the government to be transparent and for its assessment to be open to the public. The plan must also be for the common good and must benefit public interest,” Santos said over Church-run Radio Veritas. “Let us remember that Russia conducted a study on the BNPP and found the power plant to be absolutely outdated. The use of nuclear energy will be dangerous for Bataan and for the country as a whole,” he added. The Church leader called on authorities to focus its attention and the country’s resources, instead, on the worsening coronavirus disease situation in the country. “The number of cases of coronavirus in the country has gone really high, but we do not have the capability to address it. We lack hospitals, medicines, and support for our health care workers. The government must pour its resources on the health crisis, which should be given priority,” Santos stressed. San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, vice chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – Commission on Social Action Justice and Peace (CBCP-NASSA), earlier, expressed alarm over the Department of Energy’s intention to use nuclear energy as an alternative source of power. A study by the Department of Energy (DoE), the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR), and the Korean Electric Power Company (KEPCO) said, the country will need to spend more than $1 billion in a span of four years to revive the 631-megawatt BNPP which was built in 1984......»»
