Bong Go reminds Filipinos to exercise right to vote in upcoming barangay elections
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, in an interview on Tuesday, 24 October, during his inspection of projects he supported in Kapalong, Davao del Norte, urged the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections on 30 October. Moreover, Go encouraged Filipinos to exercise their right to vote and to be discerning in choosing candidates they believe can contribute to the development of their respective communities. "Sa mga kababayan natin, exercise your right to vote. Pumunta po kayo sa mga presinto, go out and vote for candidates na tingin ninyo ay makakatulong sa pag-unlad ng inyong barangay," said Go. The senator also suggested a set of criteria for voters when selecting candidates. Entrepreneurship eyed in SHS curriculum
The possibility of including entrepreneurship as a subject in the current senior high school curriculum is underway, said Go Negosyo chairperson Joey Concepcion following a meeting with Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte. Concepcion discussed with the Vice President several avenues in which entrepreneurship skills can be included in the school curriculum, among them through direct mentoring by veteran entrepreneurs, and another is through the help of private companies, specifically those engaged in the agriculture sector. “Our idea is if we open up this avenue to young people, there would be a way for them to find an alternative path to success,” Concepcion said. Under the current curriculum, Filipino children in public schools attend a minimum of 13 years under the K-12 program. An average of four more years would be added if the student decides to pursue higher education,” the Go Negosyo chairman said in a statement on Thursday. He added that not all families have the resources to support children through the completion of the entire curriculum, noting that “We could help these young people find their path, focus on it, and maybe one day the students can turn it into a business.” He said that there are many successful entrepreneurs who succeed even without the benefit of higher education. Concepcion noted that among the possible paths that were discussed in which entrepreneurship can be incorporated into the curriculum is through proven mentoring programs that are already being implemented by Go Negosyo. One of these is through roadshows in which a successful entrepreneur is sent to mentor the students at their respective schools; another way is for students to observe actual mentoring with active and aspiring entrepreneurs. Moreover, he said Go Negosyo has employed different methods of reaching out to potential entrepreneurs. It has conducted plenary events targeted toward women, the youth, OFWs, as well as thematic events that focus on introducing MSMEs to digital platforms and to opportunities offered by the tourism sector. Ninong Ry on giving A twist to popular dishes: Preference over authenticity
At the recent launch of Ninong Ry (real name: Ryan Reyes) as the first-ever celebrity endorser of the food seasoning brand Knorr Professional, the chef and YouTuber showcased his culinary skills and sense of humor that have endeared him to his over two million online followers. He gave an interactive cooking demo on how he puts his own twist to the universal favorite food, fried chicken, and the Pinoy specialty dish, sisig, using the brand’s liquid seasoning and chicken powder. While doing his tasks, he also dispensed some tips and answered a few questions from media representatives and other guests from the foodservice sector. For the fried chicken, Ninong Ry used the brining process of soaking proteins in a solution of salty water and spices overnight to infuse flavor and tenderize the meat. He then deep fried the already prepared chicken parts to golden brown perfection. To the question about using an air fryer instead, he replied, “Puwede naman, although kailangan mo s’yang i-turn. Kailangan mo s’yang i-thermometer talaga (It’s possible, but you need to turn the meat over. You need to use a thermometer.) Meaning, you have to be mindful of uneven cooking. “Ultimately in the end, mas matrabaho pa s’ya at mas magastos pa s’ya sa deep fryer (It takes more effort and money).” In making his own version of sisig, Ninong Ry incorporated his current fascination on curing and smoking meat to come up with a type of bacon. He confessed being inspired by the Three-Way Sisig of JP Anglo, the chef and owner of Sarsa restaurant. “Technically Knorr seasoning is a flavorful liquid na meron kang asin (there’s already salt),” he pointed out. “Dadagdagan ko na lang ng curing salt. Dadagdagan ko lang ng asukal para sweet cured. Kasi ’yun naman ang gusto natin sa bacon (I’ll just add curing salt. I’ll just add sugar to make it sweet. That’s what we like in bacon.).” He then showed the cured meat, which he had already smoked for four hours, and cut into sisig-sized pieces. “Ang tingin ko sa sisig (I look at sisig as), salad,” he quipped. construction n’ya ay parang salad. Ang ingredients and’yan na, just mix them all together. (Because the construction is like in salad. The ingredients are all there.) It’s the salad that I want. “Kung salad s’ya, dapat ang tingin natin, madali lang gawin. Hindi s’ya magtrabaho, pang-restaurant lang. Kung kaya n’yong gumawa ng salad sa bahay, kaya n’yo gumawa ng sisig (If it’s salad, we have to see it something easy to do. It’s not labor-intensive, just for restaurants to do. If you can make a salad at home, you can make sisig).” [caption id="attachment_192641" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Pork sisig.[/caption] He then added the other ingredients, such as red and white onion, green chilies, liver spread (or mashed chicken liver, if it’s your preference), crispy garlic and a dash of black pepper. “Kung gusto n’yong maglagay ng mayonnaise, labas ako d’yan, (If you want to put mayonnaise, I’m out of it,” he said, laughing. “Maglalagay ako ng konting sugar.” (I’ll put a bit of sugar.) “This is very far from the original. But I like it,” he explained. “Pero hindi na pinagpipilitan natin. (What we’ll not force it) For me, preference over authenticity.” Here’s another piece of advice for aspiring chefs: “Huwag tayong balat-sibuyas. (Don’t be onion-skinned) Minsan, pag di nagustuhan ang luto natin (Sometimes when our dish is not liked), we take offense. Kasi parang ang sakit-sakit no’n. (Because sit seems hurtful.) But it’s nothing personal. Talagang kailangan mo lang tigasan ang mukha mo minsan (Sometimes you just have to be thick-skinned).” He then shared a realization that has helped him deal with online bashing: “Nagtrabaho kasi ako sa isang (I worked in a) restaurant before moving to social media. So nakita ko ang parallel do’n, e. (I saw the parallelism). Pag may kumain sa restaurant n’yo at hindi nagustuhan ang pagkain, susuntukin mo ba? (If a diner didn’t like the food, will you punch him?) Hindi naman, e. (Not really.) Tatanggapin mo ang sinabi n’ya (You’ll accept what they said), but at the same time, tatanggapin mo pa rin ang pera n’ya (You’ll still accept their payment.) Nagbigay lang s’ya ng hindi magandang (They only gave a not-so nice) comment. Negosyo ’to, e. (It’s a business.) “Ngayon, nasa (Now, I’m in) social media ako. Technically speaking, hindi ako nagse-serve ng pagkain, pero ang produkto ko, videos. (I don’t serve food, but my product is in video form.) ’Yung mga viewers ko, hindi sila nagbayad (My viewers don’t pay), but gamit ang pinakamahal na (but they use the most precious) commodity, which is your time. ‘Teacher item for sale’ allegations to be probed
General Santos City — The Ministry of Basic Higher and Technical Education of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has created a special investigation committee to look into the alleged extortion and selling of position for teachers that amounted to at least P300,000. In a statement, MBHTE Minister Mohagher Iqbal stressed that the allegations are tainting the reputation of the Ministry. This comes after Kapatagan town, Lanao del Sur Mayor Raida Maglangit through her Facebook account divulged that a P300,000 fee is allegedly collected just to get a teacher position. She even said that despite of the qualifications and even with masters’ degree, some candidates are being dropped because they could not afford the fee. “I have created a special committee to ferret out the truth…We are not saying that this is happening in the Ministry, we are not also saying that it is happening outside the Ministry, but we will assure you that we shall give teeth to the committee to investigate and find the truth in and outside the Ministry of Basic Higher and Technical Education. We will leave no stones unturned, we will find the truth,” Iqbal said. The minister also lamented that being a cum laude is not only the basis of being hired and there are processes needed to be followed, adding that a candidate must possess the basic requirements such as relevant course graduated, the relevant Civil Service qualifications, trainings, oral and written results, among others. That’s how we connect,” Panjee said, looking back on why they thought of setting up a cocktail bar business in the vibrant and buoyant streets of Poblacion. “We just wanted a place where we can sit down, talk to a bartender, have pretty good drinks and just hang out with each other.” Panjee decided to leave her corporate job to go full time into the business, while Mike still keeps his day job as a financial analyst. While they are relatively new to the business, it is not their first time to open a bar. In 2020, the couple ventured into the business, not knowing that the pandemic would go full-blown months later. However, it did not stop the Singletons from taking such risks: “We’ll try a second round. If it doesn’t work, then [we] will never get back to it,” Mike said, adding that they constantly reassured themselves whenever they felt bouts of hesitancy at the thought of trying again. Indeed, the second time’s the charm. As soon as the couple opened Banter & Jive, the dream was realized. In retrospect, the couple agreed that the bar industry in Poblacion has been laidback despite the rise of established bars around the area.“The bar community is very strong. We’re very collaborative with each other, especially the cocktails. We don’t really treat each other as competition… It’s more of uplift[ing] the community together,” Mike said. “We all have a shared goal of increasing cocktail awareness,” he added. There is also a noticeably growing cocktail appreciation in the area. While there is nothing wrong with the classic shot of hard liquor — the oddly satisfying sensation of the burning aftertaste it delivers — new and old customers alike are becoming more adventurous and experimental with their drinks. “We keep on revamping our menu in such a way that people would really accept or like,” Panjee said, adding how they would cater to what their customers like in their menu, giving them a more profound and appreciative drinking experience. Undeniably, the country’s nightlife has always been one for the books — where a spontaneous trip to a bar with the people you cherish ends up being one of the most unforgettable moments in your life. Adding Filipinos’ innate hospitality and natural charm, the Poblacion nightlife perfectly captures the vision of being yourself while connecting with others. “As much work as we have to put into drinks, we also put in a lot of effort in making people feel welcome, especially in an intimate bar like ours. You could remember a really great drink but you will never forget the places where you really felt welcome, [where it] felt like a second home,” Panjee said. Taking a leap of faith Despite the lack of experience in operating a bar, it did not stop the couple from turning their passions into something bigger than themselves. With Banter & Jive opening early this year, the couple is onto something great as they are soft-opening a new bar next month in Poblacion. “Take the leap… It’s very scary. It’s still scary now, but take that risk. I think it’s also important for you to have a good support system when you do that — take the leap,” Panjee said, continuing that being surrounded by like-minded people who support you definitely takes the fear and hesitancy away. For aspiring entrepreneurs who want to operate their bar business, the couple agreed that now is the best time to materialize your dreams. “Not having experience isn’t a good enough reason for you not to do something. The only way to have experience is to actually experience it. There is no better time than now,” Panjee said.
